    Default Going blonde help?!

I am having some dilemma with my hair. I went in August to a salon to get a blonde balayage. My hair was 100% virgin to any coloring and heat. She used the highest developer but when she went to take the foils off she said my hair is hard to lift and that is is like I had dye in it because the bleach had little effect (which I didn’t)
It turned to a nice strawberry blonde shade but it lasted maybe 2 months and turned an ugly sandy brown that purple shampoo wouldn’t fix so I dyed over it with a dark brown box dye.
NOW I am wanting to try blonde again because my club is full of dark hair and this would really make me stand out. But I am so scared of my hair frying or falling out. I am wondering if I should pursue this again knowing that my hair is hard to lift or stay the dark route? I wouldn’t mind a dark vampy look but like I said I want to be one of the only blondes

I doubt she used 50 volume developer on you..i wouldnt really trust that stylist.
First of all blonde is upkeep, you will need to retone every month or two. That is why it looked bad after a few months.
If you are going to do this at home do a lot of research but this is what I would do:
    1. Use a color remover to strip the boxed dye
    2. Use a porosity equalizer over your whole hair
    3. Bleach your virgin hair with 30 volume to match the level of blonde the already bleached hair is (apply bleach to roots last)
    4. Once the two parts of hair are pretty even do an overall 30 volume bleach, that should take you to a level 8 or 9.
    5. Tone your hair

Do lots of research. Make sure you keep your hair's protein to moisture ratio within the normal range. I use keratin conditioner, shea moisture brand conditioner, and almond oil deep conditioner for that.

I believe she said 20 developer. From my brief research I thought 20 was a high and potentially damaging level. Idk anything about hair coloring lol!! I’m definitely having a professional do it but thanks for all this info! What is the difference between purple shampoo toning and getting it toned at the salon?

20 is nothing on virgin hair she should have used a 30. How dark were you? You using box dye means you need to at the very least do a strand test to make sure your hair can take bleach again. Toners in a double process can be perm color or semi perm color mixed with developer. This is what gives you your actual shade of blonde after it has been bleached. Purple shampoos just temporally take out brassiness by working on the opposite of the color wheel. I actually hate them as a bright blonde, very easy to get blueish hair for a few days. Taking all this perhaps go to another stylist and do a heavy balayage if your hair can take it. Blonde is a real commitment, I do a dp every 4.5 to 5 weeks

I’m naturally about a 3 or 4. Cool toned dark brown with reddish undertones. This is what I am thinking when I go. Have them use olaplex, a higher developer, and I will have coconut oil in my hair to lessen the damage. Does this sound like a good plan?

Just be honest about the box dye, they have mineral deposits and if you use foils it can burn, like the hair off! I don't honestly know if olaplex helps with box dye damage...I use 3 once a week overnight, coconut oil will help more once you are blonde. Your biggest hurdle is the box dye. The one time I verged away from being blonde I used a box dye ONE time and I was screwed for about a year. This was pre balayage and I had to do mini highlights very slowly and couldn't get blonde again for what seemed forever! You might be encouraged to get a haircut, not sure if you use extensions or not. BTW anytime you put bleach on your hair it is damaged it's how you baby it afterwards.

It was a semi permanent so hopefully I can wash it out with clarifying shampoo. But I will let her know. This is why half of me just wants to stay dark lol. My hair is to my waist so you can imagine how worried I am about losing half of it.

I am by now means a hair color expert but I did the same thing as you... kind of. I had brown deposit dye in my hair and went blonde. The best advice I can give you is to try and do it over time with highlights or gradually lightening it than all over blonde. I’m naturally a light-medium ashy brown... I had my hair dyed a darker chocaltely brown when I started dancing... then when I wanted to blonde I had my hair dresser do highlights and I kept getting more and more and lighter and lighter until eventually my hair was super platinum. I agree with other posters that she didn’t use a strong enough developer

Did you have a significant increase in money from the lighter hair?

Blonde/ lifted hair brasses over time, so the toner she put in your red hair faded out. It's not something that can really be corrected with shampoo and conditioner. The first time I went it went from auburn red to an electric yellow to finally a more white yellow tone. It will feel like your hair is falling out for the first few weeks each time but each time you get it bleached, apply a protein treatment (you can buy the Aphogee from the store) and it will help A LOT. I also sometimes put coconut oil in it and I straighten it and wash it just a little bit. It's been about 3 years and I would never go back!

After you get the whole head handled, the roots become WAYYYY easier to deal with. I only have to get my roots done every 5 weeks when the black growth shows. BEWARE, the contrast between dark hair and bleach blonde isn't too appealing.

If you're into keeping it safe, I would see if you could work your way up- do partial highlights in blonde, then go back and do more highlights, then go back and do more. Or you can do a bleach treatment yourself at home every 2 weeks (WITH HOT OIL AND PROTEIN TREATMENTS YOU CAN DO AT HOME) and then see a stylist to correct the roots. It takes time but once everything is done, the benefits add up.

Your hair does not have to be dark forever. I've repeatedly dyed my hair darker and went up a few shades. It only becomes a problem when you're dying your hair/ bleaching it every 2 weeks. It sounds like a while has gone by and your hair has recovered into a much better state. If y6u want to go blonde, I would try again. Go for it!

If your hairs base color is dark its best to have her blond your hair in levels so it stays healthy. DON"T BLEACH YOUR OWN HAIR! Go back to the stylest and have her start over , she should of educated you on the care and upkeep of going blond. I am on my third blonding visit and have probably at least 4-6 to go .

Is dying bleached hair back to dark hard to do? Because I noticed when I dyed it the color was lighter on the bleached part than the top of my head and it washed out fairly quickly from the bleached part. Wondering for when I dye it again later on.

Yes! However I dance in an area with a lot of Latina dancers with long, dark hair and there would only be a handful of blondes really at any time on thje same shift. had it REALLY blonde though.

I've dyed my hair many colors over the years, included bleached it to platinum blonde (after having dyed it black) the higher the number of the developer the harsher it is on your hair. 40 volume IMO is too harsh, I use a 30 volume developer. You can use 20 volume too, but it just takes a longer time to get it light. The higher numbers will get your hair lighter quicker. Bleaching does destroy your hair though, as it strips the nutrients from it. If you like having long hair I don't recommend bleaching it. To go from a dark color to blonde you'd have to bleach it multiple times. (I broke the rules when I first went from black to blonde, like doing multiple bleach sessions the same day until I got it the color I wanted.) Also if you recently dyed your hair, they have to use a dye remover before bleaching your hair.

I mistakenly went almost blonde & it was a totally disaster (my skin tone doesn't allow for anything approaching blonde.)

My advice, spend top dollar on products & touch ups because "busted looking" bottle blonde is easy to spot from far away and makes people cringe.

good advice. go to someone who uses olaplex or b3 (those are products that will make a significant difference in how healthy your hair will stay with bleach) and think about what's more important to you: blonde or healthy and long. it's rare you can have both, especially when you go back and forth like you are trying to do.

I just bleached my front blonde from a black (box dye) & it has been some what of a bitch to get it out. I did use a color remover first though (try OOps color remover, it works better on darker dyes than the beyond the zone packet from Sally's did) then I used a 30 volume w/ the blue bleach packet from Sally's on the darker parts, left it on wrapped in foil for about 30-40 mins off scalp then washed & rinsed using Ion protein buliding for damaged hair shampoo & conditioner. Had to go back another time to get all the brassiness out of it but it did the job

I admit I know nothing about the chemical processes of dyeing and bleaching hair, but your description of what your stylist did to your hair sounds really harsh! I do agree with the advice about lightening your hair in stages.

OP, if your desire to go blonde is just for work, why not look into getting a good quality wig or two? At least while you work towards getting the light shade you want. All the time and money you're investing in your hair now would just be wasted if you end up destroying your hair in the process.

What a story, harsh indeed. I also agree on getting some wigs, sometimes it's more convenient than some permanent hair color. As for the blonde hair, I would suggest reading and choosing either Fanola or Jhirmack shampoos. It should pigment your hair back as well as tone it to icier color.
