Default Does anyone use a video camera as their webcam?

I tried to search for this, but all the threads I found were from like 4 or 5 years ago, so I was hoping for some more updated information. I have the Logitech C930e webcam. It looks fine to me on the SM Broadcaster, but when my roommate looks at my room on her computer, she thinks the quality doesn't look good and that it looks choppy. My frame rate is always around 15. I was thinking about upgrading to a video camera, but I have no idea which one would be good. I'm also worried that it might be a little too high quality. I don't really want them to be able to see every little blemish on my skin and I think the Logitech actually makes me look pretty good. I was wondering if anyone uses a video camera and do you think it is better than a webcam? Thanks!

On SM own recommendation you should use the 920. I was using the 930 but I kept having issues with my broadcaster and streaming so in the name of eliminating every possibility I switched to the 920. Everything went back to normal but it could be a coincidence.

Yeah, I saw their recommendation after I already bought the 930. I've been thinking about giving it a try too since it seems like a lot of girls use it and love it. Thanks!

some of the higher tier cam girls do that as they are a bit pricey instead of shelling out a few 100$ for an expensive DSLR camcorder try tinkering with the settings on the encoder dont do anything else on the internet while ur on cam . Also how much ram do you have on ur computer? . 15FPS isnt that great you want to aim for 30 for more i would suggest looking at ur computer specs first - there is so much more to making a good feed then just what camera ur using .

I use to use a video camera for many years and my quality wasn't as great becuase webcams these are better then turning a video camera into a webcam.

my webcam is a c615 works way better then my sony handycam.

your connection with appear different to different in the same house because your draining resources from the internet connection. the internet connection your broadcast shows once quality of your show and viewers internet connection brings in another. At most you can control your connection you use to broadcast but for who is viewing you can't control that.

Like snowy0star says. Turn auto settings off your camera. Make sure rightlight is off. Autofocus off. Set up your picture manually. change the cams settings to 720p rather than 1080p

What is your cpu useage %? The stream works by decoding and then recode to upload to the server it doesnt use the actual stream direct from the camera. It makes your pc work for it hence why use 720p rather than 1080p.

If your cpu is over 70% then take a look at what is using the resources. the whole just cause its a i7 thing means nothing. Either way or no matter what cam you use you cant get around the decode then encode thing. So a strong pc is the most important.

I don't do anything on the internet while I'm on. I have 8 GB.

I did turn all the auto stuff off. It was freezing up every time I moved and I could see it on my end before I turned that off, so that part is okay. I should have gotten an i7 probably, but I only got an i5. Do you think that is part of the problem?

probably but it depends on ur encoder settings and i believe ur vid card too. if u have a good vid card it will take the load off ur processor from having to encode ur feed . the less load u can get off ur processor the better ur feed will be . are u using the adobe encoder or SMs thingy ?

Depends on the i5. Which i5 is it?

They make many different grades of cpu.

I5 can be a duo core or a quad core. I dont think they made hex or octa cores in that range.

If you right click on this pc and select propertys it should say on the white screen that pops up.

    I5 6998k. For example

I use the SM Broadcaster. The video card is an Intel HD Graphics 520. I'm so mad I skimped on the computer though. I should have just paid the few extra hundred bucks and gotten the i7.

Mine is an i5 also, 3320M 2.60ghz 64 bit 4 gig of ram, Intel core.

    Is that ok?

I'd like to get that c615, I have the 920, 930, 9000 & an older logitech, none take pictures. They all broadcast.

No you do not need a superpowerful grapgics card to cam. And on a laptop you cant really just add a better graphics card like you can on a desktop. A cheap rubbish 5450 1gb you get on eBay for $5 will work fine. Will display 1080p on twin monitors no issues at all. Camming is all cpu powered. So ram and cpu are king.

If graphics cards mattered then we wouldnt have so many issues as we have as a graphics cards cpu /gpu works much much faster than a computers processor. Its why bitcoin farms use thousands of them to crunch numbers.

Hell parallel processing would be amazing for us but its not something any encoder offers.

OK so if auto is off on everything. What is your lighting like?

I just have regular lamps with Philips Hue bulbs set to like a pinkish-lavender color.

The weird thing is on the rating report on SM, all the tech stuff is listed as an excellent rating, even the frame rate, but I have never seen even close to the 29.97 fps they say you should have.

Well ideally daylight or cool light is best as tints warmer coolers tend to be darker and can cause a framerate issue. When its daylight. Just try and see how the cam performs with the curtains open. As a test. That SM dashboard thing is junk. never gives the same information as an independent test. Real rtt time. Bring up cmd and type ping streamatemodels.com. It tells you at the bottom what the min max and avg is for rtt. Compare it to the dashboard and its like 30ms off.

Fps now typically we see 24fps so 30fps is above this however monitors can drop a few frames. So the extra few fps helps keep the feed smooth.

Give it a general test using daylight so we can rule out the redish tint to your lights as photography is all based on white/cool light.

Ideally go cfl if possible. Much brighter less electric use and as anyone who sat under halogen bulb lights will tell you alot cooler as well make up lasts longer if you have a crazy long show

Think I've seen those high tech cams they are anywhere from $1000 to $2000, the difference is pretty dramatic in film quality! I personally just don't see the purpose of anything over a C920 for me, for years it has done everything fine without issues. It would be nice to upgrade down the road though to either a Stargazer or the c930e. Found an umbrella kit that had a set of 7 filters and 1 gold lamp, but wonder if its too much lighting. The advice about using daylight is helpful, funny thing is the neighbor's house is directly across from my office window that feels like the size of a box. If I open the curtain to allow any light in they pretty much can see everything and my lovely shaped dildos on display.
That and they have 3 kids..
