Default Hair Salons - High-End worth it?

Do you think high-end hair salons are worth the money?

Even within the salon, how much of a difference do you feel you get between the lowest priced stylist and the various other grades (senior, creative, artistic etc)?

The experience and expertise of a stylist is of course something I feel OK with paying more for, but are some of these salons also just relying on things like like plush decor, (overly) attentive staff, or a fancy food and drink menu to justify high prices?

I want good service, and obviously would expect somewhat higher prices if the salon is in a prime location, but I don't want to pay even more for my haircut just because they happen to have champagne on the menu...I have had one experience of a top salon and was no more blown away by my hairdo than at one of the regular places I would go to.

This was at least 10 years ago though, and as I'm currently wanting to revamp my hair I am tempted to try somewhere else.

    Any thoughts?

Have you considered going to a high-end prestigious beauty school/ beauty college? Do you have those in your area? I have found those to be worth while.

^I would consider it but I think I prefer someone experienced, even though I know they would be supervised there. I want a restyle and classy-looking colour which is why I don't really want to take risks.

In my lifetime, I have had more "experienced" stylists mess up my hair than student stylists...

About 12 years ago I went to a very expensive salon in Beverly Hills for hair extensions. The stylist pulled my hair too tight during the installation process. When the extensions were taken out I ended up with a bald spot on the top of my head which took a whole year to grow back completely. That was the last time I went to a hair salon. I learned how to do my own braiding and hair extensions. I get so my compliments. People ask me where I get my hair done. When I tell them I do it all myself they are amazed.

Currently, I do my own hair, skincare, body wraps, nails, etc. I only go to the salon now for massages and waxing.

^Yes I agree, quality can really vary even if someone is supposed to know their shit. That's why I still haven't found the one place I can trust to call 'my' salon and stop shopping around.

I do my own waxing, facials and nails too but I can't cut hair LOL. I trimmed it myself a few weeks ago but it needs serious help.

I got my salon off Yelp, I know mileage can vary, but I really like it..
I started out w/lower level stylist, then I had to have a redo so I started going to the guy that fixed it..he left so I bounced around, the guy I go to now is mid-level but he's great
I just went to a basic level for my last cut (cuts & color are done by different stylist s)
I liked my cutter a lot

I don't think so, I used to pay about $130 and it was meh. Then I went to a couple friends from high school who had recently graduated and they both did way better jobs... I only pay $70 right now.

I think the expensive place had overly confident stylists who didn't really try to 'get to know' my hair so it looked good but just generic.

if you go to a high end salon it can take a long time. my hairdresser is a perfectionist but I love her and I love the way my hair looks when she's done. I think it's def worth the money.

Like the other comments state, I think it really depends more on -who- is doing your hair rather than the salon itself. To be honest with you, I'm not sure if the salon I started going blonde at was high-end or not but I did pay big money during the transition, think, $200-300 each time. However, that was mainly because I was going from dark red to ashy blonde ... of course it was going to be an expensive and lengthy process. :p

That being said I think it also depends specifically on what you want. I'll definitely go to a beauty school for a trim and hair toning, but when it comes to something like extensions or doing a drastic very specific look I'd be too nervous to take a risk unless I know the specific student knows what he or she is doing based off of their previous work.

My hair is pretty simple. All it needs is some blonde dye and a trim. I had a really modest salon I would go to for several years in LA; now, I found one that is a bit more upscale but not too much so and I'm happy with it. It's about $120 to do roots and cut. When I first started in the industry, prior to finding my favorite salon in LA where I became a regular, I went to this one guy at a really upscale place in West Hollywood. Looking back at my photos, my hair looked awful because he didn't leave the dye in long enough. It was orange-ish. Plus, he made a move on me, and being the dummy that I was to the LA hook-up scene, I actually fell for it. Anyhow, I don't think that price is necessarily a reflection of quality. But then again, I'm relatively low-maintenance with hair. I refuse to wear extensions because I want to look polished but natural, so my needs don't really call for a high-end salon.

This is a good point. Personally I also want to avoid 'trendy/edgy' and go for 'classic' because I think there is less chance of a stylist determined to give me their fave latest 'look' even if it doesn't suit me.

Yep, I have curly hair. I also have only had colour in my hair once, a long time ago...I have hair salon anxiety at the best of times so don't want any mishaps or disasters, LOL.

Actually a year ago I had a keratin treatment done by a newly trained girl at a reduced price, and she managed to give me a mild chemical burn.

I have decided to book a cut with a senior stylist at a top salon (they have 5 grades and senior is 2nd one up). Her info page says she's good with curly hair.
Then if I feel happy having the cut there I'll ask for a colour consultation too and take it from there.

^^^ I pay 200$ plus tip for blonde micro highlights and balayage (two techniques) and a cut. 50$ for just a cut. If you have curly or wavy hair do not go to Sam's club for your hairstyle!!! My stylist takes one hour for just the cut because I have a lot of hair. Then she throws on my blonde and gets her assistant to work on me/check on me while she sees other clients. Process takes 3-4hrs. . Just do some research! Ask around look online. My salon is not fancy inside but is small and trendy in a prime location. Places with only two or three chairs are often good. 6-9 chairs is too many you're gonna pay crazy money to get your hair done by an apprentice just cause they have a green tea fountain.

I was a hairstylist for over 10 yrs, and what I think is that it's not a salon you're looking for, but it's a rockstar stylist.
Find a stylist that knows how to work with your type of hair. They aren't always the most seasoned stylist, so try people at different levels. (SOMETIMES stylists who have been doing it for yrs, get set in their ways and don't advance their skills. Newbies might not have the correct knowledge to protect hair from damage.)
Try going in somewhere and ask for a shampoo & style. It's a good way to try a stylist, without worrying if they'll hack you hair off.
Also a note, I have stylist friends who style better then they cut and vice-versa. So don't dump a stylist who blows your hair out just right, just because her cutting skills are sub par; just find someone else who cuts your hair the way you like it.

This's^ why a lot of salons have separate stylists that do cuts or color only but not both

I got my cut...I'm very happy with how it looks so far (blowdried straight) so hopefully it should be nice curly after I wash it too. I'm glad I didn't pay for a top stylist because I felt like the one I chose took time with the consultation and actually seemed to 'get' my hair. I liked the salon - I purposefully went on Monday morning at a quiet time so it was nice and chilled.

So I spoke to her about colour and TBH she seemed to be saying she thought it wasn't worth paying for colour there (the colour services are extremely pricey).
On another note she also didn't think I 'need' it as I have a nice natural shade, but I personally am unhappy with seeing these few silver hairs starting to appear through my dark hair nowadays. People will say 'oh you can hardly see them, there's only a few' but I don't want there to be ANY showing.

Pure white or silver hair can look great and if you are blonde its much more feasible to wait until you have loads, but it looks bad to have random straggly white hairs when you have black hair...I've decided that before going for full-on colour, I'm going to try Aveda Clove or Black Malva conditioner to see how well it enhances my colour and hopefully blends the silver.

I’m currently not going to Supercuts or something! The upscale salon school like Aveda sounds great. At the moment salons are a luxury for me for this reason.

I only go to "high end" salons, it is a few hundred dollars twice a month. I process my hair too much so I have to use only really good natural products or it'll all fall out. So my perspective, yes, it is worth it.

No, not at all. However, I got highlights and my hair "lifts" really fast so... I will try to put a photo up in the next few days once it is washed.

Let me know if you try that shampoo/conditioner how it works. I have med brown hair and have a couple grays but don’t want to color my hair yet. For now the grays are hidden by the way I part my hair and I’m hoping to put off coloring my hair for as long as possible.

^ I have got the conditioner only, as apparently the shampoo doesn't have much effect. I've used it once and I think the silvers are less bright and blending in more. I guess it should have a cumulative effect if I keep using it.

The directions say to leave on for a few mins but I read on a forum that people leave it for longer to get better results so I actually ended up leaving it for a few hours.

God no. I was blonde for about a year and a half and wasted so much money on high end salons. I finally went to a Hair Cuttery out of necessity and that stylist did such a better job for literally half the cost and so much less hassle and sales nonsense.

I just got a trim yesterday, $ it looks great..she flat irons my hair, then cuts it dry which I love.
Finally much better from last year's fiasco @ that other shit place, w/2 botched color jobs.
I like my neutral 'touch up' color so much, when it's time for highlights touch-up, I'm going to have color guy put that color in temporary form through the rest of my hair to give it a rest for a while.
