    Thumbs up more tax questions!

hi everyone! this is my first post on SW(:
so i've been scouring the forum trying to get as much info as possible on all of this tax business but i still have some questions! (btw s/o to all of you for being so patient and answering them in past posts!)
    first, some background info:
    -i'll be a dependent in 2017
-i'm a full time student (I think this affects taxes?)
-i don't plan to dance a lot so don't expect to make a lot
    -i'll have other "vanilla" jobs

so i guess my question is... is it worth me filing as a dancer if i'm not planning to make any big ticket purchases like rent or tuition? from what i can tell you just need to have established credit (which i have) and have tax returns (have these too) in order to apply for things like grad school loans or any big purchases i might want to make a few years in the future.

the reason im considering not filing as a dancer is because I'd like to be an LCSW (social work) and work with foster care one day and they're pretty intense about background checks. it sucks that being a dancer might affect that but im afraid to risk it! however, i also love dancing so i'd rather not have to quit!

does anyone have any advice on how i should file? thanks so much!!!

edit: the only form i filled out in my club was a w9 which i believe they told me theyd only use if i made more than 600 in funny money? does that sound right to y'all?

All I can say is lying on a tax return will cost you not just a job, but possibly your freedom. I will have no part in any sort of tax fraud, including misrepresenting income or deductions. That said, you should fully report your income from whatever source derived. If you have 1099 income or even unreported income from dancing that should go on a schedule C attached to your income tax return. There is no employment classification for "dancer." The classification is 711510 - independent artists, writers and performers. That is all that will appear on your tax transcript. A document that will not be shared with anyone who doesn't bring a subpoena or a release signed by you, to the IRS.

Frankly, anyone dumb enough to try and cheat on their taxes deserves a trip to the federal pen.

I know school teachers and pediatric nurses that were dancers without issue. There is no magic "permanent record" for adult work that is stored in some mystical central repository. Background checks for nearly all jobs that even have one are limited to basic criminal records check and social services/domestic abuse allegations. Maybe sometimes a credit check that also won't show anything (if you're getting bonded or working with money). If you need an actual security clearance, just tell the truth and they won't do much more than shrug their shoulders and grunt. Limit your own social media footprint so a cursory check by a lazy HR won't find anything and you should be just fine.

As for filing taxes...just do it and do it properly. There are soooo many consequences of not doing so that can bite you down the road. Credit for mortgage or a car, application for student or public assistance, trying to file legit when you do start making money in a real job (the IRS doesn't like gaps in your filing records), etc. Yes you can get around not having a good financial history, but you'll pay hundreds or thousands more in interest using shadier sources over your lifetime.

Even if you don't owe that much an audit simply sucks, especially when they will guess for you in 5 years what you owe and you didn't file anything to prove otherwise. By not filing, you're living life waiting for the other shoe to drop if you're smart, or waiting to get hit by a mac truck if you're not.

I have a dancer friend who refuses to work in a certain club only because they issue 1099 form, although club is good. Her reasoning is that it leave paper trace and destroy her future career. My argument -paying your taxes will always work for you and not against you. Majority of jobs will only check your criminal background. And when it comes to some imaginative super security job -they have means to check even your google search and social media, not just tax reports.

I was told by an accountant not to bother. I mean if it’s a short term gig and you are young (college age) you can get away with it as long as there is no paper trail, but you are the only one that has to deal with the consequences.

I’d seriously like to punch accountant in face for giving me such shitty advice. I was JUST a stripper so he told me not to bother. I probably would have saved and invested if I treated it like a business, but of course he thought that was beyond my capacity.

I think when you treat stripping like a business you make more money, so I’d file.

Honestly I’ve heard that they only do criminal checks and don’t really check tax history, but I honestly don’t know how it plays out. I think most the trouble comes from dancing while being a professional, not necessarily before.
