I posted a few days ago about my nails (got them done!) and my plans to audition last night. Well, I did it! I knew it was going to be tough having my first night be a Friday, but the day job kinda made it have to be that way. So I wanted to share my story with other newbies here that haven't auditioned yet, because even though my audition went okay and I got hired, I still made a lot of rookie mistakes and I hope someone can learn from them.
So first, my audition. I did my hair and makeup before I went in, put on a sexy (but not too revealing) dress with what I call my "civilian" heels (4 inch). Sidenote, I've been doing pole fitness classes for about 5 months (I started for fun and fell in love with it, I DID NOT take the classes with the intention of becoming a dancer, please don't feel like you need those classes to be a dancer) and we do have an exotic class I take, so I already had 3 pairs of Pleaser heels in my arsenal to change into. I didn't think to pack comfy clothes for after so please remember to do that. 3:00 AM rolled around and while the other girls were changing into sweats, I had to get into a sexy dress and more heels.
In the county I was auditioning, a license is required. Since I do have a day job, I bought my license ahead of time to be taken more seriously since I've never danced before, and that was the first question I was asked. Whew! A manager came out, took me to the dressing room and told me to take my time and get ready, then head out to the DJ. It was only around 8:30 so the club was kinda dead, but I knew it was more appropriate to ask for an audition at an early dead time. I got up there, tried to remember to move slow and seductive and learned a little about the rules. If your club has a strip schedule (1st song clothes, 2nd song top, 3rd song bottoms) they don't mean strip slowly during that song. By the 2nd song your top should be off and by the 3rd song's start your bottom should be off. After my songs were over, I heard the DJ say "Welcome to the club, lucky McKenzi gets to go fill out a mountain of paperwork!" What a relief. After talking to some dancers and the house mom and all that, I've realized that in a good portion of clubs, the audition is really a formality to make sure you can get naked on stage. The more dancers they have, the more house fees they collect plus the spicier variety they have to advertise. Don't be intimidated by the audition, be intimidated for what comes after. Work. Hard work.
I've been reading SW for awhile now, newbie board and HH mainly, but being out there is nothing compared to reading about it. I messed up big time by not going out there and talking to everyone. As the night went on I watched girls go from table to table. I didn't get any dances because I didn't ask for any dances. I made some tips, but not much. A lot of that was because I didn't know how to work the crowd. No amount of reading can prepare you.
I tried to cater to myself and interests with my look and that can work for some girls and some clubs. I'm tatted (full sleeve) with bright red hair. I went edgy. Black pleather booty shorts with a long crotch to ass zipper, red fishnet top, and my 7" pleaser lace up boots. I had a super dark smokey eye and deep red lips. That might work on a slower night with a guy that wants to be dominated, but the Friday crowd didn't want edgy me. I got A LOT more attention when I changed into a neon bikini set.
I'm going back tonight with a whole new outlook. On stage, I figured I would show personal attention to guys who tipped. Wrong. I stuck to the pole waiting for the tip. What I SHOULD have done was interact with guys at the rail to start with and if they tip, stick around for more teasing. I knew about hustling thanks to SW but like I keep saying, there's nothing like being out there on the floor. All I kept thinking to myself was "I'm in the corner watching and doing the totally new baby stripper thing" but I'd already let my head game (or lack thereof) get me down and I didn't change it up.
It was obvious I didn't make much money, and house mom told me I didn't have to tip her out (especially because I didn't use anything of hers) but she gave me advice and was so cool so I told her I want to get into good habits to start with and gave her $5 (which technically was 10% of what I made) lol. My DJ absolutely refused any tips until I made over $100, so my goal tonight is to make enough that I can tip him well. I tipped security $5 as well because they escort us to our car and wait until we pull out.
So tonight, I'm going back to work. Since I'm hired, I'll wear comfy clothes there. I'm doing my makeup in a heavier version of my every day makeup with colors that suit my skintone and make me look great and done up instead of a sexy vampire (we'll save that for halloween). I'm gonna go out there and talk to everyone. I know what to expect now and I've got some good ideas as to what went wrong. On stage, I've gotta work for the tips and not expect them.
I can't thank you all enough for all of the advice in this forum. It's all been useful but at the end of the day, it's up to me to actually USE the advice!
