Kayak is my favorite. I try out other sites from time to time, but they have yet to beat it.

skyscanner.com or momondo.com, with the browser set to "private" mode. Travel sites like to use cookies to see what flights you're searching for, and raise the price on you, so it's cheaper on private mode.
Also, scottscheapflights.com has a free mailing list that notifies you of cheap flights. I think there are a few websites like this.
expedia.com priceline.com. if you have chase credit card, you can use reward points on their travel website (100 points redeem 1.25 dollars value).
and google gives you good price too, some international flights, some of you may not know.

I like being alone, I just don't like being lonely.
I like to use Cheapoair.com for my flights

All the above are great. I'd like to add AirFairWatchDog, the app Hopper, and talking directly to the airline to see if they will match prices you find elsewhere.

Some airlines don't show up on the other websites, except their own. Southwest Airlines is very cheap within the US and Central America, but, you have to buy tickets at least 21 days in advance to get the cheapest fare. If you want to go to Europe, WOW airlines is very cheap, but it only departs from selected large cities.
If you live near a port city, another option may be cruises. Cruises can be very cheap, specially when you consider the price includes lodging and food.
Another option to consider is a road drip. If you gather a few friends, you can share costs and driving. It is easy to overlook that you may have amazing cities, national parks or monuments just a few hours away.
Also, if you want to go to Europe, but, the cost is too high, consider other reasonable substitutes - e.g., either Quebec, Canada or Buenos Aires, Argentina.

I have extensively compared travel websites (by checking the same flights on different search engines w/ my browser set to private) and Skyscanner is ALWAYS the cheapest. Expedia, priceline, and esp kayak have always been the most expensive in my experience.
The only exception is with Southwest. You have to look directly on their website for the cheapest fares. Southwest is also my favorite airline because you can check 2 bags for free and you can change your flight completely for FREE. If you have to cancel a flight you can keep the value of the ticket and use it on anther plane ticket within a year or so. Their planes also have the most legroom in my experience.
I will NEVER buy a United flight again. their seats keep getting smaller and smaller and the newer planes have tv screens that play ads the entire flight unless you pay for their movie service. FUCK THAT. Advertising pisses me off, if I'm forced to watch ads for 4 hours my flight should be free motherfuckers. It also costs an arm and a leg to check a bag or change your flight. They're the worst company.
I also second Scotts Cheap Flights for international fares, although its not a travel search engine, its a mailing list that tells you about international fares that are EXTREMELY cheap, like $300 round trip to Europe cheap (normally 1000+).
Do your future self a favor and work hard now.

Important- clear the cookies/cache from your computer when you search for fares. It prevents other sites from knowing what you're doing & adjusting your data.
Also be warned some of the bargain basement airlines have old planes. (Allegant, for one.)
& On topic the smartest use of credit card rewards is airline miles. Some people pretty much fly for free this way.

Thank you so much for all those great websites!
I was able to find a flight to Asia in the beginning of July with a retun at the end of August for $1600 CAD on FlightHub.com. I was able to save $700 because I couldn't find anything cheaper than $2275 during this busy season. I'm very happy because the cheapest flights were 30-40 hours but this one is 27 hours, most of the cheap flights were with United Airlines and I heard so many horrible reviews I'd rather pay $1600 instead of $1500 to fly with Air Canada. I hope FlightHub.com is not a scam, the flights were sold at $2275 on Air Canada's website. Will contact Air Canada just to make sure and update later tonight.

I tend to book where I can get cash back on my purchases.

To give a quick update, I ended up booking with FlightHub.com, they're totally leggit and I was able to save $700. The cheapest flights on airlines websites was $2300 but I was able to book for $1600! Could have been cheaper at $1500 with United Airlines but would have took 45 hours instead of 35 to arrive at my destination and the reviews were so bad. I chose Asiana Airlines, it was my first time flying with them and I was skeptical at first because I only flew with Air Canada before and let me say I'm never going to Asia taking Air Canada ever again!
Always heard Korean airlines were the best but it was my first time with them and I never saw a plane so pretty inside! Koreans are known for being very meticulous and perfectionist, everything matched from the inside of the airplane colors to the pretty flight attendants uniforms to the blanket, sandals, pillow and eye mask they gave us! Customer service was impeccable, they had disposable hairbrush, toothbrush, mouthwash, long mirror in the bathroom and even skin toner since Koreans take such good care of their skin! Best airplane food served so far, I had filet mignon for dinner, it was the free dinner.... ! They served three good dinners during the 13-hour flight. Would totally recommend!!
