Default Shin splints from running! Want to be toned! What to do?!?

    Hi!!!

So, I started running again to tone up but with working four days a week I'm noticing my shins are sore and bending down and twerking are becoming painful and annoying. I don't want to be the grimacing stripper! I'm already wearing knee braces when I run because I have old knee issues. Please don't tell me do yoga instead. I'm dyslexic and can't tell left from right so exercise classes are the ninth circle of hell for me. Is there anything I can do to keep running outside or is the only answer to get on an elliptical like everybody else. I love the fall colours and fresh air and I live one block from the waterfront running path so it's really my preference. Thank you for your input and advice!

If you're dead set on running outside as your cardio there's some things you can do to hopefully help.

-Get your feet looked at. Sometimes shin splints are caused by abnormalities i.e. flat feet, rigid arches

    - Do some resistance exercises for your legs. Having weak or out of proportion thigh and glute muscles can mean the lower leg is handling more stress from running than it should be.

    - Stretch- shin splints can be aggravated by poor flexibility

    - Make sure you're running properly (i'm not a runner so I can't give you specific pointers there). Your form could be causing more stress on certain areas than it should be.

    - Try to run on softer but even terrain i.e. a flat dirt trail rather than concrete with elevation changes.

    - Get a good pair of running shoes that have been recommended for your feet. This may be pricey but having shoes that are meant for your specific stride will be helpful.

    - Avoid running when your legs are tired. You're more likely to end up with shin splints if you go for a run the morning after a long shift when your tendons and muscles are already trying to heal from the dancing.

-If you don't have a foam roller, get one. It is helpful both for maintenance on your shins and to heal shin splints faster.

walk then your body adapts very quickly so it will try to burn less fat everytime you run.

What type of surface are you running on? Grass is the best. Concrete is the worst.

Check out the running room store. They have these machines that look at how you run and recommend the right shoes. I used to get them when I did Muay Thai and flexibility was the key to dealing with them. A lot of stretching and one day they magically disappeared.

Stretch and warm up. I get them too when I run cold.

Rebounding! My knees are really jacked up from dancing but I can run on my mini trampoline no problem.
