Default Eyelash Extensions & why I love them

Hey ladies! I didn't see any recent threads discussing eyelash extensions so I thought I'd post my experiences and opinions with them!

I started getting my eyelashes done a few months ago and I absolutely love it. It saves me so much time in the morning because I've found I no longer need to wear eyeshadow or eyeliner most days and I still look super glam. I also look much better with zero makeup on and I look so much better in the morning which is great for adult sleepovers. I also use wonderbrow eyebrow gel for my brows so I can go to bed and wake up with brows still. My natural brows and eyelashes are sooo blonde they are invisible, so my results with eyelash extensions & wonderbrow are very significant.

If you're considering getting them done here's the process and some tips for caring for them.

The process (in my experience, could be different at a different lash studio):
First time takes an hour, refills take 30-45 minutes. It is a tiny bit uncomfortable. You lie on your back with your eyes closed, and the technician puts these white pads under your eyes so they can see what they're doing, and they might also pull the skin on your eyelids back a little with a special kind of tape. It doesn't hurt, but it is slightly weird to have your eyelid taped into a strange configuration to make it easier for them to see your individual lashes. They secure the lashes individually. In my experience, if you open your eyes before the glue is totally dry it does burn a little, just tell the technician and they can let your lashes dry more with a fan.
I usually tip my technician $5-7, and my refills cost $50 which I've read is a little lower than in other cities.

My lashes last me 3 weeks before I need a refill, I can even go 4 if I need to save money, but they do start looking sparse on week 4. If you don't take care of them, or get them wet often, they will only last 2 weeks.

This is how I keep my lashes looking good:
*only wear oil-free mascara. I use Maybelene in the orange tube.
*do not get your eyelashes wet for the first 24 hours, at the very least. To keep them lasting longer, try to never get them wet. I accomplish this by not washing my face in the shower, and tilting my head back when washing my hair -with practice you'll get good at making sure the water does not hit your face at all. I wash my face at the sink with a facial cleaning brush, and I avoid my entire eye area. In order to prevent water from running down my forehead into my eyes, I wash the bottom half of my face first, pat dry, and then wash my forehead separately with my head bent forward over the sink so the water runs away from my eyes. Over time, I've become skilled at washing my face in such a way that the water runs down my nose instead of into my eyes-- I can wash my face with my eyes open now. Then I use a makeup wipe to carefully clean my eye area, avoiding my lashes.
*brush your eyelashes with a spoolie (a clean mascara wand thing)
*I let my mascara flake off & wipe it away from my under-eye with a makeup wipe in the morning. But you can also veerrryyyy carefully clean your lashes with a makeup wipe if necessary (if they're clumpy or something), just put your finger on the other side as you wipe upwards with your other finger wrapped in the wipe, and avoid the base where the lash is attached.
*be careful not to smoosh them too much while sleeping. A restrictive eye mask is a no-no. I drape a light tank top over my eyes and this doesn't seem to disturb my lashes. Sleep on the edge of your pillow while on your side or stomach to avoid smooshing your lashes into your pillow.

All in all, I'm only spending about $30 more a month than I was on strip lashes and I save so much time each day that getting eyelash extensions was worth it for me. The care seems like a hassle but once its incorporated into your routine and you become skilled at avoiding water it doesn't add any time to my routine at all.

You don't have to be terrified of getting your lashes wet, I used to be the same way and did not want to touch them at all even though my lash chick recommends regularly lathering them up with baby shampoo. I wasn't doing it and finally during one of my appointments she was like 'You HAVE to start washing them, you're going to get an eye infection.' So I did and guess what; since I began shampooing them they actually last longer.

    Ok.
Some ?'s here, sorry..1st off how much is the cost, the initial cost?
The Maybelline mascara you mentioned, do you mean the one in the pink tube? If not, could you be more specific about which Maybelline. Thanks!
How do you go about finding a salon, look on Yelp?

Really? I only wash my face with baby shampoo already and I had the opposite experience. When i washed mine I lost a ton of lashes, but I didn't use soap on my lashes specifically, just water. I'll have to do some experimenting.

The maybelline pink tube w/ the green lid is also oil free and therefore suitable for eyelash extensions. I just checked the one I use, and its actually covergirl (oops) lash blast volume.

The initial cost for me was $90 but I had a coupon. I varies greatly between studios and cities though. Yep, just look on yelp and find one with good reviews and pictures.

What I do is I get like a drop of baby shampoo on my index fingers and then just gently run them over the bases of my lashes back and forth a few times so they get a little lathered. It's done very smoothly, I don't mash the lashes around or anything. Maybe because you just did water and didn't have the slipperiness of the shampoo there was too much friction?

I LOVE eyelash extensions! I've had them for so long now I can't imagine what I'm gonna look like when I decide to not get them done anymore lol.

I don't really wash mine but I've noticed if I put too much mascara on them for work and never wash it off they start to come out faster. I think the makeup like weighs them down or something and that makes them fall off. So I think you should just wash them if you're putting mascara on them. If I just don't touch them at all with makeup or by washing they last a good amount of time.

Also, I've noticed I always love how they look when I get them done by a little asian lady at a nail salon rather than like a lady at a lash bar or something. Plus it's always way cheaper at the nail salon. I used to think more expensive meant better for my own lashes and better quality but I honestly think it's just how you take care of them that matters. Like if you mess with them and pull at them they'll pull your real lashes out so don't do that. But the asian ladies just somehow know how to give you that really dramatic pretty look that's perfect for the club. Whenever I've gone to a lash bar type place where it's more expensive they've always been way too natural and not dramatic enough for me.

If i am not correct, there is an ingredient that you have to stay away from that's in a lot of cleaners and shampoos. I would ask the lady who does your lashes what ingredient that is. I keep thinking it's glycol or something along those lines.

I had these and didn't consider how annoying they are if you have glasses. Unless they are trimmed short they will touch the glass

Yeah I definitely had to buy sunglasses specifically with that in mind. The benefits waaaaay outweigh the cons for me personally though. I've been getting them done for years now.

That is true, I've found that glasses & sunglasses with nose pads sit far enough away from your face that long lashes don't brush against them. I had the same problem with strip lashes.
