Hey ladies! I didn't see any recent threads discussing eyelash extensions so I thought I'd post my experiences and opinions with them!
I started getting my eyelashes done a few months ago and I absolutely love it. It saves me so much time in the morning because I've found I no longer need to wear eyeshadow or eyeliner most days and I still look super glam. I also look much better with zero makeup on and I look so much better in the morning which is great for adult sleepovers. I also use wonderbrow eyebrow gel for my brows so I can go to bed and wake up with brows still. My natural brows and eyelashes are sooo blonde they are invisible, so my results with eyelash extensions & wonderbrow are very significant.
If you're considering getting them done here's the process and some tips for caring for them.
The process (in my experience, could be different at a different lash studio):
First time takes an hour, refills take 30-45 minutes. It is a tiny bit uncomfortable. You lie on your back with your eyes closed, and the technician puts these white pads under your eyes so they can see what they're doing, and they might also pull the skin on your eyelids back a little with a special kind of tape. It doesn't hurt, but it is slightly weird to have your eyelid taped into a strange configuration to make it easier for them to see your individual lashes. They secure the lashes individually. In my experience, if you open your eyes before the glue is totally dry it does burn a little, just tell the technician and they can let your lashes dry more with a fan.
I usually tip my technician $5-7, and my refills cost $50 which I've read is a little lower than in other cities.
My lashes last me 3 weeks before I need a refill, I can even go 4 if I need to save money, but they do start looking sparse on week 4. If you don't take care of them, or get them wet often, they will only last 2 weeks.
This is how I keep my lashes looking good:
*only wear oil-free mascara. I use Maybelene in the orange tube.
*do not get your eyelashes wet for the first 24 hours, at the very least. To keep them lasting longer, try to never get them wet. I accomplish this by not washing my face in the shower, and tilting my head back when washing my hair -with practice you'll get good at making sure the water does not hit your face at all. I wash my face at the sink with a facial cleaning brush, and I avoid my entire eye area. In order to prevent water from running down my forehead into my eyes, I wash the bottom half of my face first, pat dry, and then wash my forehead separately with my head bent forward over the sink so the water runs away from my eyes. Over time, I've become skilled at washing my face in such a way that the water runs down my nose instead of into my eyes-- I can wash my face with my eyes open now. Then I use a makeup wipe to carefully clean my eye area, avoiding my lashes.
*brush your eyelashes with a spoolie (a clean mascara wand thing)
*I let my mascara flake off & wipe it away from my under-eye with a makeup wipe in the morning. But you can also veerrryyyy carefully clean your lashes with a makeup wipe if necessary (if they're clumpy or something), just put your finger on the other side as you wipe upwards with your other finger wrapped in the wipe, and avoid the base where the lash is attached.
*be careful not to smoosh them too much while sleeping. A restrictive eye mask is a no-no. I drape a light tank top over my eyes and this doesn't seem to disturb my lashes. Sleep on the edge of your pillow while on your side or stomach to avoid smooshing your lashes into your pillow.
All in all, I'm only spending about $30 more a month than I was on strip lashes and I save so much time each day that getting eyelash extensions was worth it for me. The care seems like a hassle but once its incorporated into your routine and you become skilled at avoiding water it doesn't add any time to my routine at all.
