    Default Hurricane Irma

    Florida is already in a state of panic as this massive storm is four days away from the southern coast.

    I am in northeast Florida and we are already seeing the following...

    • Stores are sold out of water, batteries, generators and other emergency essentials;
    • A state of emergency has already been declared for the entire state;
    • Schools closures have already been announced for Friday, presumably to give people ample time to evacuate the state; and
    • Hotels are sold out for Sunday and Monday all over more inland areas of Georgia, including the entire city of Atlanta. Before long, hotels several hundred miles in every direction outside of Florida are likely to be sold out as Floridians are already starting to flee the state - even those in my area, which isn't supposed to be seriously impacted until Monday.

    ...and it is only Wednesday.

    This one is supposed to be real bad. If it hits FL directly it is expected to cause massive damage and extended power outages. I and my family are leaving on Friday to enjoy the mountains of TN for a few days.

    To anyone in its path, good luck and let's hope that it swings north a lot sooner than expected.

    My husband just flew back north from Miami. His airfare was fucking ridiculous. I'm glad he made it out but because of the cost he almost stayed to ride it out during the storm. His company plans to open their doors for employees and family members because it's in a strong structure plus a parking deck for vehicles. I can't wait to move back down there but I would not want to go through that crap. I remember Hurricane Andrew and it's aftermath.

    I am in Key West.

    Up until this morning, every projection I saw had Irma right on top of this tiny island as of sunday morning, and it's only 18 feet above Sea Level at the HIGHEST elevation. It was extremely scary. There is no point having a nice car in Key West, so I don't. Escape would have been difficult, expensive, and then trying to get back to clean up very hard also.

    But then today the European models of the path started showing a dramatic turn to the north, and Irma hitting Miami or even further up the coast.

    So I am staying. I have 2 loaves of bread, 7 cans of tuna, two cans of chili, 2 cans of chicken noodle soup, 2 'ready to eat' chicken & rice dinners (all of which will taste like shit cold lol), and most important, a whole case of bottled water.

    I am on the highest part of the island (the whopping 18 foot 'hill'), in a 3rd floor loft apartment in a 1900 era house, which has withstood a direct hit from a Category 5 hurricane in 1935 (though to what extent it was damaged, and if anyone was still here at the time, I don't know). Though there's been some termite damage since then (they are endemic in Key West), and if an associated tornado hits, the roof is gone & me with it.

    If it DOESN'T turn north saturday, it's been nice knowing you all.

    And Angel, the poor little cat that lives in the fence outside my club, I am very worried about her.

    I might even try to grab her & take her in my apt, but she is part feral & never been picked up or put in a cage--could be tricky. Plus the manager of the house/apts is also staying, and if she sees me with a cat, I'm evicted. Instantly.

    The cats that live around the club complex have many hidey spots and should come through OK, if Irma misses Key West. But she's scared of all the other cats (which is why she lives in the fence poor thing).

    Good Luck, Djoser. I'm in Houston, and I made it through Hurricane Harvey while I was right on the 50 yard line.

    Of course, I live in a Hi-Rise, and Harvey was a rain event and not a wind event.

    If the predicted course of Irma is a direct hit on the Keys, and it stays a Cat 5, you might want to at least, consider evacuating.

    ^I agree. I think everyone in the Keys needs to evacuate now. The hurricane is fucking huge. It is wider than the entire state of Florida.

    I can't for the life of me figure out why nobody wants to evacuate before they declare it mandatory..SMH.
    Poor Barbuda, 90% of the island is decimated and the 1600 people who live there are homeless.
    PR has no power and probably wont have power for 4-6 months.

    Putting up my shutters in Palm Beach area this morning...all stocked up with water, food and beer. Djoser..even without the eye coming ashore in Key West, I would consider leaving today if at all,possible for you. The storm is large enough to still have a major impact on lower keys....

    Yeah, Djoser, I normally would say grab on to something and ride it out just for the adventure but...I did that shit last year and regret it so... I'd say take a little trip to the mainland instead. I still have video of a concrete wall of my hotel on the TOP FLOOR crumbling in the midst of the storm, railings and rain gutters, fences, whole five foot high sand dunes ripped off or disintegrating. I saw a 3 ft storm surge that was unnerving, 2 weeks of flooding in town and weeks of epic flooding through the surrounding 100-200 miles! There were fires that could not be put out because the flooding was too severe. Power lines get ripped and blow.. Electric and water is a no go. Debris flew through the air and smashed the windows at the two rooms next to mine. It was about 3 am and pure luck that it didn't hit my wall sized window.

    I sooo don't recommend it. I've already planned to be out of town for days until it passes. Oh and you never know where it's going to hit until the last minute. It was supposed to hit Jacksonville and wound up hitting the northern half of South Carolina. That's a thousand mile difference. You just never know. We weren't even supposed to get that hard ass northeast side of the storm but it fucked us up all night and the next day.

    Check this out from Barbuda before deciding:

    Most of the people I know are getting the hell out of Florida. And that's rare because usually they're among the ride or die crowd. I'm happy to hear that they're getting out this time. Now I just have to wait to see how family in the DR are making it through. The truth is if it's anything like the other islands we may not have contact with them for weeks.

    I'm on the West coast a bit above Tampa and it is crazy how people are reacting. I'll start prepping (sandbags and such) this weekend if it doesn't turn East. Man this is a rough hurricane season so far.

    My partner and I are staying in Orlando but I expect to be out of power for a while and I'm hoping my Cocoa Beach club won't be decimated. Currently packing up priceless heirlooms and such in plastic tubs with bubble wrap. Also drinking beer. Because that's what we do, damn it. Also, Djoser, get the fuck out of there if you can. I've been in Florida my whole life and even I'm freaked out,

    It's one of those fences built around 4 x 4 posts, with boards nailed on both sides, and horizontal beams about half way up inside the fence. She hangs there and jumps to the top at about 6' height when she hears me. I go feed her mostly by hand, all the other cats there scare the shit out of her and she doesn't like jumping down to eat where the rest of them do at mass feeding time. We were trying to leave food up there (& still do sometimes) at the top of the fence, but then the other cats jump up there, chase her away, and eat her food. So when I have time I will guard her while she eats lol.

    Six months ago, and for the previous year or so (I think she's maybe 2 years old but TINY from not eating), she was so skinny and her fur was in bad shape from stress. But still a pretty little thing. Now she is sleek and beautiful, if still tiny, and if still scared of other cats.

    There's places to hide around the complex, the cats have lived there for years and through big storms. But she will be a little more vulnerable I fear.

    So don't worry about me, worry about Angel.
