    Search Companion Animals

Do any of you have experience with getting your pets classified as Companion Animals (for something like anxiety or depression) by a doctor in order to get approved for apartments that would otherwise decline you for having pets or try to charge your pet rent?

I have five cats and am trying to find ways to get out of a toxic living situation with all of my furbabies. Don't judge, please!

    Sorry, I gotta judge.

You're awesome for taking care of 5 cats and thinking about them even through a tough time. I have 4 myself so I know the struggle.

I don't have experience with getting them classified as companion animals though, sorry. Good luck!

That is a loooot of cats to certify...

You can do one of the online 'fakey' type deals... or you can go to a real psychiatrist. It depends how much the landlord wants to look into it though, some are aware of the people abusing the system & will scrutinize it heavily. You'd have better luck getting the certification to begin with if you have a regular doctor you go to as well.
TBH though, if someone came to me wanting to rent and said they had 5 ESA cats, I would immediately call bullshit.

I honestly think your best bet is to either A) go through a private landlord who won't have the corporate rules, or B) say you have 2, pay the pet rent, and just sneak the other ones. Move in after dark. Be nice to the neighbors in case they notice the extra ones somehow.
We've had 4 animals all the time in our apartments (including an extra dog, that we would literally walk past the office), and nothing has ever happened. Most staff don't really seem to give a shit, they have no personal stake in it.

I believe that it is illegal to even question or investigate a claim of needing companion animals due to disability (depending on the state)? I have heard that at least in CA and would look into it. I really want a dog and am going to consider this route next year. I know a girl in my building with a companion rabbit and might ask her what she did. Good luck with yours!

You can get the certification online. It is illegal to ask what disability a person has that requires them to have a companion animal. It is not illegal to question the legitimacy of the paperwork (that most likely would not be legit) or why she has 5 of them.

I agree with everything Selena said. Maybe you can find a house to rent instead of an apartment and you can have the cats there?

I have experience getting a letter for ONE animal. I have to agree with Selina......if I was a landlord, I would be immediately be questioning the legitimacy of anyone's paperwork if they tried submitting something that says that they have a disability that requires FIVE cats to treat. Is there maybe somewhere you can send some of them to stay for a bit so that you can just get out of the bad situation you're in now, and then look for a place that would allow you to bring them without needing a letter?

People have emotional support pigs and kangaroos so a few cats might not be out of the norm.

My vote is private landlord. Five cats seem less shocking than three pit bulls or ten Chihuahuas.

At worst you can have three cats when you move in & kennel two until you can sneak them in, then claim you are pet-sitting them.

I'm getting a letter for two of my cats (i won't have to pay pet rent or a pet deposit), am sneaking in a third cat, and my partner is keeping the two cats that prefer him.
