Question Problems with Weight Loss (Hypothyroidism, IBS, and Bloating)

I had artificial disc surgery on my neck a year ago. I was out of work for two months and not allowed to lift. My muscle turned to fat. I gained about ten pounds. I hadn't been able to lose it during last year. I dance and also do professional pole fitness. I should have not had any problems with weight loss.

But, I have hashimoto's/hypothyroidism, irritable bowel syndrome with constipation, and bloating issues. The thyroid problems slow down my metabolism and activity levels (I am literally tired ALL of the time). I played around with veganism last year which activated the IBS and bloating. Now, though, it seems that whatever I eat (even the good veggies and fruits) still make me bloat. Four times in 2016, I was asked if I was pregnant (once at work by another dancer).

I basically starve myself on days I don't work so I don't bloat up. I try to stick to gluten free protein bars or fish, but I get hunger pains so bad while at work.

I was sick all of December and barely able to get out of bed or exercise and gained another 8 pounds. Because of my metabolism, I can't lose it.

Does anybody have any suggestions or advice for the best workouts? As for food, I am trying to follow the FODMAP diet for IBS and if I eat anything not on the diet, I eat small portions.

Does anybody else here "suffer" from any of those diseases, too? And if so, what do you do?

I wish I could afford a personal trainer and it is definitely something I aspire to do, but money is tight and business at my club is bad.

I don't know, I am not a doctor, and I don't recommend this (but I'll say in a 'my opinion') type way. Have you tried the ketogenic diet, no carbs pretty much, carbs are what causes bloating because carbs retain water. Ketogenic is pretty much eating coconut oil, eggs, and healthy lean meat.

I love the step machine right now... it's like the perfect machine when I am too tired to run. I still lose like 200-300 calories in a less than 30 minute duration **assuming the machine is right**. The step machine is also supposed to tone up the glutes, and leg muscles... it's too early to tell though.

I run 3x a day, because I can't run for any longer than 40-1 hr... it's too tough mentally. Enya's music is really helping me right now (is that weird gym music?) I try to zone out when I run/jog, and think of a "happy place".

That's about it. I am sorry about your situation.

Ehh... protein bars have too many calories, sorry to be a Regina George on that. Try protein drinks with low carbs, maximize the calories per protein.

I was going to say "screw that dancer's opinion", but you know what, sometimes the meanest comments have some truth in it, I rather know the ugly truth, than believe in a beautiful lie.

And does your chest hurt at all? I also know that bloating could be a sign of heart disease, because the blood isn't pumping efficiently, and that is edema *retention of water*. And it causes stomach bloating.

And the chronic fatigue could be a sign of diabetes as well, so I would get that check out too from a doctor.

First and foremost, I am not a medical professional so I do not mean to give you a diagnosis or advice- I am only speaking to my experience. I also practice holistic/ eastern medicine.

I do have thyroid problems. I am hypothyroid and have nodules on my thyroid. It caused me to gain almost 40 lbs in about 2 years (at 5'00" that is a TON of weight). I also have symptoms similar to IBS but mine are caused by an intestinal parasite; which I think precluded the thyroid issue. I have found turmeric is very helpful for my thyroid issues. I bought a huge container of it on Amazon for $7.50 and either make capsules with it or add it to my morning shot of Chlorophyll (also purchased on Amazon).

I find it helpful to keep my body Alkaline (that is what the Chlorophyll is for) and avoid Gluten. There are several people in my family that have Celiac disease. I do not have Celiac but Gluten makes me feel very, very tired. For instance, the other day - I had a veggie sandwich but it was on bread. I was SOOOO tired I could not hold my own head up at my desk. In the last year or so if I do not eat really clean I get super tired.

I know you said you did the vegan thing, but did you have bread or other things that had gluten? I see you said you stick to gluten free protein bars but there is gluten in a lot of things.

Workouts- for me, I like to weight train and also do cardio. Usually I feel pretty good but sometimes I slip up and I always regret it. I personally think most of the commercially available food out there is full of toxins. Also, I do a shot of ACV in the AM and that is pretty good as well for people with my issues.

I have a slowed down metabolism plus hormonal issues. Quick suggestions- eat a lot of meat (if possible, basically the "Caveman" diet.) Exercise as much as posssible. Reduce anything that causes inflammation.

    I'll add more later.

I just did some research... and I am not sure what kind of vegan you were... but healthy foods are dangerous sometimes!

Thank you everyone for replying. I'll reply to each post here in order. The picture linked is what I look like after eating, side view of me bloated. I do have belly fat and I just need to exercise the hell out of myself to burn the fat I think. But that is also where the thyroid stuff ruins me and makes me not want to move or do anything. It's really frustrating. The drive and ambition to workout are there though, just not the energy. I hope that makes sense.

    https://s5.postimg.org/g1k0pqs5j/20161227_150932.jpg

From the picture, you can see how I may look preggers when bloated, so I just avoid eating heavily before work.

DamnJolene, I haven't heard of the ketogenic diet, but I will surely look into it. I would have avoid eggs because they make me bloat. There are 12 flights of stairs in my building. I am going to go take advantage of that right after I finish replying, I promise. And yes, a lot of healthy foods are bad, at least for me. Kale and I recently had to break up because it made me look like a damn balloon after eating it. Mixed greens juices with kale are fine, but kale salads are no longer for me. The dancer who said that to me is older, early 50s. Doesn't go on stage due to her age. Tried to save face after I told her how rude it is to ask that to anyone by saying she hadn't seen me in a while. Then I told her she'd seen me three days prior to that and she shut right up. After talking to other girls about it, they said she's been a c*nt to everyone lately. Meh. My chest doesn't hurt, but I will look into the diabetes testing. That's actually a good point.

Gia2608, I have nodules, too! My largest is 2cm! I even named it "Ned the Nodule". Biopsies suck and I'm due for another soon. Hah, we're the same height, too. I weigh 126 now, I was 117-ish before I got sick at the beginning of December. I drink juiced turmeric every so often. I am going to look more into those on Amazon for sure. Unfortunately, Detroit isn't very friendly to vegans or vegetarians. There is a Whole Foods, and I know I might be making excuses, but stuff from there is SO expensive and adds up so quickly. O_O I also live in an extended stay hotel, so I have no kitchen, but I do have a hot plate, small oven, microwave, etc. I don't have any space for cutting or mixing foods though. I live above a bar and near a taco place that does have gluten free burritos. Unfortunately, the tortillas still have gluten, so not truly gluten free. I wish there was a dollar store version of Whole Foods. I still eat vegan when I can, but a lot of nuts and seeds make me bloat up, too. Someone suggested the bloat goes away the more I eat them because I'm not used to them... but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I definitely lack cardio in my life (except when on stage). I might try some HIIT workouts or something.

SnuffleUffleGrass, I really like chicken and burgers. I've tried to be vegan but I am a sucker for a good burger (with gluten filled buns probably). Maybe I should go for steak instead of burgers or something.

I haven't had my blood and TSH levels tested in a while, so I have an appt to see an endocrinologist next month. Unfortunately, they can't get me in sooner than when my thyroid medication will run out though. I am also on birth control to control endometriosis pain and was told it could cause some weight gain. FML.

Wow, you look great! A little bloat, but nothing out of the ordinary.

I wasn't expecting that to be honest lol!

She was obviously jealous of you. Not going to hate on her for her age... but there's a fine line between looking like Jennifer Lopez and looking like the average 50 year old.

Thanks. It doesn't seem to hurt my income at work. I subconsciously "suck it in" on stage and activate my trans abs when walking to make me look slimmer and taller. My belly fat mostly gets in the way when I'm splitting or stretching. But really, thank you. My bloating and weight issues are a big problem for me.

Have you checked out the endometriosis diets? I have it too and I literally feel your pain. I'm going to try out something called endovan that is a supplement a lot of women with endometriosis have had good results with but they're out of stock until next month so I can't say if it works or not yet. My only other option is surgery because I can't take anything because of my history of severe bipolar depression. But I've had some good results mostly following the diet. You're supposed to give up caffeine , alcohol, gluten, and red meat and a lot of people view it as an autoimmune disorder which responds well to a gluten free diet and I know personally that eating totally gluten free makes a huge difference for me with reducing belly bloat and endometriosis pain. I can't bring myself to give up caffeine though.

I have IBS, the things I've done: cut out dairy, (except low sugar yogurt) no fried food, cut down on protein. I like the Amy's microwave meals.
The thing that helps me w/bloating is to eat a grapefruit @ least once a week, preferably more & have a cup of coffee. It's very cleansing.
I still do have some bloating tho.

rareaspasia, I had no idea there were endometriosis diets!! The endometriosis pain only affects me for the first three days of my period. But it's bad. I've vomited, had ER trips. People think I look pregnant from IBS bloat, but the endometriosis bloat is ridiculous af! I had cramps so bad once that I couldn't walk or stand and needed a wheelchair at the ER. I honestly do think gluten and alcohol are my biggest problems for dietary intake.

whirlerz, have you looked into the FODMAP diet for IBS. I am trying my damnest to stay on it, but some of the no-no foods are just sooo good. Dude, the Amy's microwaveables are the shit! I'm adding grapefruit to my list for next time I go to Whole Foods.

    No, what's FODMAP?
I know what you mean about foods being good, I still love my chips n' other stuff.
I THINK WF's had Amy's on sale, Idk if the sale's still on. Her Pizzas even if you microwave them (they're supposed to be in convention oven) they're good.
For ice cream @ least there's SO Good brand, it's made from soy or rice, it tastes really good so there's that.

Here is an article explaining FODMAP: http://health.usnews.com/best-diet/low-fodmap-diet

Here is a list of things that are/are not okay and foods to avoid: http://www.ibsdiets.org/fodmap-diet/fodmap-food-list/

The latter link is what I try to model my diet off of, but again, some foods are just so yummy.

I believe the theory is if you stick to the low FODMAP diet, after sometime, you will cure yourself of IBS. But in order to do so, one needs to stay strict to the diet without cheating.

    I'll tell from my experience.
i have an hypoglycemia and some autoimmune disease which I have not identified yet..
I'm suffering from hypoglycemia for years and respond from doctors where like "just eat some sugar when you feel weak". I know many doctors personaly and many of them have diabetes, they undermine their own health and perhaps have no knowledge at all..For them your health is business.
But before I found out my condition I tried to fix myself with diet.
1)i tried that insane no less "banana diet". I felt so bad!
2)i tried fully raw diet but i did ate grilled chicken. it was not too bad, but I dont live somewhere around Caribbean or Westcoast, I live in harsh weather conditions. Raw veggies bloat me and make me feel cold! At winter veggies are not the same! Tomatoes are sour, peppers tasteless.
3)Keto diet. It is not easy to get into ketosis and I see how diet like that have some sense compare to those vegan diets. Your liver must be strong to process so much fat. For the first time in my life I got FAT as FUCK and yet cant lose that weight. I got fatter on 12 lbs. I no longer follow it. I know that asians(for example Mongolians) eat like that and they are known to be very healthy and maybe already a healthy person can do that.
I just meal prep everyday, i eat only rawmilk(full fat, unpastuarised) sourced by local farm, fermented foods,. I eat 5 times a day, it is a commitment but at this point i will do whatever i can for my body and health.

Recommendations for menstrual pain. Dont use tampons(they are toxic made of synthetic fiber, or gmo cotton), take food based vitamins(synergy brand for example), drink chamomile, magnesium will help with pain(natural calm brand 1 spoon and done with pain), essential oils(mint oil), natural yogurt or kefir(must be sugar free).
For bloating/ebs -eat fermented foods, do not walk without socks at home even, do not eat too much gasy vegges, no carbonated drinks,no alcohol, sugar, do not skip meals, take probiotics.
    Also look into GAPS diet.

That is so weird. I also have endometriosis and also PCOS; which I know is related to the thyroid issues but maybe the endometriosis is as well. However, my Mom had endometriosis (she had to have a hysterectomy when she was only like 3. She was skinny though. Whole foods is SUPER expensive. Here we have another option, Fresh Market; which they have in the SW US as well... and we are starting to get Earth Fare stores (literally THE best store I have ever shopped).

I also have one Safeway store- it is a West Coast company, but they have GREAT organic and Vegan stuff, for pretty decent pricing. For instance, I bought a bottle of Organics brand Pink grapefruit soda. I know I have no business drinking soda period but once in awhile I get a craving for soda and I would rather have something whose ingredient list is: Carbonated Water, Organic sugar, Organic pink grapefruit juice and ascorbic acid, than a coke. It was 2.99 for a 1 liter bottle. This store is about 25 mins from my house but I shop there pretty frequently for the quality and value of the food.

Def. up the turmeric- I suggest just taking it as the root or in powder form. As far as the bloating- it is clear from the photo it is stemming from your gut/intestines and not water weight.

I do not think any specific "diet" is going to be a magic fix for you. I think you need to get to the root of your issues and try to solve it from there. The thing Damn Jolene was saying about not walking barefoot is to prevent parasites.

Again, I am not a Dr. but I would get tested for parasites if I were you and see what you can do to regulate and stabilize.

Wild Oregano oil is great for killing parasites.

Keto w one golden rule: eat 30 minutes of waking.

High protein breakfast helps thyroid.lots of vegetables.

I avoid fruit when have gut problems. It helps.

Breakfast - eat a high protein breakfast thirty minutes within waking. Includino
Reducing grains, gluten, dairy will help this too.

    Other:
Ice your thyroid with an ice pack from the freezer for 10-20 minutes a day. It feels really soothing, its free and it helps bring down antibodies.

I've been on keto for a couple of months and the "un-bloating" is phenomenal. Just feels amazing and the hunger is at 0 almost all of the time.

I can suffer from bloating as well, it usually happens when I eat foods with wheat in and getting away from products that contain gluten can be difficult. I have thought of a colonic cleanse but I don't think I am brave enough to do that just yet! I have been recently been drinking this slim tea that reduces the bloating and I say it honestly works!! (until I know the brand of it I will post it here) my main concern is that I do suffer from constipation quite a lot. I am not drinking tons of water that much to be truthful but I have done in the past and it has made no difference to feeling bloated and ill.

I have stayed off alcohol since last week and by the end of this week it would of been already 2 weeks. I have slept much better and bought myself new bedding, I now have duck down pillows and keep to a routine so when I'm ready for bed I am actually tired.

I didn't read all the responses but I started doing spin classes and I love it. I hate doing cardio (the most I'll do on my own is like 15 mins on the stair master lol) so with having an instructor pushing you the whole time it's not bad at all. And I'm so sweaty afterward. I also do weights like squats, leg press, lunges, calf raises, leg extensions & whatever it's called when you kick your leg back with weights using the cable machine (donkey kicks..?).

Idk anything about your health issues but I think alternating weight training and spin classes can really help you lose some weight. I think you said your energy is down but I'll drink this blueberry green tea before I workout and it gives me a good energy boost. Or I'll drink a pre workout.

I've been fasting (flu) & I want to remind everybody to not go overboard with fasting as a weight loss tool. Your body needs nutrition to be healthy. just fyi.

What meds are you taking? I have Hashimoto's, too. They started me on levothyroxine and I didn't see much improvement. Natural desiccated thyroid has helped with my symptoms a lot. I take Armour thyroid now.

I had undiagnosed stomach problems. I switched to keto and after a month they were gone. Also the keto diet keeps me and my hubby fuller, so we eat less. I haven't been great about it, but he has been doing it for about 5 months and lost 20 lbs with no additional exercise. There are tons of great recipes on Pinterest. With any luck such a diet will help with more than just the bloating.
