Default Quitting Smoking and Dry Cough

I looked for a thread about this topic but couldn't find anything less than 5 years old.

I made the decision last week to quit smoking once and for all. I hadn't been smoking like I used to (a pack a day) for a very long time; mostly only when I would drink. However, going on vacation last week I drank almost every day and smoked at least 6-8 cigarettes every day for 4 days. Aside from this vacation a pack of cigarettes would generally last me a week or so; sometimes a little longer.

I developed a very bad smoker's cough and it does not seem to be going away after 5 days. I feel like my lungs and bronchial tubes are "sticky"; and I am making a wheezing/ squeaking kind of noise when I breathe out. I am coughing but nothing is coming out and sometimes I have a little coughing fit.

This has never happened to me before and I have quit smoking in the past for periods up to 2 years. I am not sure if it is because I was younger? Because my "on" smoking streak was longer this time than in the past? Maybe the drier climate where I went on vacation gave me a chest cold and these 2 things are happening concurrently but are unrelated? I just want to know if anyone else experienced this and how long it went on because I can be a bit of a hypochondriac.

Also, I am not going to allow myself to gain weight either- I am thinking to increase my exercise (as much as possible- have a sprained ankle still) and drink hot tea but if anyone has anything else to add I would appreciate it.

    Thanks!

I personally would try a steam room or maybe long steamy shower a few times a week along with warm tea with honey and lemon daily and see if that helps otherwise head to the doctor for an official diagnosis. Maybe the cigarettes triggered something like bronchitis or something. I had a situation once where smoking triggered pharyngitis - yuk!

You have to see how are you breathing. smokers have short breath because of those small inhales before finishing a cig, it becomes a habbit and after you cough. Try to learn breathing into the diaphragm.

Bc of smoking I have chronic Bronchitis
When I was using the patch for years, over time I was able to kick the cough and the constant nag
I started back smoking but went to vaping and notice its back.

I was up about 7 or 8 times last night coughing, but today it seems to be better. Not gone completely, however my sister and her bf that were on the trip with me are both a little sick so I think its a combo of quitting and a cold. Still misery... Thanks for the responses.

Well now I have a nasal cold so maybe it was not the smoking. Pure misery to have a cold in the tropics.

I've had this happen. I was a super heavy smoker all through college and I've started back on and then quit several times. I coughed constantly, like my body was trying to get shit out of my lungs but it wouldn't come. And then it finally would start coming up and I'd always get sick and it would be miserable for a while. The last time I still got sick but I just drank a shitload of water to keep my throat from getting dry and to keep the phlegm from getting too thick and took vitamin C and tried to remind myself that it's worth it. Congrats on quitting, though, it is so hard!

Maybe get an xray to see for any cancer tumors in the lungs.

"The five-year survival rate for lung cancer is 55 percent for cases detected when the disease is still localized (within the lungs). However, only 16 percent of lung cancer cases are diagnosed at an early stage. For distant tumors (spread to other organs) the five-year survival rate is only 4 percent"

When I smoke cigarettes, I take turmeric (curcumin) pills to stop cancer in its tracks (prevention is worth pounds more than fixing). I only smoke 1 or 2 cigarettes every other day. Curcumin also stops a lot of other cancer cells as well.

Since 1% curcumin in the diet was sufficient to effectively suppress NTHi-induced airway inflammation and did not show any toxic effect in WT and CC-LR mice, two groups of 6-week-old CC-LR mice were treated with 1% curcumin for 8 weeks, with one of these groups exposed to the NTHi lysate once weekly for 8 weeks. Two other groups of mice were not treated with curcumin, with one of these exposed weekly to the NTHi lysate for 8 weeks. All groups were killed one day after the eighth NTHi exposure while still under curcumin treatment, and the effect of curcumin on lung tumor progression was analyzed by determining the number of tumors visible on the pleural surface of the lungs and the tumor volume per lung. Curcumin significantly reduced the number of tumors on the lung surface of CC-LR mice not exposed to NTHi lysate by 85% (34 ± 6 without curcumin versus 5 ± 2 with curcumin) and after 8 weekly NTHi exposures by 53% (161 ± 4 without curcumin versus 76 ± 11 with curcumin) (Figure 3B). Curcumin also lowered tumor volume per lung in curcumin-treated mice not exposed to NTHi lysate by 64% (24.1 ± 3.5% versus 8.8 ± 4.6%) and after NTHi exposure by 39% (67.1 ± 9.4% versus 47.9 ± 6.6%) (Figure 3C) by both reducing the size of individual tumors and the total number of tumors (Figure 3A).

Also curcumin has a low bioavailability. But adding black pepper, liposomes,

    -----
Another study also showed that piperine (20 mg/kg orally) when administered with curcumin (2 g/kg orally) enhances the bioavailability of the latter up to 20-fold more in epileptic rats [111].

This effect of piperine on the pharmacokinetics of curcumin has been shown to be much greater in humans than in rats. In humans, curcumin bioavailability was increased by 2,000% at 45 minutes after co-administering curcumin orally with piperine, whereas in rats, it has been found that concomitant administration of piperine 20 mg/kg with curcumin 2 g/kg increased the serum concentration of curcumin by 154% for a short period of 1-2 hours post drug. The study shows that in the dosages used, piperine enhances the serum concentration, extent of absorption and bioavailability of curcumin in both rats and humans with no adverse effects [95].

Another formulation designed for improvement of bioavailability of curcumin is liposomal curcumin. Liposomes are considered as effective drug carriers because of their ability to solubilize hydrophobic compounds and to alter their pharmacokinetic properties

I actually make my own capsules of turmeric for my thyroid as well as take liquid chlorophyll every day. I didn't realize the turmeric had anti-carcinogenic properties as well. Good news.

Congratulations on making this choice! Stick with it and don't go back! Your life will change for the better. I smoked a pack a day for 12 years. I have not had a cigarette in almost 16 years. So it can be done.

Now as for the cough....your lungs are cleaning out all the gunk and it's normal for your lungs to be wheezy/ cough-y for a little while. Steam baths help loosen things up. The wheezeyness should go away in a few days/weeks. Your lungs are clearing out. Good luck!

Thanks. It has gotten a little better since last week (when I posted this). I was also having a bit of a runny nose but my sinuses were fine so I couln't understand where the boogers were coming from! I am glad I did it. I have been trying to quit for a long time. I was also super worried about gaining weight but for some reason I am also down like 5 lbs. Maybe my life is finally coming together!

Gia when you take responsibility for your life and your health, the Universe takes note and all sorts of wonderful possibilities start opening up for you. Smoking is so negative and damaging. I'm embarrassed I ever did it, but I was young and quitting turned my life around. Do nice little things for yourself. When you're feeling better, buy yourself an inexpensive bouquet of flowers. Give yourself little rewards. I know it is hard as fuck to quit, but it will be a decision you'll never regret.
