    Default Hurricane Harvey

Anyone else in the middle of this? It hasn't started yet and I really have no idea what to expect. I'm technically in the "danger zone" but not the worst of it. People here in my city don't seem to be freaking out too bad, but I keep getting texts from my family/friends back home going crazy telling me to evacuate! They're from LA/OC so they're not used to much rain or snow or anything like that, and I feel like they might be over-reacting, referring to it as "another Katrina".

I'm going to try and work at the club tonight. Not expecting much though. I wonder if people will still go out tomorrow for the big fight? I know many reserved tables already..

There is at least one well known member here who is in south central Texas. I hope she will be OK and can keep us updated.

The problem with Austin is it is mostly vertical. When water runs off it goes at terrific speed. Stay on top of a hill.

Holy Mackerel! I hope you rethink that. It's a Cat 4 as of now and it's only going to get worse. The system will SIT on your area and dump up to 50 inches.

In this information age, there's no reason not to stay on top of the latest tropical storm/hurricane developments. These 2 sites may be useful:

    www.nhc.noaa.gov www.weather.com

Once there, just click on the Hurricane Harvey related links. Best wishes to those in the path of the storm.

Err on the side of caution (especially if you can financially afford to do so) because last thing you want is to underestimate a natural disaster then be stuck having to ride that shit out, no power, destruction, living like a war zone in the aftermath ....... or something worse.

I am in Austin. We are supposed to get a lot of rain starting tonight into Sunday or Monday and it will likely flood (as it always does in Austin). I am following the university police on facebook, because they seem to be making the most updates about Harvey, as UT is critically concerned about reporting on safety issues immediately for the sake of privileged students' parents.

Right. I haven't been following it and just noticed it. Is it past the point of evacuating?

Remember many more people are killed by storm flooding than by wind. Most people who die by flooding are either in the storm surge area right along the coast or drive into water later on. So if you are in a storm surge area, evacuate. Otherwise stay put indooors and don't drive into water.

    Exclamation Re: Hurricane Harvey

Speaking of flooding...apparently it displaces alligators, and some will find themselves on your porch. Enjoy your new friend.

People evacuate TO Austin. The main problem there is fast moving water in the low areas..

Yes, I agree. I take it very seriously, as my first post indicated. The alligator story was on various news sites. It was meant to explain their arrival so that if someone did see one, they wouldn't be as frightened as they might otherwise be. If my "new friend" (an alligator) comment was seen as in poor taste, I apologize. Sometimes my attempts at levity have mixed results.
