    Default Money Counts

Is it possible to calibrate a cash-counting machine at a bank such that it short-changes the customers? The reason I ask is that twice now, when I went in to deposit my cash, the values I've come up with counting the cash on my own differ from what is counted by the machine. Not sure if I'm retarded or whether I should go find a different bank, to be sure, I'm not being screwed over. The second time, the teller turned the cash-counting machine to face me while it counted and the values were definitely different from what I got at home. He ran it through the machine twice in front of me.

The machine is probably correct. Maybe your roommate is stealing from you?

Zero, it can't hurt to try a different bank I suppose, but I agree with another poster who said that the machine is probably accurate. Banks are just about the most controlled and regulated entities in the country and there is no way that the bank is screwing around with skimming cash. That's insta-jail for the people involved and serious fines/potential closure imposed by a regulator, which that regulator can do to the bank without any due process (especially a smaller bank). Banks have too many ways to legally screw customers (high interest loans, credit cards, bank fees, etc.) to risk skimming a few bucks off of cash deposits.

Now could a rogue teller try to skim money? It's possible, but the tellers are highly monitored and a teller wouldn't have access to calibration settings anyway - all of that is strictly controlled at senior levels.

Again, anything is possible, but it is highly unlikely that the error is occurring at the bank. A more likely explanation is that your counts were off. Or if money is actually missing, it is far more likely that someone is skimming out of your stash before you go to the bank.

    Good luck!

    2. you can actually get flagged for criminal activity at some banks

go to different blocks to deposit cash and various different atm machine
Can you elaborate on this? If you tell the teller you're a stripper would they still flag you? And why would you gonto different banks to deposit different amounts ? Wouldn't it be more sketchy if you did it that way as opposed to just going to one bank?

OP- you can always ask for your money back after they count it. That happened to me the first time and I leftthe bank like a dumbass. The next time around they said they had counted more money than what I originally said so I recounted it again. Anyways.. if the amount you counted doesn't match the amount the bank teller told you, just ask for it bqck to re count it. What I do at home is count my money and put them piles of hundreds and re count it again. I'm also comsidering buying my personal counter because I fucking suck at counting it. I only strip one or two nights a week so I'm not sure if spending ~$300 for a counter is worth it, but will sure make life easier. Keep us posted!

Generally they are correct- as pp noted it's a huge risk to try and skim cash. The few times i have had a different total when i counted it the teller then hand counted it in front of me to double check. I rarely make errors but once in a while you count it tired and jump from 7 to 9 or something.

If missing money is common i would check for other ways it might be missing- roommate, boyfriend, bills sticking in the bottom of your drawer, whatever.

I generally make frequent trips to the bank with smaller amounts wjen traveling out of town but if i make a large deposit at home i'll use a branch that has a lot of business activity so your large cash deposits aren't unusual, the people in line around you might have more. Not so muxh for tax purposes flagging (if you're doing your taxes properly this is an annoyance but not a disaster) but more so as Nadia suggested, people notice you carrying a lot of cash. If i bring in 5k but the restaurant owner ij front of me is bringing $25k i'm a less worthwhile "mark" as she said.

Yea so I'm going to splurge on a money counter. I just deposited money in the bank and the guy told me I had 400 less than what I originally thought I had. I swear I counted my money carefully this time. I usually stash the cash and not go to the bank. But it's starting to become too much of a risk keeping it at home. Does anyone have a counter?

how often do you go? i try to go every morning after i work so there's no confusion and it doesn't pile up. like someone else said, smaller amounts are unlikely to get errors.

    but $400? that's very strange

What's wrong with credit unions? They are way better than banks IME. I've had a credit union for years, and I couldn't be happier with it. They've never given me any issues ever. On the other hand, I've had money stolen from me when I deposited cash at an ATM at my Wells Fargo bank. I deposited a certain amount, but when I checked my account balance later on, it stated that I deposited $100 less than I actually did. Someone at that bank had taken $100 from the envelope and changed the deposit amount. I was furious, but I could never prove it. I always triple check when counting cash too. I'm OCD about counting cash.

OP, I'm sorry this happened to you. Something definitely seems off. How do you count cash? Like for example, say you have forty $20 bills, do you count out 40 bills, then use a calculator to figure 40 x 20= 800? Or do you add up each amount as you count each bill, like: 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, etc.? Because counting it using the first method and using a calculator to add it up might be a more accurate way and less prone to error.

The exact thing you mentioned happening @ the bank, happened to me @ credit union, I also had it for years.
I was warned about it, & didn't listen.
Obviously, your experience varied, glad it worked for you but I still stand by what I say.

Back on topic: I'm now going to check out how much those machines cost
I've looked into having a safe, I don't think I'd get a counter though, but good luck OP

ok, but in your original post you said that is not the reason why they are bad. Why else are credit unions bad?

    Sorry for threadjack.

IMO someone is stealing from you and chances are it's not the bank teller! Have you tried recounting everything you're going to deposit like immediately before you hit the bank?

No there is a discrepancy between what I count right before going to the bank and after, so not the roommates for sure. Maybe I'm just bad at counting.

Update: I went on groupon and bought a $60 money counting machine and it was finally delivered to my house today. Woohoo! The sucky thing is it can't distinguish different bills apart like a five dollar bill or a twenty dollar bill. So fucking annoying... but it does help with counting pesky ones. I just seperate the bills according to the denomination and multiply the number of bills the machine counted by however much the denomination is. I've counted all of my money and seperated and rubber banded it. I feel so stress free! Not a bad investment for girls here who work full time. I only do two days a week and It's a lot to sit down and count it.

Omg yes girl!! Groupon has everythingggg. I swear by it. I got my home stripper pole for $60 online too. Theres different options for machines tho. I suggest you read the fine print to make sure you get one that fits your needs. Just don't buy stripper outfits off groupon. They suck.

Ive never had that happen but then again I'm very meticulous about how i sort my money. I face everything and when I'm counting it out i lay it out in $100 stacks on my bed so theres no miscounting. I'll ruberband sets of 1k when i go to the teller to make it very organized for them to count. My money's actually only ever been over by a couple dollars, never under.
