    Default Food purchases

How much do you spend on food, and what is the most common food item?

For me, I notice I am buying a lot of Rotisserie Chicken *this is my binge meal with tons of mustard*/Iceberg lettuce/Spinach/Grapefruit the past couple of weeks. I was doing canned vegetables for a minute, but I don't know if they filled me up. I probably spend between $100-$180 in food a month (I don't know if that's a lot of money in just food alone... trying to cut it down especially in chicken). Normally I don't go to the grocery store more than 3 or 4 x a week, and only spend about $10-$12. Grocery store is right across the street from me.... so it's not like a big deal to go there, and make an epic trip.

I don't have any kids, spouse, or pets.... so just me. I normally save 80% of my income anyways these days (like 80% is literally going into my saving account and I can't touch it)

I spend about $120/month on food and that's for 2 of us. It's mostly snacks or quick meal type things... we both work nights, and he often eats at work (restaurant manager, so he can literally have a steak for free :o )

Most common items: Staples of milk/bread/eggs/tea, ramen (ick) and Lunchables or those tuna salad & cracker packs.
I try to cook an actual meal once or twice a week, but for the most part we are grown adults who eat like grade school children

Lol. I understand that... I eat like a savage person, like how basic can you get, just chicken? Just lettuce/or spinach and vinegar? And grapefruits... well that's my diet right now. I don't even cook. The only thing I do special is protein drink, and that's only when I work out.

If I was married and had children, it may be a different story. But if I am working and he's working, he better take us out, or cook at least as half as I do lol! I'm not into the whole "woman cooks, and cleans" unless I was a housewife, and that for sure isn't happening.

Three (soon to be four) person household so We spend about 100 a week on food. At least. I love trying new health foods out, and we cook every night so food is where I really splurge. Plus my husband and son eat like loggers. Lots of fruits, veggies, chicken, fish (I tried monk fish tonight, sooo good), and special k cereal lmao. and I'm going dairy free so coconut products to substitute. My family has a small farm so I got duck and chicken eggs for free.

I shop every other week and spend like 100, lots of veggies, chicken thighs, rice, salad and I love sweet treats, cookies and frozen macarons from trader Joes to have with tea. Also tins of soup and black beans corn tortillas.

I spend quite a bit. I spent $40.00 at the store the other day just basically one one meal. I bought organic brussel sprouts that were pre-cut and "shaved" (they all look to be the same size), organic italian soda, 2 steaks (I probably eat steak 3 times a year so I bought some decent ones), organic spinach and crab dip, store made tortillas chips and some white chocolate baking chips (making cake pops for my niece). Normally, I do not eat half of these things I bought but I guess it was kind of a cheat/ treat meal....

My normal grocery list consists of mainly organic fruits (I buy sooo many lemons), a case of water (I drink probably 5-6 bottles of water every day), coffee and teas, dog food, and whatever cleaning supplies I need for the week. I also like these Miso soup packets and fish or shrimp, occasionally chicken breasts. If I am feeling the need for carbs I get some gluten free pasta or brown rice but I try to not eat too much of either. I would say I spend about 70.00- 80.00 a week and that is just for me.

We're both vegan so I think our food budget is pretty low considering we eat at home almost 100% of the time.

We stock up on pantry goods such as rice, quinoa, lentils, beans, coconut milk, non dairy milk, nuts, seeds, oatmeal, flour, baking ingrediants etc once or twice a year and spend probably a couple hundred. Once a week we go to the grocery store and buy loads of fruits and veggies and generally spend around $50.

My budget changes so drastically every month but it's roughly $200 a month. That's because I hate grocery shopping. I only go once a month and then I start eating out when I run out of food at home.
For February I brought meal prep containers and I'm researching meal prep for beginners. It'll be lots of chicken and fish for a while. I'm also going to go shopping once a week now.
I start tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Being dairy free cuts out a lot of my options for eating out. Back when I was vegetarian, I ate a lot of cheese so it was a nice change having to make everything at home.

I guess my most common good purchases are spinach, soy free veggie burgers, vegan bread, and almond butter

Haven't really calculated budget but it sure is a lot less than eating out all the time

I live alone and spend ~400 a month but that is also for toiletries and household items. I don't understand where it all goes... When I was 17-20, before I started dancing I was poor as fuck and qualified for $200/month of food stamps and I remember feeling like I was rich at the grocery store. I could barely spend it all. But then again, I only ate mac & cheese, pop tarts, cereal and frozen pizza back then.

Now I buy healthy food but usually don't splurge on organic and I still run out of money a few days before the end of the month ^_^ I buy tuna fish and rotisserie chicken (I wont cook meat in my house) rice, lots of fruits and a veggies, cottage cheese, rice chips, naked fruit smoothies, ice cream, healthier cereal, eggs and aged cheese.

I also spend about 80 of that 400 on vitamins. I take a liquid iron supplement that costs about 50/month. Its worth it.
Do your future self a favor and work hard now.

I eat low carb (and feel amazing with this way of eating) so my meals end up being pretty cheap.
    I'd say $50 / week (but I don't live in USA)

I seriously don't understand this. Organic milk is $6, lasts maybe a week. 1pd coffee (illy) is $15, lasts 10 days. Orange juice $4 lasts one week. Fresh croissant (1) is $2 a day. So for this light continental breakfast, you pay $150 a month. I realize you could cheapen the stuff, but you could also expensivate it (I just made that up, good word). This is middle of the road prices.

The chicken you mention above is $13.99 here. Tenderloin is $34/pd. Bacon is $7/pd. Those all last a day, maybe two. $180/month is $6 a day. How....?

I used to spend a fortune on organic vegetables and fruit, I now buy frozen fruit and non organic veg. 1/3 will be organic but I have noticed my grocery bill is much cheaper by all means. I wash my non organic and soak them in this liquid that cleans the veg/fruit and its really amazing to see all the dirt from the veg becoming cleaner and it turns the water brown. It also kills pesticides so its great and the veg tastes so much better and cleaner.

I am loving coconut water and always buy 1 litre of it every week, however it is getting expensive and its about $5 a carton so not cheap! these special waters like coconut, birch tree, cactus are pricey and I am thinking to myself do I really need this? when Fuji or Evian water is the best water to buy and loads cheaper!! just another gimmick for people to spend their money on? new smoothies coming out all the time vegetable and fruit ones and they are not even organic!

my work has been so slow last week and this week that I have been to the shop almost daily buying stuff it's insane! and I need to stick to a budget! lol

Idk why but I LOVE grocery shopping!

I go like once a week and I spend 30-50$. Usually closer to 50$ lol but yesterday I spent 30 something. I normally buy veggies, some fruit (apples, tangerines, blueberries), bags of caesar salad, some type of bread (lately I get pita bread), eggs, pasta or cous cous if I need any, yogurt (I love activia), soy milk & oatmeal if I need it, and then random little snacks (like string cheese or applesauce).

I probably spend more than I need on food but I'm like my dad he always buys way more than is necessary and then ends up having to clean out the fridge cause of all the uneaten food lol.

Mind me asking what you use, to soak your produce in?^ Thanks!
Me, gosh Idk, I never tracked it. Today I spent $6.00 on a taco dinner for lunch, & had veg sushi for light dinner, 6.00 also.
I do buy organic coffee from Whole Foods, I don't get a lot & it lasts cause I only drink a cup, sometimes 2, a day. I've been making bulletproof coffee, it has butter & coconut oil in it, sounds awful but it's great & very sustainable.

I live in AK and the food up here is expensive as hell, my grocery bill is usually between 75$ and 150$ every two weeks, depending on whats good. Most of the produce goes bad if you look at it wrong. My list almost always includes eggs, bread, cheese, and whatever produce is in season and looking decent. Right now I'm eating a lot of hearty veg like broccoli, endives, carrots etc. I 've noticed a lot of people dont eat belgian endives but they are fantastic if you cut in half and roast 15 min on each side at 400f with a little balsamic, olive oil, sea salt and cracked black pepper. I usually have with some brie and french bread mmm. I eat meat only a few times a week, usually roasted chicken breast or pan fried salmon. I love to cook since it tastes better than eating out and usually have leftovers too

Bahuba- I am not sure if you have mentioned before where you live but you are either shopping at an expensive store or live in an expensive area (maybe you said you live in NY and I missed in the 2000 times I have read your posts). I don't drink milk but when my nephew lived here I bought Organic milk for $3.50 (the brand actually lasts a month!) I bought some bacon for a chef friend of mine that was store made (I think it was Hickory smoked if I remember) or for $2.99!! A rotisserie chicken here is between 3.99 (Costco) and $6.00 at a grocery store. Obviously, I would not have to pay $4 for Orange Juice- I could drive to a tourist stand and get a bag of oranges for $5.00 and make my own.....

But, I digress... To other readers - if you are trying to save money on your grocery budget you have to shop around a little bit. I don't buy nearly as much any more since I live alone but this method has worked for me over the years----- I buy some of my pantry items up north in the Summer, for ex. I buy a huge container of Maple Syrup in an off brand store they only have in RI for maybe $8-12 that lasts me at least the whole year. A bottle of the same size is nearly $30.00 at Publix (Fl and GA chain). The same store also carries that brand "Bob's Stone Mill" or "Bob's Stone Ground", which carries a lot of gluten free flours and baking mixes. They sell these products in other stores but they are 1/3 of the price at this store or at Big Lots. I also buy a lot of spices of at Big Lots and the dollar store (check the ingredients to make sure they do not have artificial fillers). Not so much now but when I used to have other people living with me or if I am going to have guests for extended periods of times I buy my meat at a speciality store.

A lot of stores that specialize in selling meat or stores that are not a bog chain will have "freezer packages" for ex. for 29.99 you get 5 lbs of chicken leg quarters (which you can cut with a cleaver and use for a few different things), 5 lbs of chuck. 5 lbs of chicken wings, some steak or ribs.... etc. Many places will make substitutions to this is there is something you do not want (ie. pork or turkey wings). I would go there and then to my local farmers market and buy my produce sep. I would basically get the staples I always need (like onions, garlic, peppers, apples) and then whatever was on sale. I would also grab things off the stand of what was marked down (because it was nearing expiration) for juicing or deserts/ freezing etc.

I would then get my staples at Wal-mart or a grocery store (rice, eggs, drinks, canned goods, bread) etc. but buy the store or generic brand whenever possible. At one point I had 3 adults and one kid in my house and my friend that was living here had his kids every other weekend. I also entertained a lot and also give a lot of meals to my next door neighbor. So, I was making very reasonably 300 meals (counting by plate) a month and was spending less than $250 a month on groceries. This was making everything more or less from scratch.

I was not buying the healthiest, healthiest food but it was not junk either. Always tried to buy organic produce and snacks for the kids without HFC, artificial dyes or chemical preservatives.

Now, a lot had changed. I am actually starting a super hardcore cleanse in 46 minutes so I think my grocery bill will be like $10 a week, but I know some people are trying to make their budget stretch and I thought maybe some of that can help them....

Without liquor or household items, I average around $125 per week on food. I do a farm share for 20-25 weeks (depending on the harvest that year) which runs about $550 per year & results in lots of frozen fruit and veggies, preserves, and some dehydrated foods. I know a few fishermen and hunters, so I can usually get fresh caught seasonal fish and game for next to nothing from them (think $2 per pound on salmon and clams, free deer in exchange for letting someone use part of my freezer, etc.). I also buy half a lamb per year & that makes up the majority of my red meat intake.

My big ticket items at the store are usually a combo of high end cheeses (I have a drawer dedicated to it in my fridge), olives, artichoke hearts, tea, nuts, honey, chicken breasts, citrus fruits, mushrooms, fresh pasta (I need to invest in a pasta maker) & cured meats. I tend to only go once per week unless I'm missing something.

Life is too short to eat bad food!

Prices can vary regionally. In areas with high cost of living plus lack of good produce, eating healthfully is a minimum of $120 per person per week.

I've tried for years and have yet been able to get my meals to less than $280/mo Plus the kid demands eating at school - they have the nerve to have real chefs - which is another $80/mo

I use digital coupons at the grocery store to try and save even more.

^this. Rent has gone up 30% in my area in the past 4 years and everything has been subject to inflation as a result. If i purchased everything at a store and started eating more red meat again, I'd be spending close to a grand per month without a doubt.
