Elephant Hunter: "Okay, let me take this big ass rifle, get within 100 ft of the elephant, shoot it and watch it die"

Help me understand because it makes no sense to me.

For those that do it, I imagine it's about the trophy, not the hunt. They're results driven, not process driven, so the easier it is to get what they want, the better.

Personally, the journey is more important to me. The best stories involve a journey, with challenges requiring investment of effort to achieve a goal. Sometimes, the trophy at the end of the journey is unnecessary, and the experience gained is, in itself, it's own reward.

    My opinion is probably opposite......

I think it's inhumane and sadist.

    It's not a fair sport.

Only animals I think it's okay to hunt are over-populated animals, animals that are about to attack you. In these cases, if an animal is hunted - every part should be used and nothing should be wasted. It should be done as humane as possible.

I'm sure people have been "hunting" (or killing) elephants forever. Just about any animal, bird, or fish has been killed at one time or another. But as to why, in this so-called enlightened age, anyone would want to kill certain types of animals, is beyond me. True hunting should be only of plentiful species that are either a challenge to kill or have a useful product, such as meat, hide, etc. Deer and some water fowl come to mind, as well as fish. I would take no pleasure in the death of any animal that possesses so much intelligence and pride.

I don't know. It is insane to want a risk free way to kill things in their environment, that have no relationship to you at all. But certain people (lots of people) imagine that being able to have an advantage makes them somehow superior. There are entire churches and religions founded on that precept. So by killing a thing that could easily kill you in a fair fight, you prove that you are superior.

Additionally, status. Make anything a status enhancer and people will do anything no matter how insane to get that status. So if you've killed an elephant, it proves you have the $50,000 or so that requires to throw away on killing things, and you're a hero among other people who kill things risk free for no reason. You see examples of this behavior everywhere.

I just don't get anyone that has stuffed dead animals in their home. Heads mounted on walls, bodies with the head laying on the floor. Just sad and weird.

Eta - I saw a home like that once and I wanted to gtfo soon. It was disturbing seeing the facial expressions on them. Very weird fetish.

Poaching Wars With Tom Hardy. Talks about the Elephants and Rhinos and the Asian Black Market. It also goes over the other side of poaching and how it effects the African villagers who assist in the poaching. If the laws were enacted to prevent big game hunting, then entire villages would perish. Unless something else were to help sustain their existence. Its a great documentary.

Because they are pieces of shit.

I am all for the pink dye on elephant and rhino tusks/ horns.

There is no need. I don't agree with hunting at all but give a bit of leeway if it's something you are going to eat. Obviously, it is my personal opinion but I do not see the "Sport" in it at all. It's something men with tiny dicks do to compensate.

That would probably explain why Trump's son was so eager to kill something and take a picture with it.

Never thought I'd get a laugh out of such a sad thread. But as with so much humor, the reason it's funny is that there is truth behind it. (And I know you were being serious actually--furthermore I agree).

I've never gotten the whole hunting mystique, except in the case of the old frontiersmen who did it to survive.

The elephants being slaughtered, in particular, just makes me sick. They are so smart and have such clear emotional capacity. Just read the book When Elephants Weep, if you can get through it. I am not ashamed to say that I could not finish this book:

    https://www.amazon.com/When-Elephant...elephants+weep

And sometimes the people killing them for ivory will use chainsaws on the elephants while they are still alive (but incapacitated and/or dying), I've seen the photos and they are HORRIBLE. The ivory hunting is of course different than trophy hunting, and even worse.

I've never been able to comprehend what could possibly be thrilling about hunting elephants or animals of any kind. With elephants I'm guessing it's their tusks, ivory, that people want. They know they can make money off of it. I think it's only about money and greed for elephant hunters.

In general, people hunt what they eat. But those trophy hunters, are the same kind of people that enjoy things that average joes can't do. Like buying limited edition watches and private jets, it's all about ONLY they can do without even considering the damage they have done. Same assholes. Although, they will do it under cover of paying the high price for the long-term benefit of the conservation.

I am saying this with certain hypocrisy since I have been to a few turkey hunting trips at a family farm. I am sufficient with guns and do not believe hunting rare magnificent animals takes extra skills. It's not a sport anymore; it's an exclusive killing act.

Boonchai Bach (I love his first name) is now in police custody for Animal Trafficking in Thailand https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-...ed-in-thailand

    From the article:

Boonchai dealt with large quantities of pangolins, tigers and lions, smuggling the contraband across the Mekong river and on to dealers in Laos, Vietnam and China, says the group. But, The Guardian reports, his main products were allegedly rhino horns and elephant tusks, amounting to thousands of tons.

    He is gross!

Not only is he destroying animals in his country he got the nerve to traipse his ass to another country and destroy their animals too?

    From same article

China is believed to be the world's biggest consumer, helping fuel the annual poaching of some 30,000 elephants, National Geographic says. As of Dec. 31, the country's legal ivory trade was shuttered, in accordance with a 2015 agreement with the U.S. But the illicit trade of ivory continues to flourish.

    https://www.crowdh.com/china-secretl...aching-africa/

While many Chinese are becoming more aware and sensitive to conservation and wildlife issues, ivory’s draw as the ultimate status symbol has been hard to overcome. As National Geographic reported earlier this year:

In Chinese the word for ivory is xiangya, meaning “elephant tooth,” which has led many to believe erroneously that ivory can be taken from an elephant without inflicting harm. The nonprofit International Fund for Animal Welfare did polling in 2007 in China that found that 70 percent of respondents didn’t realize an elephant had to be killed to take its ivory.

China and the U.S. both agreed to “near-complete” ivory bans, which prohibit the buying and selling of all but a limited number of antiques and a few other items. The U.S.’s ivory ban went into effect in June 2016. China’s goes into effect December 31, 2017.

A recent survey by the World Wildlife Fund and the wildlife trade monitoring organization TRAFFIC, however, found that only 19 percent of people surveyed knew about the ban. But once they were told of the ban, 86 percent of those surveyed said they supported it.
