Default 9-5 Job/Dancing on the Side

    Hi Ladies,

I've been lurking forever and I'd like some advice. I have a graduate degree and a normal 9-5 white-collar job. I make good money, support myself, and manage to put away some money into my savings every month. I dance (pole) for fun and I've been considering dancing on the side for some extra cash. I walked into a club a year ago and was hired on the spot (but chickened out). I'd like to try again but at a dive and see how it goes.

Anybody else have experience with this? Burnout? Is it hard to juggle? Am I insane?

    Thanks :)

I do this to expedite student loan repayment. Also have a grad degree and good white collar job. I can't say that either of us isn't insane though. I'm not a good one to ask about that

It's hard to juggle for me because I drive to another city to avoid being seen by co-workers. I and my boyfriend also have to lie to our friends about it because many of them are co-workers. It gets exhausting. I miss out on fun times and personal interests, and I don't know if I can keep it up.

Lately I've been feeling disenchanted with the corporate environment/desk job life and thinking about cutting loose, dancing, and freelancing in my field.

The extra money is wonderful though. Do you have earning goals, or what is your motivation for dancing? Just fun? Extra savings? I think if I didn't have my big loan bills I wouldn't have the gumption to keep doing it.

Ahhhh! I'd love to quit my job and dance, bartend, freelance, and pursue other things. Now isn't the time, but one day.

Desk jobs are rough, but the stability is nice.

To answer your question, I'd like to do it for fun and extra savings. I have some student loan debt to pay off and I want to save up for a down-payment for a condo.

Nice! Keep imagining that condo. I'm always thinking about what it will be like to be debt free.

Why did you chicken out before?

Lol because it was done completely on impulse - it was the first time I had ever stepped foot in a strip club and I had zero dance experience. I walked in with the whole deer-in-the-headlights look. I've since gone back a number of times with friends and talked with my dance teachers (strippers) about it. I feel more confident and so I figure starting out a divey place will be less intimidating (I hope).

I did this on and off for several years and never longer than 4-5 months at a time as it is exhausting.

If you don't have a pressing financial need I wouldn't do it. It's not worth risking your career over and I really wish I had been and to focus on building professional skills and having a real social life those years instead of being a constantly stressed out, exhausted zombie. I only realized after I stopped what a toll it took on me.

MAYBE do it if you can find a good club that lets you come and go as you want.

Yes, that is so important. I used to dance at my club in grad school so they know me and are willing to let me work infrequently and without a schedule. They usually make girls dance three nights, but since they knew I don't cause drama, make money, and tip everyone, they gave me a pass.

I think you should skip the dive. I started at a dive and moved on after like a month. It was good practice, but I coulda been making way more money during that month learning the ropes at a nicer club. You already have pole skills, so you're going to look like a pro on stage.

Do you have a night or a club in mind for your first night? Make a plan and tell us! Life is short

During most of my dancing career, I've had either school or another job and I've enjoyed the mix. For 3 years I worked almost full-time in my field (4-4.5 days a week) and danced once or twice a week. That got tiring and it eventually tapered down to once a week or once every other week. Since I've started working proper full-time (5 days a week), I've gone down to dancing once a month.

I've been doing this for a few years though, so when I go in, my regulars come in too and I know that I'll make at least $x and that amount is worth missing out on a day off, plus I have the flexibility of only working once a month because the club knows me. I honestly can't say I'd start dancing and do it every week otherwise, but I'm nearing the end of my dancing career so it's a very different perspective than you're going in with.

I work a Saturday day shift, but you could also work Friday and/or Saturday nights, though it'll take a much faster toll on your body if you're regularly switching between the day schedule of your 9-5 and the night schedule at the club.

I think your best bet is to find a club with flexible scheduling, so that way you can bail on a shift if you're really not up to it after a long work week, and with consistent earnings so you're not leaving with amounts that barely make it worthwhile for you to be working so much.

One other thing to bear in mind is that your dancer earnings may push you into a higher tax bracket, so they'll be taxed at a higher rate. It's still more money than you'd have otherwise, especially if you play around with deductions, but do the math to see if how much you actually get to keep after paying taxes is worth the effort. Of course, that's easier to do if you work a couple of shifts and can see your earning potential, but there's nothing wrong with trying it out and then deciding it's not worth it for you. You don't need to make a commitment to doing it on a regular basis before you even start.

Totally agree with the above poster. I've danced on and off at clubs. It's HARD work. Not just like spending hours at a studio dancing. Definitely your best bet is a club where you can come and go (no schedule). That way you can gauge your energy level on a day to day basis.

You might like it 1-4 nights a month but anymore would seem really exhausting if you already work full time.
