    Default Was/is this housemom racist?

I don't really like talking about race, but something from audition yesterday (didn't get in, but after this incident, I'm not sure I would work there anyway) at vivid. Now I'm not going to give any names, but when I went to audition, as soon as the housemom had seen me, she had this frightened, deer in the headlights look the entire time she was talking to me. She was friendly of course, but her eyes almost spoke fear, or at least the vibes I picked up from her at the time.

Now, I am a light skinned black girl with a lot of yellow overtones (like a tan) and am pretty thin and I have dreads, I also had on some decent make up and a good outfit (no stripper shoes) but I can't help but wonder about how she was staring at me. Now, I've never had experienced any prejudice or racism growing up so I don't have any previous experiences to relate to this one. But the way she was staring is stuck in my head a little bit. I'm not hugely bothered by it though.

Are things sometimes like this against certain people of color in the clubs, especially in the more upscale ones? I went to hoops and did not receive the same kind of hostility there.

    Anyone else experienced this?

I would be surprised if she was looking at you because you are black; because it is NYC. It might have been the dreads (which can be considered out of place/ too "ethnic"/alternative or not mainstream enough in a upscale club); or the fact you were not wearing proper shoes. The house mom usually has nothing to do with the hiring process.

Oh that I know about the hiring process. Only thing is that once I gain more experience Ill be trying out in Manhattan clubs but I debate if I wear a wig to audition and if it'll stay on.

People act scary for all sorts of reasons. let her stare all she wants. Is staring rude? Perhaps. Idk. Maybe your beauty was mesmerizing. But as long as she didn't say or do anything out of order, that specific situation doesn't seem racist to me.

What does your dreads look like? {Chunky, Small,Smooth, etc} Braids, Kinky Twists, Dreads, and other "Ethnic" hairstyles are very intimidating to quite a bit of white people.

If your natural hair is dreaded, I'd recommended braiding them down and wearing a wig.You can get away with dreads at certain mixed clubs & urban clubs not upscale gown clubs.

If it's the young Asian girl, no...she is not racist. She is a sweet heart. Plus, there were plenty woc when I went there.

It wasn't the Asian one, but I dont want to give out too much info on who it was, just in case anyone on here dances at vivid and is on good terms with housemom.

Housemoms literally don't give a shit unless you come off mentally unstable/trouble or you don't tip them when they deserve to be tipped. Otherwise they could care less, just like any other job. It's the manager you need to worry about, not the housemom.

Most people don't give a shit about others, like are indifferent because they are in their own selfish human world where no one else really matters except those they care about.

That makes sense. So basically they hate anyone that is 'strong' and confident and comes off that way.

I love strong & confident, though I don't hire the dancers, rather put them onstage.

Hard to say if it was the dreads, but given you don't see them very often in 'Upscale' clubs, maybe it was.

I wasn't there so couldn't know for sure, but if there are 'plenty of woc' working there, it's much less likely this was racism.

IMO she was just worried you might be aggressive. I've seen a lot of loser girls go off on people who are really trying to help them at work (I blame the influence of alcohol or drugs.)

Well that's crazy, but I guess that makes sense.
