Default Neil De Grasse Tyson: Too Late to Reverse Climate Change

Scientist and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson said Sunday that, in the wake of devastating floods and damage caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, climate change had become so severe that the country "might not be able to recover."

In an interview on CNN's "GPS," Tyson got emotional when Fareed Zakaria asked what he made of Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert's refusal to say whether climate change had been a factor in Hurricanes Harvey or Irma's strength -- despite scientific evidence pointing to the fact that it had made the storms more destructive.

"Fifty inches of rain in Houston!" Tyson exclaimed, adding, "This is a shot across our bow, a hurricane the width of Florida going up the center of Florida!"
"What will it take for people to recognize that a community of scientists are learning objective truths about the natural world and that you can benefit from knowing about it?" he said.

Tyson said he was gravely concerned that by engaging in debates over the existence of climate change, as opposed to discussions on how best to tackle it, the country was wasting valuable time and resources.
"The day two politicians are arguing about whether science is true, it means nothing gets done. Nothing," he said. "It's the beginning of the end of an informed democracy, as I've said many times. What I'd rather happen is you recognize what is scientifically truth, then you have your political debate."
Tyson told Zakaria that he believed that the longer the delay when it comes to responding to the ongoing threat of climate change, the bleaker the outcome. And perhaps, he hazarded, it was already even too late.
"I worry that we might not be able to recover from this because all our greatest cities are on the oceans and water's edges, historically for commerce and transportation," he said.
"And as storms kick in, as water levels rise, they are the first to go," he said. "And we don't have a system -- we don't have a civilization with the capacity to pick up a city and move it inland 20 miles. That's -- this is happening faster than our ability to respond. That could have huge economic consequences."

If everyone acted now, we might have time. But everyone on the planet would literally have to go vegan and stop using fossil fuels, like... TODAY. The oil companies would have to shut down and green energy would have to be used instead, immediately. We would have to redesign our cities to use less concrete and stop cutting down so many trees. But will this all happen? Probably not. Humans are too greedy and too stubborn. They don't want to change. They just want to keep eating their meat and keep putting gasoline in their cars and carry on business as usual.

We deserve this, really. Let Mother Nature destroy us all. But it's not fair to the environment and all the innocent animals.

I've been talking about this shit since the 90's, since I was a 12-year-old kid! Noone seems to care until it's too late. Even then, alot of people don't seem to give a shit that their home planet is being fucked. Or they are in denial that it's even happening. Honestly, I can't even feel anger about this anymore. I'm fucking numb. I have no more tears left.

I've tried to do my part, but if massive change on the part of humanity as a whole doesn't happen....well, fuck them. Humans will deserve their fate.

I got flooded twice, once last year and then again this year by Harvey. So yeah....excuse my bitter post.

Our so called president is a huge fucking problem now too. This was my problem with DT... all that budgeting for a fucking dumb wall.

Anyway, when I buy my home I'm getting solar and wind power. My next car is gonna be a hybrid too. I'm starting to get strict on recycling. I also unplug things that are off. EVERYTHING, minus the fridge. I turn off the water while cleaning dishes, brushing my teeth, soap my body in the shower & while shampooing my hair. The article is scary, but we need to be scared shitless to take things seriously.

Maria is a Cat 3 now and expected to hit Cat 4 and to have a direct landfall on Puerto Rico and the same Leeward Islands chain..

WWW Re: Neil De Grasse Tyson: Too Late to Reverse Climate Change

I'm no expert on climate change. Some of you may have read whole volumes on it. But I've suspected that one of the contributors may be the rise of China (and India and a few others) from a third world economy to an industrial super power. Look at this chart. If I'm reading this right, it shows that just China now has twice the emissions of the US.

    http://climateactiontracker.org/countries/china.html

And on that page, they seem to believe that China will live up to it's promises of emissions reductions. So, which of their factories and furnaces will they shut down? And look at the page on Russia. They are a big polluter too.

    http://climateactiontracker.org/coun...ederation.html

At least the US has been about the same over the last 30 years. Which makes me think that China, India, and others are the bigger cause...So, which companies in which states do we shut down and hope those voters don't mind? I do love your idea of more trees, and less blacktop. It helps. But will we be able to use just wind and solar to keep all the ACs running?

These are some of our truly most precious resources. They won't be happy until the Earth looks like the moon, drained dry and barren of all life.

So sad. At some point, I expect the wealthy to ship themselves off to colonize Mars. Earth isn't looking so good.

Now is seriously the time to think about where you live, and how you will be affected by climate change. It's only going to get hotter, and the oceans are going to rise. Facts are facts. I think living by a lake or the sea is a much safer bet than being on the coast of the ocean. And living in a place with earthquakes/hurricanes/tornadoes/active volcanoes is probably not a good idea, either.

Do I sound like I'm wearing a tinfoil hat? Lol. I've always taken this stuff seriously, but especially now... like Neil Degrasse Tyson said, it's a shame that our biggest cities are coastal.

And China has ~4.25 times the population, so you would expect them to have that many times the emissions. Unless you're saying they shouldn't be allowed to industrialize, or are entitled to less energy per person.

According to this 2014 data, there are six other countries that could output less carbon dioxide per person than China.

China and Saudi FUCKING Arabia, yes; the same kingdom that got wealthy because of it's massive oil fields, have been making huge strides to go solar or at least add solar energy production to their infrastructure. This should be a HUGE wake up call for all of us in the States. There are several European countries that are banning all non-electric cars by 2020.

Veganism is up by 600% worldwide.

So, yes it is too late to reverse climate change; in part because greenhouse gas emission is only part of the problem (the entire solar system is in a warming period right now); ie. the polar ice caps on Mars are also melting and there are no cars there that we know of... but the human pollution is adding to and exacerbating the naturally occurring phenomenon.

This is the whole point of the Paris Accord, not to reverse it but to lessen the long-term implications. This is why the lizard king and his minions support pulling out of the agreement. They feel that the economic cost does not justify the small reduction in emissions or the anticipated 1.8 degree in atmospheric cooling that is the expected result.

However, it is my personal opinion that job growth in sectors like solar and wind/turbine energy and the improvement to infrastructure (which is needed in the US regardless) to accommodate electric vehicles, would greatly benefit the US economy much more than trying desperately to bring back coal jobs. But what do I know? I only have a degree in economics and a passion for environmental activism since childhood. I guess if I were a reality TV star who owned a company that hosts competitions where women are given trophies on the merits of their physical attractiveness and had a dozen or so failed businesses and tens of dozens of lawsuits against me and said companies, for everything from racial discrimination to fraud, maybe I would be in a better position to make these calls for the rest of us.

I'm not saying they aren't allowed to industrialize. I'm merely saying that the emissions increase is partly their fault, and not just the West. The media and various groups often neglect to mention China and other countries rise as part of the cause. And I'm not sure about the "carbon dioxide per person". Even if China has or will have more industry than the U.S., with such a large population, they may seem like they are doing more to have lower emissions per person, at least for now. But so many of those masses are poor rural peasants. Will China deliberately keep them all underdeveloped forever? Should China be allowed to keep polluting as long as the "per person" ratio is low?

Color me ignorant. This is the first time I've heard about the solar system being in a "warming period" as well. I just Googled and found this:

"Man-made greenhouse warming has made a small contribution to the warming seen on Earth in recent years, but it cannot compete with the increase in solar irradiance," Abdussamatov said.
    http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...s-warming.html

Feel free to add whatever info and sources you had in mind. Oh, and you are far more educated than I am.
Can technology catch up in time? Could nuclear fusion be developed sooner? I don't know how even thousands more windmill blades and solar cells can generate enough to make up for the reduction in the current use of fossil fuels. At least not without a reduction in industrial output and a weaker economy. And we haven't even touched on the carbon trading part of the issue, and whether that actually reduces anything or just continues the current problem.

Agreed too late, however that doesn't preclude us from working now to stop it from getting worse and secondly investigate terrafroming the planet to remove CO2 and other emissions. For example, use biogenetics to create super plants to remove these gases. Of course when you have to do something on that scale you know there will be repercussions.

Sorry, been a few days since I checked into this thread.

This is from Nat Geo, which I find pretty reputable.

    http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...s-warming.html

We had terrible solar flares this month (same week as the hurricane); one that had it been only slightly stronger or come ever so slightly closer to the earth could have wiped out many of our electronic systems.

As far as the info about the entire solar system heating up, I do not have a specific source to point you to; I read about it on a conspiracy theory site and did a little research but there is a lot of information on it available to the public. The outer planets in the solar system are not heating as rapidly but they also have longer orbits.
