Any industry that is controlled by abusive men- Hollywood-will cause women to have mental health issues. In addition, mental health services are not easily accessible- Even when I did have health insurance my copay was a $100 dollars.
The narrative that sex work is bad because it causes sex workers to use drugs, commit sucide, etc.. is why everytime we tell someone we are a stripper they look at us like we are feral. If people keep perpetuating the narrative that sex work is bad and the girls are fucked up, they should write how it could be improved. Such as, if more women were directors and the workers were treated with respect. I think that would improve the workers mental health significantly.
The writer seemed really lazy and just writing about sex workers for the Attention and not any real concern about the sex workers welfare. The author asks, “what’s killing these porn stars?” but doesn’t even attempt to answer the question.
For example, the iPhone factory in China had to install suicide nets so the workers wouldn’t jump off the building. Does that mean phones are evil? Does that mean people that work in factories deserve to die because what kind of a person chooses to work in a factory? That’s crazy but that’s what people think about sex work.

The adult industry is a very isolating field of work. It's not something that many people can be open about to their friends and family because of all the negativity associated with it. In the case of porn and women who are abused, bullied, and harassed that is a sad reality of the mainstream porn industry. It shouldn't be that way but it is for many. For someone who already suffers from depression or other mental illness, this feeling of isolation can make it feel even worse. It's clear by the amount of suicides and reports of beatings and degrading treatment of women in the industry(ie. Rough face fucking, face slapping, choking, gagging until she pukes stuff) needs to stop. Bullying actresses for refusing scenes isn't cool either. No one should feel coerced to do anything. Changes definitely need to be made to not cause or worsen the mental health of performers.

One common denominator to female porn stars is surprisingly not the issue of mental health but rather that many are hypersexual as compared to the vanilla population. Many therapists argue that hypersexuality is really an OCD symptom but I'm thinking these women are just taking too many hits for being sexual warriors and get shit on by both men and women for being so. And for many men sex with a woman is just another power trip and nothing says manly like beating up on a "slut", their words not mine. This double standard garbage has to got to stop.

During the 1980s anti-Porn movement the media drummed up the deaths of porn stars for ratings & also frankly people loved gawking at trainwrecks.
More of the same media derp. If people could get as interested in teen runaways participating in survival sex behaviors maybe we could see some positive changes in society..

OMG people from all kinds of industries die at all ages for various reasons.
There are people in EVERY industry that have drug addiction & commit suicide.
Apparently there are predators in EVERY industry or don't ya'll read the news. Using this to negatively describe females in this industry which is world wide with all kinds in all different parts of it to describe all of us is bullshit.
Mental health is a major issue in general so is drug addiction. Unless you can prove everyone in a rehad program is involved in the adult industry in some way. I know plenty of stable people with families who are just in this industry to earn a steady income & do so for decades.

There is plenty of bullying from within the industry by the powers to keep performers under control. To keep them from Unionizing, from demanding condoms, to keep them from demanding a Union.
Right now they want every performer to take the prep pill and have sex with people who are HIV+ without condoms. There is more to all of this than just the bs being posted here. Where a pharm company will get to make bank and the people pushing it have stock in that company.

In an industry that employs thousands upon thousands a few suicides isn't really statistically significant. Like obviously it's awful that it happened but they've just been hyped up in the news because people looooooove reading about terrible things happening to women in the industry.
And the one woman whose followers bullied her over refuaing to shoot a scene she wasn't comfortable with? That's horrific. None of them gave a thought to her being a real person with rights and boundaries. Once you're a sex worker you basically cease to be human in others' eyes.

What’s the prep pill? You take it to prevent hiv. I think it’d be good to take as a sex worker, but you still need condoms! I bet it’s expensive too and you know the industry isn’t paying for it. I remember watching the girls in la protest against the law that would make Condoms mandatory for porn. I was like, seriously ladies? Condoms are amazing!

They also seem to get cut off from their support systems, very sad.

I think it's all of the above. Society is not equipped to openly support women in the sex industry, despite the fact that 90% of society (completely made up stat, but likely close to accurate) partakes in the services provided in one way or another. Resorting to drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism, rather than a legitimate avenue, is leading these women, and many others, down a very dark path.
I wish I could offer a solution, but until sex is destigmatized, I don't think there will be any mainstream movement to provide the same order required. I can only hope that those in the industry can band together in support of each other, rather than push themselves to the edge in competition.
Sounds about right^
This whole thread reminds me of this movie from the 90's (ill see if I can find title) where this woman was a cheerleader, religious family, etc. Somehow she ended up deciding she wanted to get into porn. At first the money was good, and she was able to take care of her family but then she got caught up - started abusing cocaine to the point it turned into a bad habit with negative health consequences and ended up with overwhelming feelings of depression, guilt, shame, etc. and the end of the movie she offed herself with a rifle.
Sure it's a movie and somewhat sensationalized but it was based on a real story of Shauna Grant https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shauna_Grant . and although a small percentage of performers end up this way if the numbers can be decreased that would mean less lives taken and more people satisfied with their lives/career/etc.
I personally think performers should be at least 21 so that way they can fully process the consequences of their actions. Many 18, 19, 20 year olds are sill sheltered and naive, jump into porn then fail to manage/ get help adequately managing their career/lives

The posted articles speak primarily of better-known mainstream vanilla performers, but there has also been a vast rash of very well-known fetish, kink, BDSM indie clip producer/actors, who have departed too early also. I'd say at least 3 that I recall from the ProDomme scene over simply the past couple years, the latest was the young, talented & gorgeous January Seraph. RIP.

Where Am I? Missing NYC
EXCELLENT point!!!
And I think a lot of both men and women end up becoming asexual when they have children and take on massive amounts of debt. Then cheating may enter the picture. Everyone's too tired. But when their partner turns to porn... they don't sit their and think "maybe I took on too much..." It's REAL easy to point the blame at Porn Stars and the Sex Industry. And then we have the MRA's (Red Pill Society). It's like... everyone will point fingers across the aisle rather than accept responsibility for the direction their lives have taken. We are living in a society where people love to say "IT'S NOT ME- IT'S THEM!!!" Yeah... RIGHT. Religion doesn't help either. The "moral highground" is complete bs. But we know this.
And then of course greed is another factor. Using human beings to do the nastiest stuff to get clicks. "Who cares if it hurts the star... we paid her/him... let them deal with it. They chose this." Well what if people finally say NO. Has their ever even been an Industry Strike? Even if people just go "Oh well... too bad... there are plenty of women to take their place.". Well... maybe it's time to STILL give that a shot.
Here is an odd angle to take. But I'll present it because I was a fan in the 80's and early 90's. Even dated a few. Look at the Wrestling industry: How many now have died because their work schedules were so BAD... that they ended up having to get in the ring no matter the condition they were in. And had to take drugs or prescription drugs just to get through it. I have heard hundreds of stories where even if they broke an arm or bicep or something... they HAD to wrestle. Leave their families for months at a clip. Driving from town to town with insane schedules just to hold on to their paychecks. Falling asleep at the wheel. Taking steroids to compete to just get or stay on the roster. And people like Vince McMahon pitting people against each other behind the scenes for his own amusement. If Wrestlers didn't agree to a story line... they were GONE.
NOW in recent years they have put up a wellness policy. But the older wrestlers... they are f'd. A huge list of wrestlers is suing the WWE but... I don't have high hopes sadly. When a person is an Independent Contractor... no insurance. No dental. No after care. No therapy. No NOTHING. A different story is Pro Sports players. They have no idea how to handle their money. They aren't taught. And they end up going broke. There's a documentary about that I watched on youtube. I can't remember the name.
My suggestion is that everyone should put together the ultimate article to the New York Times or Washington Post. And consider a strike. Idk if the Woman's movement is ready to include the Sex Industry. (I fear they are not...) but... when I see someone like Stormey Daniels continuously have "The Porn Star" rather than just Stormy Daniels make every headline because she slept with the cheeto in command... you know... it's time for everyone to take the reigns and control and not put up with this bullshit anymore. To run our own careers... and help other women succeed. Anyone 18- 100 HAS to have a safe company to work for. And the pay be befitting of the work. TRULY befitting.
It would be really nice if we could all band together and raise money to put together just 5 or 6 female lead companies... For Sex Workers.. BY Sex Workers.
Food for thought anyway.

Very sad. It's not just porn stars, but it seems that a lot of people in the entertainment industry die fairly young. A significant number of rock stars died before 30.
