Default Do you thinking designer brands are really worth buying?

Throughout the years, Ive accumulated designer bags and shoes from men. And I find that while I love the things I have...I don't love them that much. To me I don't feel like these items were really worth the money. I am starting to see them as a waste of money honestly, the materials are not as good as they should be for the $$(especially Gucci and Louis Vuitton).
Also tried designer makeup...it either made my skin breakout because it's over fragranced, or i found drugstore/less expensive items that work just as well(like for Chanel mascara, I LOVE it, but I found out $4.99 essence works exactly the same!!).

designer perfumes, I really love the independent, locally owned perfumeries in italy...and I've gotten more compliments on Victoria's Secret bombshell than any other perfume! lol does anyone else feel this way?

It depends on the item. A nice handbag - yes. It is a "status" thing. Maybe it is where I live in the US or what I do for my work that people notice these things.. I think spending 200.00 on a T-Shirt is foolish. I can get a T-shirt from Walmart for 2.88. A nice cashmere sweater or a really good watch that will last your life time and can even be passed on when you die... Ok. $500 pair of jeans when jean styles (cut, washes, leg-flare) etc. changes every few years. Makes no sense. I have only ever had one pair of designer jeans and I got them very, very cheap. I also personally do not wear jeans. I exclusively wear "designer" sunglasses except for one pair purchased for me as a gift but I wear sunglasses every single day and literally can not drive without them (learned to drive wearing sunglasses). I lose them all the time too. I have lost 2 pairs of D&G, a Tom Ford pair that I waited 2 years to buy (for them to be marked down), my best friend's $700 LV's and 2 pairs of Prada glasses in the past 5 years alone. It's fucked up because the retail value of the glasses was probably almost 2,000 and people in some countries have to live for the entire year on what I have been irresponsible with by buying and losing sunnies.

Yes on fragrance because it makes me feel put-together and polished and despite the fact I wear perfume about 3-4 times a week I have had the same 2 bottles (Versace Bright Crystal and a bottle Chanel a client bought me) that have lasted me nearly 2 years and have enough to keep me going quite awhile. I have some designer shoes (Fendi, Dior, D&G, Pucci, Armani and Prada) but again they are all (with the exception of the Puccis) pretty staple thing that will last a long time. Like, the Fendi's are white sandals, the Dior are navy heels that I can use for work or going out to a place they won't get destroyed. I want a pair of Gucci loafers (boys) because they are only about 2-300 and I can wear them with jeans or for work and I know they will last me about 10 years if I care for them.

I agree with you about materials not being worth it. I have vintage LV and Gucci bags and they materials used are top notch but my new Gucci is a lighter weight, cheaper Canvas and I am scared of getting it wet or stained because I don't think it will clean well. I agree about the make-up. Some MAC (which I know is not designer) products are not any better than their drug store rivals but I DO love their lipglass and the way their eye shadows go on ( I only have a few). I have worn foundation maybe 2 times in the past 4 years and what I use now is cheap but when I was younger and "needed" it, Christian Dior sells one that is the best thing I have ever used.

Also, some things are not worth it at all. I have a friend who was married to a very wealthy man who could have had any material thing she wanted and her Birkin is fake because spending 30,000+ on a bag is just plain stupid and a "fuck you money" braggery.

Anyway, my drawn out point is- it is easy to to dismiss all high end and designer products. I am not nearly as materialistic, vain or high maintenance as I was in my early 20's and I can actually afford this stuff a lot more now. It is wrong to worship these things or put yourself into debt or forgo savings to buy them. As I got closer to 30 than 20 I started to feel like my money was better spent on experiences than material things BUT I work my ass off, sometimes 14 hours a day without a break. It is nice to treat yourself once in awhile and alot of designer brands are made with better materials or craftsmanship and they can last longer, depending on the product. I can see how other people think it is wasteful though.

You mostly pay for the name unfortunately. You can find a better made bag looking at local designers in your area. I was going to buy a Micheal Kors watch and found out Fossil makes them... so instead of buying a name for $600-$700, I bought 4 that match through my entire wardrobe and they are made the same quality. lol

I buy a lot of designer brand clothing secondhand & I can tell it's usually much nicer than the cheapest clothing available.

A nice handbag is a good investment because cheap handbags tend to fall apart. If you get paid in cash plus have nice things like perfume & cell phones in your bag...you don't want them getting lost if your bag falls apart.

I feel it's not necessary to spend money on designer labels but it's nice to have a few nice things.

edit to add- sex workers can usually find a guy willing to gift designer goods. Most guys would rather give gifts than cash. It's more "personal."

Yes second hand definetly! There's so many websites/places to go for that now. There's also good leather bags out there that are not designer also

Yes and some of these bags are so ridiculously expensive you could invest in a nice piece of jewelry. I'm not knocking these brands I mean if you can truly afford it but I see a lot of women that I know cannot. also if you have a job where dressing for success matters, then that's another story but I don't think there is any job out there that you need to buy a $30,000 Hermes bag...there are books out there that tell women to invest in these bags....really?

I have Hermes Birkin bags - and honestly I do view them as a good investment - selling one of them literally got me out of a massive crunch when my finances had gone down hill after an accident.
Bags and shoes I only buy designer - however with clothes I mix it up a lot - some designer buys are def worth it - coats in particular ... my Moncler has lasted 4 years.

But to each their own - everyone has different feelings on this and different priorities when it comes to spending.

BTW I still use expensive bags I bought years ago- I don't care if they are not in style right at the moment.

When I was young & broke (pre-stripping) I would buy cheap handbags & wallets ...and look sad when they fell apart. IMO it's better to spend on something that lasts a decade than to be cheap & lose valuables because your handbag or wallet fell apart.

^^ I agree my friends mom has had the same three classic chanel purses for years - and they look timeless and gorgeous. A black, caramel color and a navy.

I really love designer clothes but I only buy them second hand. I found a D&G sweater for 15$ at a thrift store once. I found a gorgeous Diane Von Furstenberg dress a few months ago at a local consignment shop on sale for literally 10$ since they were going out of business and had marked everything down to 10$. Armani leather jacket on eBay, Miumiu slacks at a consignment store in Anchorage. There is literally so much quality lurking in the second hand world it's insane. I get ridiculously hyped in a thrift store with a large selection because I know, if you take the time to sift through the items and check the tags for 100% silk, Cashmere, virgin wool etc you can have a wardrobe that would have cost thousands full price for a fraction.

I remember when designer purses became REALLY popular, I was in middle school, and my friend (upper middle class parents) was constantly getting new purses. She was like 13 and had a collection of LV and D&B bags, that she admits now was stupid, but at the time she just wanted the labels. Then there was the VS trend, so all my 'popular' friends were wearing the stupid PINK sets that were like $100 for a hoodie & sweats. They just wanted to look 'cool' and 'mature' and "Oh this is from VS!"

Personally it's more about material & craftsmanship to me. Basically, anything I am hard on, I will buy higher end brands. They last a long time, but also higher end items can be fixed or professionally cleaned and made to last even longer.
I don't do super expensive brands, but still in the $100-$300 range. Jeans (Miss Me & True Religion), boots/shoes (specific western brands & anything with solidly made heels that won't destabilize, break down, and break my ankle), and purses (Coach or Michael Kors).

Flat shoes, shirts, dresses, panties/bras... Not worth it. I cap those purchases at $25. Fashion changes so much that by the time my $10 flats wear out, they are probably out of style or I was bored of them anyway. The exceptions would be VS or Fredericks, and I also have a dress from the Marilyn Monroe line at Macy's (which is of very thick high quality construction & still looks brand new 3 years later).

You can find some decent quality cheap brands though. The Black line of jeans at Rue 21 last a long time, make my tiny ass look good, and they're like $30.

May i ask how well they are put together? It kind of depends. If they are going to fall apart, then NO. If you are buying a name and that's it, then NO. If the thing's gonna still look cool ten years later, then YES.

A lot of big makeup/skincare brands also make drugstore brands, they don't really advertise it cause they want people buying the pricey stuff

Hilarious true story- where I live you'll see guys in Carhartt work clothing carrying around real Louis Vuitton gear & bags or holding their wive's Coach bags. It's all cool to me because I live here & realize it's worth the price to protect belongings from the elements. & If someone wants to spend their money that way, more power to them. Some people want a BMW, someone else wants a Coach bag. Cool.

Being that designer clothes are marketed to both men and women, no, I don't think designer brands are worth buying unless you're in a hi profile profession (i.e., pastor, celebrity,) where your image is key to helping you generate more business otherwise it's a waste of money and you will look out of place. Furthermore, many famous people that wear designer clothes and carry expensive handbags they get that stuff for FREE or they get paid to wear it like when 2pac partnered with Versace.

I didn't always think this way. As a teenager I wanted real Coogi sweaters, Sergio Tacchini track suits and anything Iceberg, but in my early 20s I had an epiphany and realized I was poor so why in the hell was I trying to buy $200 jeans just to fit in.

If you work hard and want to reward yourself with a nice designer item that's fine, but in this day and age your average American has been pushed to buy designer clothes or else you're some kind of failure in life. Basically what companies do is knock down your self esteem and then sell it back to you through overpriced clothing so you will feel good about yourself again.

I don't think young people understand this. Back in my day most people shopped at Kmart, Payless, the mall, or small mom and pop stores and that was fine. And if people wanted to step things up they got well made reasonably priced clothes from a department store like The Broadway or Gimbels and had it taylored to fit them properly.

Now?! It's designer clothes or bust. There is no middle ground anymore. Everyone is trying to keep up the image that they can afford red bottoms and designer this and that and it's part of the reason why most people are broke and have a negetive net worth even though they look well off.

As to what I wear exclusively is good ole Ben Davis workwear. They don't advertise so unless you know about SoCal subcultures you're not going to know about it so I tend to stand out and I'm always asked about my clothing that I pay no more then 50 bucks per item. Girls rock Ben Davis too, mostly cholas and rockabilly chicks.

    I'm jealous!! I wanna Birkin!!!

I have a Louis Vuitton ( my beloved bought it for me) and the strap on it needs to be either repaired or replaced. Maybe after I sell the screenplay and make the movie I will reward myself with a Birkin...or two...

I like designer shoes, handbags, or jeans. Anything else I go cheapo. Except my juicy track suits I still wear after work. I don't care if they are so 10 years ago. They are cozy and I love them for after work or if I'm "momming "around.

As an escort I've been told that you need to keep up the "high end" image to keep the wealthy clients coming back. What i didn't know was that men don't know the difference between labels, especially if it's not a big name like Chanel or Gucci. Clients don't care if you show up in Proenza Schouler or H&M as long as you look clean, classy, and presentable.

I do splurge on certain basics (like a Burberry trench coat, heels, and basic handbags). I try to get them secondhand if I can. Otherwise, I'm not too big on spending on clothes. You can get quality cashmere from Everlane and blazers and shirts from JCrew. Stuff like t shirts, sundresses, flats etc I honestly just get them from H&M or Zara.

I sometimes splurge on Agent Provocateur and Wolfords but they tend to last longer than cheaper lingerie. Even then I don't wear them all the time. If he's booking less than 2 hours Victoria's Secret will do just fine lol.

Dirty secret- thanks to stores like Ross, TJ Maxx & other outlets you can dress well without paying retail.

Also if you spend time in ski country or are a working rancher, you have to invest in quality clothing. Regional fashion exists for a reason.

I really like consignments stores like Plato's Closet. The last purchase I got there was new with tags (designer sandals.) Paid $7.

Me personally...I like the look and feel of designer jeans and if I find a pair that looks absolutely amazing on me, I dont mind spending the money. I'm a sucker for a great pair of jeans. I know I'm gonna wear them a lot and they'll last me a long time so its worth it to me. My favorite pair that I've had for almost 9 years cost me close to $250 (they were Frankie B) but I still wear them to this day and I've worn them countless times throughout the years. The style and fit is something that I cannot find with regular jean brands which makes it even more valuable to me. That being said, I don't only wear designer jeans, I have pairs from regular brands too. But I have a few designer pairs in my wardrobe and yes they are worth it to me.

I also prefer buying designer sunglasses and handbags because these are things that I wear everyday and the quality of them is important to me. I cannot wear cheap sunglasses, they don't protect my eyes as well or look as flattering on me. I have a few designer handbags and they have lasted me a long time and I love the durable quality. When it comes to clothes, I dont care as much. I can do just fine wearing cheaper clothes from stores like Forever 21 and Wet Seal.

Back in my day most people shopped at Kmart, Payless
I need to point out something important- in the 1970s & 80s the overall quality of department store clothing was better. (Think- cordeuroy pants, shirts with high thread count, flannel coats etc.) I've definitely noticed some stores have reduced the quality of garments (Old Navy, I'm looking at you.) Also factor in regional style differences- the way guys dressed in the Pacific Northwest for decades was radically different & more expensive than some guy breezing around looking like Jeff Spicoli the surfer in Southern CA. IE fashion costs could differ depending on the target group.

(Another cultural norm for the West Coast- you can get away with buying pants at Costco if you live in a house worth a million dollars. I mean, face it. People can talk trash about how you dress but they can't ignore that you're rich off of your ZIP code.)

Just some thoughts. In my current area you have to hit up Eddie Bauer or Cabela's for winterwear unless you want to freeze to death in clothing sold at Wal Mart. There is no in-between.
