The biggest concern for your car insurance is if they monitor your mileage and believe that mileage to be greater than that of a personal driver. Then they will want to make you upgrade your insurance.
Uber covers you under their policies whenever you are driving to a pick up and whenever you have a passenger in your car. You just need your personal insurance to sign up.

One thing that can make a big difference is when you are available to drive. I heard that there is a big difference in rates depending on the hours you're available to work. I have a friend who drove for Lyft. She said that they pay a lot more for very late night hours. It depends on where you're located and what the supply and demand for drivers is at different hours.

I would recommend you do what the article says.
You pay for comprehensive insurance, are in an accident with a customer and you hit a tree, the insurance company finds out you were using your vehicle for commercial purposes then they can tell you they will not pay to fix it. I would call and check your insurance company for what you are covered for, and if they do, ask to get it in writing. You’ll also need insurance. Check with your insurance company to make sure your policy covers you when you’re using your car for commercial purposes rather than just for personal use, because it probably doesn’t. If your provider does offer a hybrid
personal/commercial coverage, your premium for personal coverage will likely go up when you tell your agent you’re driving for Uber.
Uber provides some commercial insurance coverage for its drivers, according to an Uber spokesman. But you still have to have your own policy and make sure that your coverage applies when you use your personal car for commercial gain.
Its a risk of course, you determine what is your comfort level, but it is a hidden cost.
So it looks like i *would* need commercial auto insurance. I'm sure many folks take the risk and choose to not get it. But a few insurance quotes I've gotten have specifically asked if I'll be using the car for ride-sharing purposes, and upon answering yes, direct you to commercial insurance as a requirement. I saw this on both progressive and geico, i believe. Add that to having to pay for my own taxes, pay for gas and repairs/value of the car decreasing more quickly with increased mileage, plus the legit dangers of simply being on the road more often, and this is WAY not worth it to me. Even if i were to make $25/hour, once all is said and done, you may only be pocketing $10/hour (generous estimate), which is simply not acceptable to me, for my purposes.
Oh well! I'm glad i looked into it. Definitely learned some things! Thank you to all for participating, and feel free to continue using this thread for your own questions!![]()

If you're looking to make some extra cash, have you considered waitressing? If you get a job at a good restaurant, you can make some decent money on the side.

I drive for Uber!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ive been doing it a couple of months now, honestly, Its for the car. I rent my car through Enterprise becuse they have an agreement with Uber. My payment for the car comes out of my Uber earnings. My own car decided it has had enough, and I was stuck like Chuck for awhile there. I had signed up for Uber a long time ago, and just happened to get a text from them after my car died saying something like..still want to drive for Uber? Need a car? Check out this link! And I was like..well damn, let me go check out that link lol
I will admit, the rental is expensive, but all car related costs, insurance, maint, etc are included. Only thing I have to pay addtl is gas. Okay, car out of the way since you already have one...minus my expenses (for the car rental payment and gas) I make about $12/hr...closer to $20/hr on weekends and holidays Could I make more getting a side job somewhere else? Maaaybe. But then Id be working on their schedule. I also escort, so Id be getting faced with situations like...cant take a date because I have to work my shift and that doesnt work for me cause no job is going to pay enough to make up for that. Also, if I just simply dont feel like working..I dont. If I have nothing to do, I get on the road and make some money. For me, the flexibility is well worth it.
Pay is weekly...mine is Wed, Ive heard of some getting paid on Thurs. During busy times and holidays there are surges when rides cost and pay more to encourage drivers to get on the road. So times like evening rush hour or weekends are the busiest. Personally, I dont like working those hours because...they are convoluted. Dealing with exhausted people cranky after working all day, or people who are wasted and beligerant after partying all night just isnt my bag. But thats just me...for many people, those are the only times they'll work because its busy.
Umm...oh insurance. Yes, check the insurance laws in your state, because they are different everywhere. One thing that is the same everywhere is that if you dont tell your insurance company that you do rideshare, they can cancel your policy. So whether or not you are actively on the clock, if you get into an accident, it will come out that you are an Uber driver (I have no idea how, just have heard enough stories to know..somewhere somehow dots start getting connected) and your insurer will not only not pay for the accident, but will drop you.
However..the cost of this commercial license is SO FRIGGING EXPENSIVE that the majority of people are out there driving without one on a hope and a prayer that their insurance company will not find out. Also, overall, you will make more driving for UberX. Yeah, you get more per ride with UberXL and so forth, but...those cars use up more gas for one, and for two, the demand for them just isnt there cause people are not taking UberBlack to get to and from work or heading to a drs appt etc. The most popular ride is the cheapest way to ride. I live in a fancy schmancy tourist destination lol and even then...those fancy rides will also take UberX rides because they expensive rides are too few and far between to make any kind of money.
Okay, thats all I can think of....so far so good, I really like it, not something Im going to get rich off, but it certainly does do two things for me...1) it has helped me get a car..albeit expenseive, but at least it comes out of my pay that I can earn whenever in my spare time and 2) it provides me with a cover job to my escorting business.
Don't blink. Don't even blink. Blink and you're dead. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink!

^ That actually sounds pretty cool. ^
Im still not active ( haven't sent old state license in ).

An acquaintance of mine in Las Vegas does Uber on the side (she has a full time clerical job.) She said it's not that great but keep in mind Vegas is the land of a million & one taxis.
I'd Uber if it was just trips to and from the Airport.
btw waitressing is not that bad, it depends on the place.
Just took my first Uber ride a couple weeks ago. It was cool! All three time is was men but I rode after 5pm so maybe that had something to do with it?
