Default Aaron Hernandez posthumously diagnosed with 'severe' CTE

Former New England Patriots tight end and convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez, who committed suicide in his prison cell while serving a life sentence, has been posthumously diagnosed with the degenerative brain disease CTE. Hernandez's lawyer, Jose Baez, announced in a news conference Thursday that Hernandez's was "the most severe case they had ever seen in someone of Aaron's age."

He was a violent person going back to his high school days.....long before NFL was involved.

He was a gang member when he was younger and grew up in a really rough area. Football could have been his way out but he didn't really want to leave that lifestyle behind. The whole story is very tragic.

He played football for many years before playing in the NFL and before he murdered anyone. There's no way to know when CTE first began to affect him. More professional football players and former professional football players have committed murder than players of any other major sport, even if you exclude Suge Knight. I'm not sure, but I don't think there are any cases of any professional baseball, basketball, or hockey players that have intentionally committed murder.

His having a history of violence is because of football- not the other way around. These players don't start playing in college- they start in middle school. Ok he was a gang member. I have dated former gang members they are not getting into fights hardly ever- gangs are a business- they sell drugs! Their job is not getting hit in the head the way a football players is. The way a lot of Americans talk about football, especially Trumps recent comments that those who don't stand for the national anthem should be fired, they really speak to the legacy of slavery in the country. Shut up and play. We're gonna pretend there's no risk to your body and sanity in this violent game because we want to be entertained. Especially with all the NFLs little league programs in Samoa. American parents are not enrolling their children in football because of CTE so they're looking to the colonies for linebackers. It's really crazy to me.

It feels like the OPs intent was to link (and possibly explain...I sure hope not "excuse") this mans crimes to CTE. As far as I know CTE, while absoultley changing someone's thought process and leading to depression, does not make someone forget the difference between right and wrong. The dude was a scumbag period. He used violence and intimidation his entire life. I don't care how many times he got hit in his head.

Utter bullshit. His history of violence was because of football??? His history of violence is because he was a piece of garbage who chose to be involved in things he knew were wrong.

I don't think there is any way to know what type of effect CTE had on Aaron Hernandez, or if it caused him to act more violently. Former professional wrestler and murderer Chris Benoit also had severe CTE. As far as I know, he didn't have any history of violent behavior.

    From:
    http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=3560015

The tests, conducted by Julian Bailes of the Sports Legacy Institute, show that Benoit's brain was so severely damaged it resembled the brain of an 85-year-old Alzheimer's patient.
There are a few other football players that have committed murder, who are still alive. I don't think there's a way to determine if someone has CTE while he's alive, so there's no way to know if these players also had similar injuries.

And I'd be more willing to entertain the idea that CTE may have been a catalyst in Chris Benoit's case BECUASE he didn't have a history of crime and violence. We dont know enough about CTE yet to really have reason to think this though and Aaron Hernandez with his past shouldn't be considered as a baseline for any kind of determination.

No matter what this is going to be a fascinating case. Unless the NFL says fuck it and decides to cut a check to his family. As I'm writing this most likely that's what will happen. But I really want to see them address these issues with regards to all the brain damage.

His estate is suing the NFL and the Riddell company, the league’s official helmet provider from 1989 to 2013.

This needs to be explored. In NCAA colleges and universities fully one half of all male sports scholarships are given to football. Women have 8 full scholarships each for golf and tennis, but men have 4 each; why? Because they have like 85 for football. Even basketball gets dicked by football. Football sucks all the energy and money out of other sports, and even academics. I'm sure gladiators were exciting too but we don't have them.

I don't mind it, but if it is killing the players we need to either make it safer or switch to real football with everyone else in the world.
