Default Anyone ever tried dumpster diving behind major retailers & scored awesome stuff?

I've been watching alot of youtubes on it & i'm intrigued as hell to try it sometime. Apparently these retail stores are throwing away stuff that is still in great condition & I'm seeing people walking away with brand new Mac laptops, Iphones, high end makeup, clothes, etc. I know that as long as its a stand alone dumpster with no signs prohibiting scavenging or trespassing it's free reign I'm assuming. Anyone dabbled with this before?

P.s And yes I will be wearing gloves, pants & staying away from food dumpsters lol. Im doing it for the fun to see what all I can find honestly

No judgements or rude comments please!

    ~Cheers

I've seen people on YouTube doing it but I don't think I could only cause I have OCD.

But if you want to try it why not? People are wasteful and a lot of worthwhile useable stuff ends up in landfills. One mans (woman's) trash is someone else's treasure.

Meh, if I was that hard up I'd just shoplift lol. Dumpsters seem like a great place to catch something. And in some places it's illegal even if signs aren't posted.

    Well shoplifting is definitely illegal!

Dumpster diving from "trash" put out on the public street is legal. Just gotta be careful and make sure there are no signs saying otherwise or that the dumpster is not on private no trespass property. Check your local laws just to be safe.

I don't think the op is doing it cause she's that hard up but more because she's trying to find useful items, free of cost, that people are blindly throwing away. People throw away new stuff/stuff that can be used by someone else because it has no value to them, they don't want it, and too lazy to recycle or donate to a thrift store.

When I watched the YouTube videos some of that stuff was still in original packaging or wrapped in plastic. I watched a broad dumpster dive (and she was at least middle class) from Michael's craft store and found holiday decor items still in good condition.

Last night I found brand new still packaged Yankee Candles & they smell amazing Can't wait to burn them. And yes I'm doing it just for the random treasures I may stumble upon. I also found still packaged peppermint chocolate & gave it to my roommates bc I knew they'd enjoy it & wouldn't go to waste. Not a dam thing wrong with it lol. Besides it's better than sitting in a landfill rotting away. One woman even found a Mac book laptop brand new & worked perfectly Very inspiring those vids are!

^ Wow that's an awesome find! I'll be looking for clothing, high end makeup (that I can sanitize), candles, etc. It's insane what retailers throw out these days :/ Talk about wasteful!

I've noticed around where I live a lot of the major retailers are using trash compactors now, so unfortunately everything is crushed into a cube. However, the smaller retailers on the main street near my house still use city trash pick up which means you can sometimes find some good stuff. I've noticed that the local convenience store will toss old magazines into an unlocked recycling bin, for example. I'm mostly looking for things I can scrap though. I've managed to make a bit of side money by scavenging dead electronics as well as cutting the electrical cords off broken lamps or other household items that are in the garbage and then trading them in at a local junk yard for cash.

Ya I was over near a dept store & saw someone had strewn about some high end products packaging that may or may not have contained expensive shit & I was super bummed they beat me to it. It was near a compactor too so i dunno where or how the hell they got a hold of it from inside the compactor if they did without getting killed. I def don't touch the compactors bc those are dangerous as well as illegal to go thru.

Honestly most major Big Box stores either lock the dumpsters or call police if you're parked there too long.

Exactly! I heard something about if you touch anything that's outside the dumpster, you could get in trouble

I did dumpster diving a couple times on some twackstararifica My last try I found a sterling silver serving tray that retailed 100 ish. This was about 10 years ago when when the market wasn't so diluted. You could have thrown your dogs poop up for auction called it novelty dog crap and get 10 bidders. Nowadays it seems like many people are doing it, so hitting thrift stores and sought after dumpsters is more difficult.

All time favorite would have to be yard sales. I had thought I was making out like a bandit when I bought 10 glass joint roller trays from a fundraiser at a church 1 buck each.We get to a married couples residence selling some of their mom and dads things left behind at the house.a rummaging through and there it was! An autographed dark side of the moon LP record (Not mint condition but good enough to sell for mint on Ebay lol)! I'm sure one of you ladies has me outdone by racks, but for 2 dollars was an ok yard sale pull

Why the hell not? I've found some treasures people donate at thrift stores so I can only imagine what they throw away.

Everything's better when you don't have to pay for it.

She has found a mac laptop, two iphone5s, makeup, money, clarins unused facial cleanser set, tory burch sandals, purfumes and more! I cant believe how people can be so reckless with the things they buy! and not even donating things

I haven't tried it before but I want to! I've been selling stuff from thrift stores on eBay to help with the bills, but even the thrift stores close by can be expensive. Also want to grab stuff from the craigslist free section and flip it.

I can't wait to try Ulta diving LoL It works better if they are stand alone stores that don't share dumpsters with other retailers though bc you won't be diggign thru Pier1 or Dollar Tree hoping to find a $50 eyeshadow palette. Also best to go late at night after the place closes so no employee sees you. It's been raining too hardcore to go lately

I was at a yard sale in Beverly Hills and a Persian man walked from his house across the street and asked me what was going on.
He said that everyone should look in the dumpster behind his house, because his wife throws a way new dresses all the time. He said in the Persian culture, women don't like to be seen more than once, wearing the same thing. Hmmm.
The next month, My then husband and I opened a resale clothing and used merchandise boutique. This was pre eBay, and internet.
We would drive around on Saturday early morning and go to all the yard sales in bh.
Then early on Monday mornings, we'd drive through the neighborhoods where the unsold merchandise was put out for the trash pickup, AND go through dumpsters in bh.
Too bad reality TV wasn't around then, because it would make for a hell of a show.
Years later I lived in a very wealthy, mostly Persian building.
I never had to dumpster dive, because Persians couldn't be bothered to open the trash shoot on their floor.
They would just leave brand new clothes, , furniture right on the floor next to it. God bless em. Made it so easy for me. Lol!
eBay was where I sold mostly everything I found.
I still wear some of the clothes, and designer shoes on cam.
    Love dumpster diving.

Hahahah!!! True. My sister's Persian & Indian friends always looked at me with pity because I dressed like a punk rocker. They know how to live well & how to haggle.

Here's what I know about dumpster diving-

IF you can get into dumpsters near Malls & Big Box stores, you can find a lot of nice things that get thrown out (customer returns & last season's items.) SOME stores will cut cords on appliances (easy to fix) & some retail stores "soup" cosmetics (dump lotion on sealed makeup, you just wipe the lotion off.)

My advice, bring a driver, you wear latex gloves & have a stepstool. Also a "grabber" tool.

You're not supposed to name stores online (it clues the Corporate in to diver secrets) Pro-tip- some clerks will tell you when stock gets rotated/thrown out.
