I love Lori's character. Honestly even in that era her story doesn't seem so strange. She reminds me of a lot of my "wild child" friends...lol

Yes, for sure that's what it reminded me of.
While watching season 2, I noticed a familiar face. A guy ( actor) who used to frequent a massage parlor I worked in 10 years ago in LA. Hmm
I messaged him on social media, and we exchanged numbers.
When we spoke,
I told him that I was camming now. After asking a million questions about it, he said that he wanted to do a show. I suggested Skype. He said just the sound of my voice got him so hard. Okay.
We set it up for later that night, but when I quoted the price, he ghosted me!
Stupid, cheap asshole!
*Oh, but he did mention that the stories in the Deuce were real, but they changed the names to protect people.
Pretty cool.

There was actually a ton of documentation about the adult industry in the 1960s-70s in the States.
Fun fact- the Mafia WAS a benevolent umbrella for adult industry activity b/c they viewed it as a "victimless" activity. ("The Godfather" movie series kind of touches on this in side plots.)
Another amusing bit of history- a LOT of men in government in the US were closet homosexuals or cross dressers (Edgar J Hoover, for one.) For a long time laws on the books kept sex "at home and in the dark." (&....Sometimes in the closet, too.)
Do you guys think that mafia still has a major presence in adult entertainment?

I FUCKING LOVE this show!!! My only complaint: They jumped from ending Season One in 1972, moving into 1977.
Seems inconsequential, but the culture of the early 70s was very different from disco-era late 70s. I feel that there was so much culturally that was jumped over, you know?
And we already know that Lori's leaving CC, and she should have stayed in L.A. Was I the only one who was happy for her experiencing that hotel room, independence, dignified treatment? When she stood on the balcony looking at the Hollywood sign, it's like she was starting to see her future...out of NYC, away from CC. Lori's meant for bigger and better things, but she came to New York looking for bigger and better things.
The pimp who wants to be a porn actor (Darlene's pimp): He's smart for seeing the writing on the wall, that there's really no use for pimps anymore. And I love that Candy's giving him a chance, because the industry is notoriously racist.

I'm not surprised. Darlene isn't earning enough to live on her own. Plus, these pimps have mind control over the girls. Darlene hasn't even told her pimp that she snuck around and went to night school, earning her G.E.D.
Now, I'm surprised that Lori went back to New York, but that shows the level of mind control. Mark my words, she'll leave him, sooner than later.

I just love Lori so much. She's honestly ahead of her time (the Midwestern wholesome girl who just needs direction/culture to succeed.)

My favorite character is Eileen, the hooker/actor turned filmmaker. The only thing that isn’t clear to me is why she is a street hooker. Her mom looks after her son, so she could have lived there until on her feet financially? I guess I missed something in the first season

Eileen hates her dad for something he did to her brother. She avoids being around him to "keep the peace."
Also honestly in NYC in that era massage parlors, brothels in city apartments and "streetwalkers" were an everyday thing. The show makes it clear Eileen has long term plans for her life, even if she is taking risky shortcuts to get there.
So.... have loved this show. Am currently working through the last season, and i must say... I was really happy with how empowered the sex workers were in the first two seasons and I’m disheartened that this last season has become a guilt laden trope filled rehash of how porn is evil and life destroying and is just a product of a man’s world that will always keep women down even after they leave porn IF they could be one of the lucky lotto winning superwomen to claw their way out. Thanks HBO. I realize this is a period drama but it’s fucking 2019 and attitudes and opinions haven’t changed much since then. Way to reinforce the bullshit.
