    Default Moving to NYC

Looks like I'll be moving after all to NYC. Any suggestions regarding good areas to live around the city that would be convenient to midtown Manhattan where I presume most $$$ clubs are? I'm looking at Harlem, Bushwick or Astoria..any suggestions? What kind of a budget is reasonable? Would landlords/brokers accept your application if you are a dancer? Any suggestions about clubs with a flexible schedule and decent $ would be much appreciated as well.

Astoria FTW. Harlem is pretty rad too. But I still think Queens is cheaper, and nicer, and generally has the best food. Yassss Queens. Also it provides a straight shot to Manhattan via subway and (I think) the new ferries. Bushwick is fun and trendy/hipster-y. It also tends to be on the cheaper side for rent, but it is inconvenient in terms of transportation. I had a semi-difficult time finding a room, but I think it ultimately comes down to whether or not you have good credit or a guarantor. I don't have either of those, so I had to hit up the Craigslist. Also, I only cam at this point, and I think it is possible that people might be weirder about having a camgal as a potential roommate. But in the end I found a pretty legit place to live, even with the deck stacked against me. I am just beginning to explore the realm of dancing IRL. So, unfortunately, I am of no help when it comes to clubs. But I hope to know more soon! Best of luck!

So Queens or Harlem? Based on my budget, I'm looking at Harlem too. A friend wrote to me today concerned that the area is overly ethnic and that I might have issues given the racial tensions in the US right now. I hope he's wrong. I had all my documents in order here in La as far as proof of income, even ok credit but no one would rent to me because I was forthcoming about my job as a dancer. Bushwick seems really like my style and level of comfort but the transportation issue is a bit concerning, given that I plan on working in midtown and would need to be there 3-5x/week due to work of one form or another.

My commute to midtown is about 35 minutes on an average day, an hour on the worst days, and it goes by quick. I don't live in bushwick proper, but my neighborhood butts right up against it. Most of the clubs in midtown Manhattan are in herald square or Times Square, if you can get a place off the D or the Q, that's the best, because they run express even late at night. My favorite.

I think that... unless you are racist, you should be fine. Also, you might have a problem transitioning to NYC in general if you come from sheltered suburbia. The 3 places you are considering are all appealing, but for totally different reasons. Bushwick is definitely the quintessential Brooklyn experience. But don't rule out the surrounding areas. Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights are pretty decent places too. I think that the best way to make a decision is if you are able to visit for a couple days and get a feel for the different neighborhoods. Your second concern, about being forthright with your employment situation, is probably where you will have more trouble. That is where I get the most judgement. It might be different for you though. I work (cam) from home and it is possible that people are more put-off by having a camgal roommate. Soooo one idea is to describe yourself as a "freelance creative professional". Personally, it took some considerable hunting to find renters who were satisfied with a lack of "on the books" income documentation. If you don't have a guarantor or good (700ish) credit then you will probably have to consider options outside of a standard leasing agreement anyway. I have heard of people offering to pay several months up front. Money always talks.
