I know there are old threads but things change fast so felt like making a new one. Anybody gotten their massage therapist license and worked as one? Do you ever incorporate ASMR ?? I feel like it's something I would be good at and enjoy but is it enough money to live on or do you kind of have to do more erotic/adult message therapy to make a good living? Not that I'm opposed to that either but I'm guessing you don't need a license for the latter??
I know google says you can make a good living but I like to hear from actual people before spending time and money

I have been working as a licensed massage therapist for over a year now, and while I love the work and am so much more happier mentally than I was dancing, I did take a huge pay cut. Actually, I make 1/3 of what I made dancing. I still bring home tips every shift at least. It takes years of experience in the field to start making real money, having your own business and charging $100-150 an hour.
I would never get into body rubs, as I take my massage license seriously and would never want to lose it, I worked too hard for the opportunity. I'm not opposed to the industry itself, but I wouldn't bother going to massage school and getting accredited legally if you just want to give body rubs. Personally, I wanted out of the adult industry altogether and am willing to work hard to have a successful vanilla career. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Keep in mind a lot of health plans pay for massage therapy so in the right city a client base with the ability to pay for your services will exist.

I feel it does depend on location.

You can also offer therapeutic session by donation but there is *some* risk if you are in a state that closely watches licensing. I know many people who have done body work by donation for YEARS and they provide amazing work even without formal training. This kind of thing is only for those who have some risk tolerance.

Don't know about the professional aspects of it or the payscale, but it's a much needed service!

I never, ever buy lapdances, but have been known to pay a girl to rub my back on the VIP couch, numerous times. Had a girl do that about 6 weeks ago, and she cured a muscle knot issue I'd been having for months between a couple ribs. Money well spent!

Best of luck to you in this new venture.

I did it for one year. Was licensed. I personally got so burned out. I am a highly sensitive empath and feel like I just could not handle touching people all day long. I tried to learn about energetic boundaries and not "absorbing" other people's stuff but it still happened, and I always ended my day feeling drained and in pain from finger joints to neck to shoulders and back. After taxes I took home about $24 per hour plus tips working at a spa. I ended up with tendinitis and left after a year.

The career trajectory is very short for most licensed massage therapists. SOME can make a lifelong career, but the average is 4-5 years due to it being extremely hard on your body, even IF you are using excellent body mechanics. ALSO it is extremely unlikely you will be able to do 40 hours a week. It is a recipe for injury and burnout. Most do 20ish hours a week and maybe have a side gig.

That being said, if you think you would LOVE touching strangers all day and being all up in their energy field, have strong hands and fingers that aren't at all double-jointed, have decent overall physical stamina, and really feel a calling, go for it! You might look into learning Ashiatsu, where you give massage using mostly your feet, while holding onto bars on the ceiling. When I pay for a pro massage, I only get Ashiatsu now. It is AMAZING and they can do very deep tissue without straining themselves too much. If I didn't hate touching people all day, I would have learned Ashiatsu to save my massage career.

    Good luck!!

Oh also after I quit licensed massage, I tried body rubs for a bit. Money is significantly better of course, but I had the same issue with not wanting to touch people all day... let alone have them touch me! So that lasted a couple months before I bailed...

If you do body work you have to GET body work yourself, to stay healthy. You have to take excellent care of yourself. Now, if I give a back rub to my sweetie for more than 5-10 minutes, my tendinitis starts flaring up. So be careful.

Wow Adrienne, never knew about the drawbacks.

Always suspected there was more to the massages than just manipulation of skin, underlying fat & muscle. I do think there is healing power to some people's touch, and that some people have more of it. Aura?

I know I'm bumping my old thread. Hope that's allowed..
I just read it's illegal to ev n advertise full body massage without a license (can't even say "massage") so wouldn't it be safer WITH a license?

    Where/how do you advertise??

And has anybody worked for a massage parlor? And yes, that kind lol.

If you post ads offering massage when you're not licensed, you can get a misdemeanor massaging without a license and a prostitution charge. That happened to a friend's girlfriend. If you become a licensed massage therapist, it's best not to do happy ending type stuff, unless you want to potentially risk losing your license and having a prostitution charge. A friend of mine made that mistake and she lost not only her license but her own massage location that she had worked so hard for.

I've worked at a massage parlor before. The manager lady told us no funny business but it was obvious by the Google reviews of the place that either some ladies were doing gfe or there were some storyteller dudes leaving explicit details about different girls. On a day that I had a bad feeling, I didn't go in. The place ended up being raided and everyone there was arrested and charged with prostitution. I'd be cautious.

Ug can't believe law enforcement doesn't have better things to do than bust adults giving/getting handjobs of their own free will ..it's ridiculous. Unless of course those places are trafficking girls.

Yeah the massage schools are all like 10 grand (or so) and when I read about that career it's filled with people who say they don't make good money and all guys ever do is get creepy and ask for happy ending..seems like a catch 22

I can help with some questions. The main answer is that there is just this HUGE spectrum of what is offered .
I worked ( too long ! ) doing this in a lax state but admit I was EXTREMELY lucky about not running into trouble .

    ** DON'T QUOTE PLEASE **

The way I got started was just this crazy thing. I had taken a flight to a touristy area but at the time thought I was done with sex work ( dancing ) . Days later I met a girl at a hostel, went out for champagne, and then was at the parlor " filling in " for another girl that night!

*Really ..... most of them are NOT that sketchy.
Many have really great therapists who for whatever reason are not licensed ( like me being cheap about school and just risking it for years ) . Places often range from just a mix of licensed / unlicensed workers ( but less funny business ) to places where there are barely any licensed and posting ads in lingerie and it's very obvious from the ads what the place is ect.

There are pretty nice places too where girls are not licensed but they can do REALLY GOOD massage such as being licensed in their country / being a visitor to the U.S. There is a whole cycle of girls who come work similar to how as dancers we travel . Many come work similar to dancing in Guam ( they come for 3-4 months , return home, repeat if they want ).
Girls sometimes even live at the place ! I lived at the spa for a few weeks after hours to save money. It is such a crazy adventure looking back. I worked in a Thai shop where probably 20% were licensed and 80% unlicensed traveling girls. I was there so much I can speak a little Thai now.

I just thought my first one would be a funny story and a quick $50-$60 bucks but the hustle ending up supporting me for 2-3 years in a *very* expensive and sought after part of the country until I just got burnt out and hated it. I quit in a similar fashion to dancer burn out ...... just stopped going. When I moved states and really need money a couple years ago , I went back temporarily to get that " new girl " edge again and then I quit ( still hated it ! ).

Most places will charge $60-$80 but you give HALF to the house. So ... that's only $30-$40 you ( typically ) get for 50 minutes. You need to upsell whether it's just charm to get tipped well or bikini / topless upsell ect.

Also ..... ( for the risk tolerant only ) .... the real money is in Outcalls. You don't split your money with the house ( obviously ) but of course there is risk. The same screening should be done as carefully as a good escort would. Admittedly though ..... for a while I worked with very light screening only ( I was in a very unique area that had hotels all in a huge line and video cameras everywhere which added a sense of some safety ). My friend and I did duos for a long time ( lingerie mostly ) which worked well for us for awhile. We had a great safety system plus we were together so it added to the safety factor somewhat. Most of our customers seemed to really love the sessions and it worked well for awhile.

The main thing that made me quit was not creepiness .... it was :

    1. Time wasting at the start of the process ( asking too many questions without booking )
If you look into this more you'll find out not to talk too much via phone and text and why it's important to see only customers who understand that. There are plenty of other reasons but that was my main irritation that just made me stop placing ads altogether.

    2. I was in an area with a very active review scene that I found really really creepy.

** DONT QUOTE PLEASE ** MAY NEED TO REMOVE SOME LATER FOR DISCRETION .

Adrienne: I love your Ashiatsu idea. I still get massage but have " guilt " sometimes in my sessions because I know how exhausting they are to provide. I tip well of course but if I knew I could get deep work without exhausting the other person / keeping it more minimal impact to them, it is something to look into I think.
