Default January 2017 SSL Certificates Required For Webmasters

It's not a new thing that webmasters who conduct ecommerce get a boost from google if they have an SSL Certificate. But going forward even if you don't have a shopping cart on your site you will be labeled as not secure to all visitors. Browsers Like Firefox and The newest Chrome are stepping it up. Google has announced that sites that require passwords, logins and contact forms will need an SSL Certificate or they will mark your site to all visitors as unsafe. This could be a bad thing because people may think your site has malware or something.

Start the process of securing your websites now so you’re ready for the inevitable come January 2017: visitors asking you why your website is insecure; a percentage of them being alarmed and just leaving, abandoning your website for good
    http://minnov8.com/2016/11/05/google...-january-2017/

Firefox has already started it. I'm warning you all before your site takes a hit in rankings because it can be very difficult to pull yourself back up once you get on googles shit list. And SSL Certificates are expensive. So start planning.

Ok I was wrong about worrying about the cost. Looks like there's now this: https://letsencrypt.org/ which is a free SSL service that's just as good as paid ones. I found it while looking through my DreamHost panel for SSL stuff. Here's an article from them: https://help.dreamhost.com/hc/en-us/...icate-overview

Hopefully that will be helpful for y'all!

Nothing stupid about wanting to learn more about protecting your business. So yes it does affect it all if you don't have a the SSL Certificate. Just to be clear here is the difference between Http and Https (secured)

Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is the secure version of HTTP, the protocol over which data is sent between your browser and the website that you are connected to. The 'S' at the end of HTTPS stands for 'Secure'. It means all communications between your browser and the website are encrypted.

Im actually glad you brought this up because I had forgotten about my MC site. I'm considering deleting it all together. But I just noticed that my site wasnt https encrypted. I always assumed that it was? And I just looked in there forum and didn't find any mention of this. Ijust submitted a ticket asking about this lets see what happens

Indiebill- they didn't build my site so I'm not sure how that works? Are you all able to have access to your site to make changes whenever you want? Are they providing the hosting for you? But yes absolutely you will need to look into getting a certificate too.

Godaddy, yup the're a hosting company and if you call them right now saying you want to buy an private email account I guarantee that they'll try to shove a SSL Certificate down your throat. I hate all of the up selling that they do. I can respect the hustle but sometimes its just disrespectful and irrelevant the way that they do it. It's best to do your research before calling them because otherwise you may end up paying for something that you really don't need.

I have just spoken with dreamhost. the let's encrypt ssl certificate is fine, but you will need to set dreamhost to force https only otherwise your site will still show a warning for people coming from your none https links. Here are the steps https://help.dreamhost.com/hc/en-us/...ith-WordPress-
You'll also need to change all your incoming links to the https, a plugin like this can do it https://wordpress.org/plugins/velvet-blues-update-urls/
You can check what links you have (that will need to be changed) here https://www.whynopadlock.com/

My indiebill store page already shows https and a 'secure connection' message. I don't have my whole site with them anymore, just the storefront so someone else with one of their free sites will have to chime in if the whole site shows https

The actual payment pages for customers has the green bar up top, that's encrypted. But the individual sites that link to those pages, do not. I just checked a few that I know had sites built by them.

I have sites on hostgator and godaddy. Godaddy is not playing around. I just found out that they are blocking plugins so that you have to use their godaddy specific products to get things secured. Fucking savages

This is what Model Centro had to say about it:

Sites that dont have SSL certificates will get flagged with warnings for all visitors. Will MC have any plans to avoid this? This is being talked about and soon to occur as early as next month. Thank you December 19

MC:Greetings! I have consulted with our developers, they say there will be no warnings, except the cases when the user wants to go from "https" site to "http". December 20

That's how it is currently. But going forward its gonna be different https://security.googleblog.com/2016...ecure-web.html

MC:Hey there! I talked to our guys, they are aware of these changes. So, they are discussing it too

Thanks for posting the MC repsonse PGD. It will be interesting to see how quickly they will role this out though. I am a little surprised that they dont already have https enabled considering the nature of this business and surely it wluld be a positive to get more models to sign up.

Well technically from a security standpoint it's not necessary to secure EVERY page on a website, it's just more hassle to do that. For instance, most sites don't have https on their home page, but switch over to https when it comes time to collect payment or other sensitive info. Though some webmasters do opt to secure their entire site just to make the average user feel better about using the site. Someone mentioned that streammate isn't secured, and while yes, if you go to streammate.com that page isn't secure, but if you click on the "free account" button at the top right it takes you to an https page. So technically streammate is secure where it's important to be secure.

What google is doing is making it so that everyone's going to have to switch over to https even if they don't technically need to, just to appear safe to the average user. I don't really like google being what I call the "internet police" and dictating what webmasters need to do in order for their sites to be seen or trusted but I digress...

Anything we need to check on dreamhost to secure privacy? When it says set a certificate confirming identity (or something.. the terms page for Let's Encrypt was a lot to take in, lol) does that mean through dreamhost or let's encrypt? Or will it be using the whois, or other info..?? Confused.

It wouldn't normally be needed on any site (or page) that doesn't collect personal information, such as email forms, payment gateways etc. However with this new update it looks like the google algorithm will place sites without security lower in its rankings. So if you have a blog or personal website which you use to attract customers, it may be less visible. Also it will display a warning that your website may be unsafe, which will obviously detract people from looking because they think there may be malware on there or something

Dreamhost was pretty straightforward, I just checked the box and followed the steps above (see links in my previous post) x
