    Default Box hair dye.

Are there any drugstore box hair dyes that are worth a shit? My hair is REALLY long so naturally it costs a fortune to get it dyed at the salon. I'm trying to think of ways to temporarily cut costs until I'm back where I want to be financially. So if anyone can recommend a good box hair dye I would appreciate it

NO. I would go to Sally's, if you don't want perm color you can get the stuff that washes out in a few shampoos. They have beauticians on staff, so they can give you a recommendation

One other suggestion- I've been getting mine a 9-10 level blonde for a couple years now, and I just go to the hair school here. It costs $40-60 depending on what specials they are running to do roots and tone everything.
I've never had an issue with them and my hair is still growing well so that might be another option to check out.

Edit: Also keep getting told by stylists that black box dye in particular is the devil. Once you do it, that's it, you have black hair till it grows out. Trying to do any other colors after is not worth it unless you can live with severely damaged hair that is whatever color it decides to turn out.

I use Shea Moisture jet black but I agree with SuperJa that you should only do it if you never plan to color it any other color ever again.

Yes, box dye colors are also very flat, no depth to them.

Don't do box black hair dye! I did that and I wrecked my hair completely. I had to start over and start growing it out all over again. Don't do it! Please! You'll regret it so much. Use a temporary vegetable dye if you have to. Adore is a great brand, and it's pretty cheap.

I second going to Sally's, so much damage is caused by using box dyes and I didn't tell the difference till I switched to Ion Brilliance, the constant sneezing caused by ammonia slowly went away. You will not only save more money by taking better coloring steps, but will have an easier time applying as well. I tell this to my relative all the time, given she uses cheap dyes constantly that causes her hair to look like wire straw. (Nothing over 20vol developer for Ion sensitivity, which most box dyes use 30/40vol)

I use revlon colorsilk midnight blue. I can't pull off blonde and brown looks dull on me, so a shiny blue black makes me look bangin! I wouldn't recommend using it if you want another color any time soon, as it sticks FOREVER. if you do go the box route, definitely get a high end conditioner from a beauty store.
