Default Instagram popularity contest in Queens, NY & North Jersey

    warning: wall of text

is it just impossible to make money in these urban clubs that have a huge instagram following if youre not popular on instagram? everytime i work in these spots i start to feel like i forgot how to be a stripper. i start to feel out of place.. and people will compliment me and tell me im thick, i have ass, i know how to move.. yet i make no money 4 times out of 5! the few nights i did good had me going back.. but it doesnt make sense when all the other nights i get nothing.

its like all these clubs in queens are a joke. ive seen gorgeous dancers with huge asses make nothing on some nights the club was packed. its like literally 95% of the customers are broke young people going for the novelty because its all rappers talk about. then the 5% that tip are the locally popular people that only tip the girls that have a lot of followers on ig. ive only been dancing about 4 months, and dancers that have been in the game a long time keep telling me it wasnt like this before.. welp here i am starting my dancing in the nyc metropolitan area in 2017.

i was making good money at a mixed dive, but now i wont go back because the manager was disrespectful to me. ive been trying to find another mixed-divey-urban spot. im considering white clubs, ive had people tell me i would do great in manhattan, but i refuse to work anywhere where extras are common.

i dont even necessarily expect any real recommendations here. i know dancers dont wanna say if their club is good for fear of loads of new dancers coming in. just want to vent and see if anyone can relate?

You can't expect much when there isn't even a drink minimum at the bar and when the bartenders are held to a higher standard than the dancers.

Smh. That's why I HATE urban clubs. The internet is killing the clubs!

Blac Chyna, Amber Rose, CardiB and the rest of them have changed the game.

Social media is extremely important, even if you only focus on local ventures and not trying to blow up all over the world. I hear and see this hustle a lot among my friends who are still working in clubs. It definitely takes more effort than just randomly showing up at a specific time or place when it comes to urban clubs.

yes its like its this big club/community/social circle that is so hard to break into. it seems certain local rappers/hosts/drug dealers/etc tip well, but others dont, so dancers gotta get to know whos who and check the flyers before deciding where to work each night.. its so much insider info thats necessary its just insane.. then the dancers, bartenders, promoters and managers are always gossiping about each other and throwing subliminals on ig.. so much drama

The key for me was to find mixed clubs, that didn't have promoters and intense bartender culture. Only NY/ north jersey really has this issue.

and the funny thing is, all this urban strip club culture blew up in new york from the influence of the south in through hip hop... but down south people think new yorkers are retarded with how they spend on bartenders

and yeah thats what im trying to teach myself to stick to right now.. i think i tried almost all the urban spots in queens and learned my lesson the hard way.. im tryna go to hi beams but they dont answer their phone or DMs. do you know if theyre okay with dancers walking in and what time is good? im driving from far so i never do walk ins

The bartender culture that y'all are talking about happens in the south too. Except I don't think I've ever heard anyone refer to it that way in the south? Bartender culture? But they are known in many cases to be considered as the rockstars of nightlife entertainment. In fact Bartenders were using social media to draw crowds long before dancers were. I mean back in the myspace days. I tended bar for 10 years(nightclubs, strippy and bars) Many clubs will not hire you unless you have a following. I can't speak on NYC but I can tell you quite a bit about Atlanta and Miami.

This is why I'm glad i got out of NY when i did. I mainly worked urban clubs out there. I'm so sorry to hear you are going through this. I still know of one mixed club with good money that isn't completely upscale. A lot of my friends have moved onto there but the scheduling requirements are insane. PM if u would like the info

That is so bizarre, I work in a more business style club and never had this issue. Being petite though I especially feel like shit when its more urban/young folks that come in.
Maybe try finding a different club around NY that is less urban. I'm sure it will be worth it even if its far because you'll be making more money.

It's gonna sound bad but it's a culture that rewards dysfunction. So the gorgeous normal girls will be too boring for them. They want the over the top, bad bitch, money addicted freakho type. See what I mean. Cardi B is an idiot and to an extent they want a chick who isn't more intelligent than them, who'll do something idiotic with the money to "stunt on dem hoes". Truthfully, you sound too intelligent. You have boundaries, you care about being arrested. If it was a mixed crowd I'd say go for the outliers like dorkier guys or non Black guys who are wannabes.
My roommate used to have a drug dealer regular/boyfriend and he was a flaming idiot BUT she could roll with him as long as she kept it dumbed down and pretended to worship him/his money.

I wouldn't worry about the extras others are doing. You realize in these urban clubs girls do escort? Chyna certainly made it super clear that she had a price. Try Manhattan and see if it works for you. Stop working for peanuts 4 days a week. That will burn you out super fast.
