Default Botox in jaw muscle/teeth grinding

Thinking about getting this procedure. I have horrible teeth grinding and clamped jaws due to my medication use (SSRI antidepressants). My jaws feel like I am on molly all day. It starts to cause damage to my teeth and jaws now. So looking for a solution since quitting the meds is not an option. My enlarged jaw muscle is also changing my face shape to be more square now and I dont like it! So it is going to be both a medical as well as a cosmetic procedure

Anybody had experience with Botox injections in the jaw area/against teeth grinding? What was your experience? Did it help, did it hurt? I want to know everything

So I know this is an old post but I just got botox in my masseter muscles for my teeth grinding. It's only been two days so it hasn't really taken effect yet. I'll keep you posted, though.

I’ve also had that done and it’s not really a ‘procedure’ it’s just a few quick injections of Botox. I did it for the cosmetic aspect and was told I need to keep doing it every few months to really notice a difference.

I'm a lifetime jaw clencher that just discovered it like 6 months ago when a dentist pointed it out. It's caused sinus issues and headaches for me and I always thought I just got sinus infections a lot. Was hesitant to spend money on a night guard or do surgery/botox so looked into alternatives.

Went for acupuncture specifically for that and it improved probably 75% after one session... there was so much tension held in my jaw that I actually had blood pouring out when they removed the needles, which shocked them because that isn't supposed to happen. I did a session every week for about a month and since then have been going every two to four weeks. The jaw issue is basically gone and we've been working on stuff to help the anxiety that initially caused the clenching. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone.

^^^ that's really cool; I didn't know you could get acupuncture for jaw grinding. I like that it addresses the root cause of anxiety, too. I might look into this.

I did a lot of ex/molly back in my day and I still grind my teeth and clamp down on my jaw when I sleep. I do masseter botox injections to slim my face out. I've been doing them for about two years and haven't noticed any difference in the grinding or jaw clamping...

Have you noticed a difference in how your face looks? Like has it actually made it slimmer? That's why I started getting them but I've only done one round so far I'm going in for more soon.

Yes, it takes a lot of units of botox to slim out your jaw/cheeks and it also takes two weeks to take effect. I noticed it the first time and now do it about twice a year. I love it.

i got it done after the dermatolist pointed my face is square, and it finally made sense why my temples would hurt when i woke up. When i stress the grinding and jaw clenching got worse, so i just went for it and got botox. The problem is it cost almost 900 usd and it lasts 3-4 months. So its very expensive to keep up. I saw very subtle reduction in jaw but apparently u have to get botox multiple sessions over the year to notice reduction in jaw muscle. It honestly did reduce the grinding so much and i got used to have my massesteur muscles numb, i still clenched so i think i might have needed more botox but i hadnt gone to my follow up. Now the problem is, that its worn off and im back to the same problem now more salient then ever cuz i got used to not having it. Ir really sucks and makes sleeping hard. I am honestly going to try acupunture although aside from anidoctal evidence i cant find any evidence on it effective in getting rid of teeth grinding.

^ Jeez, that's alot . How many units? How much per unit? I think dermatologists cost more, go someplace else. It's not that difficult of a procedure. I've never paid more than $300 and that's also doing my 11's.

^^ can I ask what clinic you use. I go to NYC every few months so I can do it there. That's a great price if you're doing lots of units.

Update: it's been 12 days since I got Botox and I really don't see or feel any change.

I know it can take two weeks for the effects to set in, but this feels subtle to the point of invisibility.

To OP, just go to your dentist and get a custom fitted night guard. Will protect your teeth from further wear and tear. Should cost you less than $400.

Today I went to my botox doctor for a two-week follow up. We compared before and after pics, and my jaw is definitely slimmer! It's a subtle improvement, but I hadn't expected to see much change at all in such a short amount of time. The masseter muscles should continue to weaken over the next few months. I'm getting another round of botox in April.

    10/10, would botox again.

I used to grind my teeth at night and had severe issues with anxiety induced jaw clenching. I was on celexa which made me grind my teeth so bad I literally have chipped teeth (not visibly noticeable thank god). I've never heard of botox for it but what helped me was taking a magnesium supplement and eating more magnesium rich foods (spinach, kale). magnesium deficiency is a big cause of anxiety for some people!

I take meds that make me clench my jaw something awful. I looked into botox but was a little put off because I'd heard I'd need a lot of units and also that it can weaken your jaw and make it more vulnerable to fracture. I don't know how much more, I don't think it's a crazy significant risk, not tying to put anyone off or cause a panic. It just gave me pause.
I may still try it eventually, but I recently started taking magnesium supplements and I am amazed how much it has helped.
So for anyone primarily concerned with dealing with clenching rather than weakening the muscle for cosmetic reasons, I really recommend it!

My friend just had this done for teeth grinding, it only worked for 2 days and then she was back to grinding. You read that right; 2 days. Oh and she said to say that she does feel like it somehow made her face look a little better.
