Search Is it financially worth it to become a stripper?

I have been seriously considering stripping as a means to fast-track some of my financial goals. I currently work night shifts in an office, taking home enough to support myself, and while I could continue to do so it'd take me about 2 or more years of strict budgeting to earn enough to buy a car, fill out my savings account, buy a desperately needed new computer, etc. I have a budgeting spreadsheet and my savings plans all ready to go!

But I was talking to a friend (who is not a stripper, but has a few friends who do it) the other day and I mentioned I was thinking of stripping. She said, "You wouldn't make any money, I'm afraid. All my friends who are strippers are on Centrelink (unemployment welfare payments, about $500 or so a fortnight) and have other jobs, too. The industry's gone to shit."

I've spent the past few weeks basically downloading Stripperweb into my brain and I was therefore surprised by my friend's comments. Stripperweb has led me to believe that if you're smart about it and have good hustle, you can still make great money in this game even though things aren't as lucrative as they were a few years ago. If stripping pays so poorly, why would you bother with it while receiving welfare AND having another job? And then there's the fact I know my friend's friends buy $600 dresses, which aren't really affordable when you only have a part-time secretary job supplemented by welfare (unless you're bad at budgeting? Idk).

We are in Melbourne, which is one of the best cities in Australia to strip in.

Ideally I'd like to cut my current work down to 1 or 2 nights a week (just to stay grounded in the real world), and strip 2-3 nights a week. But would it be worth it for my financial goals?

Stripping industry has gone down here in the US. Can't speak for Australia. Can you dance day shift and keep your night job or switch to day shift at the office job?

I only work 3 nights a week in the office, so I already have some nights free to try stripping without giving up my current job. I just don't have the stamina or will to work 6 nights a week doing both, and my current work is so boring I'd be happy to drop some of those shifts if stripping can supplement my income. But now I'm not sure that it will! I know it's faux-pas to discuss specific amounts here, so apologies in advance, but I'd need to clear at least $250 per dancing shift to make as much as I currently do (just breaking even, nevermind fast-tracking my financial goals). That should be generally possible, right, though of course some nights just plain suck? Obviously an ideal night would be much more than that, but that would be the minimum to maintain my current standard of living.

Thumbs up Re: Is it financially worth it to become a stripper?

id say, just give it a go. go in for an interview at mens gallery or kittens, they seem to be the top earning clubs here in melbourne. see how you go while you keep your other job and you will know soon if its worth it.

Yeah, I suppose I should just go for it and see how it is. Do you have any experience with Men's Gallery? Do you know if they take girls who don't have any previous experience? I'm also interested in Centrefold. Would prefer to work at a non-touching club so Kittens is out.

mens gallery do want experienced girls, but i guess it all depends on how well you present yourself. centrefold seems to be a good one aswell, but there are some dodgy stories about it, too. you could try goldfingers, they hire people with no experience and are non touching, i am not sure about cash potential tho

If you have free nights you should go try it out regardless of earning potential. Look at it this way- if you already support yourself off your vanilla job every dollar you make stripping is extra money towards paying your debts down faster.

Depending on your area it can be hard to make a full time career out of stripping, but in your situation you should for sure give it a shot if you're interested.

I'd take what your friends say with a grain of salt- plenty of dancers out there are shady with their on paper income so they can still qualify for government assistance despite their true income being much higher than the cutoff. Not saying every stripper is making a mint but lots of people with cash income take liberties with what they claim, not just strippers.

I agree with SuperJa... it's worth a try.
It's one of the only legal professions I can think of that has doctor/lawyer level earnings potential with an initial investment that involves just the cost of shoes and a couple outfits.
Worst case scenario, you gave it a shot and it didn't work out; there's also a chance you turn out to be an awesome hustler and make more than you were expecting.

There are very few jobs that live up to financial expectations. You could go to college & then law school. Doesn't mean you will make money as a lawyer plus you would have all that school debt.

Now depending upon your age, what is the median income?

Very few jobs are great money off the bat, there is a learning curve, taking chance, hard work and paying your dues.

How expensive is the car you want to purchase? There are many reasonable good conditioned cars that will last you several years.

How expensive the new computer? Most things can be done these days from your phone or a tablet. Unless you are editing or have a job that requires lots of RAM & memory there are tons of affordable machines for under $500. Unless you are getting it for gaming then you are wasting money to play games.

I don't have a specific car in mind, but I'll probably go with a decent pre-owned one. I just want a sturdy, functional and safe car. I don't care about fancy.

As for my computer, I'm planning to build it myself so I can fine-tune it to my preferred specifications. I've given myself a budget of $2000 AUD as I need a high-powered desktop PC for music production, which is my main activity/hobby/art outside of work. I expect I will play some games on it too, although they're not my primary motivation.

I have enough in savings to be able to start building a PC today, but I'd rather not blow it all on one thing, hence why I thought dancing would be a good supplementary income. I don't have any debts that I need to pay off, thankfully.

Thanks for the discussion guys, I guess I'm just gonna go for it! My mum is a fantastic hustler so hopefully she passed that down to me. I'm willing to take the chance and put in hard work, I was just discouraged that maybe it wouldn't be worth it at all. But I guess I'll just have to discover that for myself.

I met a girl in Vegas a while back with whom I'm still friends with on facebook, actually. She danced in Melbourne and loved it. $10 dances and very busy all the time. I don't remember where though. You should try your luck.

Honestly not lately. Internet has ruined the hold that strip bars have on repeat money for adult oriented content.
