People who obviously shouldn't have guns have them and Lax security.
Deranged mass killers and mass murderers know security loopholes.
I don't get why more schools/movie theater/churches/etc don't have some sort of metal detectors and tighter security upon entrance?!?
I also think like the article says 'people are getting numb to it' and also maybe they don't think anything can be done without encroaching on their gun rights

^^
Plus the same thing happens over and over- argument is made for better gun laws, NRA has politicians in their pocket, politicians just say 'mental illness" but then don't do anything to improve that either. And the cycle repeats itself ad nauseum.

^^^^^ Ya'll, above comment is coming from someone who doesn't even live in this country.
TBH with you the first one I even heard about was the one in KY. Shit doesn't even make the news anymore. There are so many, many issues in the US right now. I'll keep my political opinions to myself in this moment. For once.
I had a legit conversation with a friend today that if we could make the same income and live outside of the US we both would.
It's sad. Kids these days are so extreme. We have 10 year olds committing suicide because of bullying and others killing because... I don't know why. And not to point a finger, but where are the parents?? My friends that have kids are UP their asses. I know what my nieces and nephews are doing and who they are with at any given time in the day and some of them live far away. Like, PAY attention!!!
When is the paradigm shift supposed to occur? Why are humans so flawed.

It's incredibly sad. People have been repeatedly upset by these shootings, and I think now they are starting to look away. Our country has gone through decades of mass shootings, with virtually nothing being done about it by the government. It's not shocking news anymore. It's everyday life.
I'm not saying it should be, but this is our reality.

Citizen's United is the real cause. That moronic Supreme Court ruling is taking the entire country down as the money owns Congress. It's not just the NRA but the food industry is allowed to poison us and the same for the pharmaceuticals; all for campaign contributions.
Worse, there are allegations that Russian money was funneled through the NRA to finance Trump's campaign. Third world status here we come and we'll soon be one of the shitholes Trump pontificates about.

I try not to pay attention to all this but there was actually a couple of shootings that were close to home, which made me think a bit more about the whole issue. The church shooting in Southern Texas was very close to where I used to live and still have friends there. The Vegas shooting is in the city to which I would regularly commute to work, when living in LA.
Why so many mass shootings? Maybe not enough love in this world. We live in a country that where narcissism is en vogue. Just listen to the music of our day. Family systems are broken, community is nonexistent, yet individualism and anomie are in proliferation, the former of which is not necessarily a good thing if there is no social support system to balance it out.
Also, guns should be illegal. Period. Yes, it's our "right" as Americans. It's in the constitution; it's in the amendments. Well, amend the amendments. Didn't these same documents used to argue in favor of guns once label a woman and a person of color as less than a white man? Well, these documents were ratified to reflect America's social progress. Why can't we do this with gun rights? As a friend remarked, one needs a bullet-proof vest nowadays to go anywhere nowadays. That's too bad. It's no way to live.
There are a few good industries in the US that are the best in the world, top-tier, with no other country offering as much opportunity in the industry, and that would be the only reason to remain in this country. So, if you work in television/film/music, there is no country in the world that will value you and esteem you higher as long as you are commercially successful. America is arguable the best to cash out on a tech start-up by selling it to yahoo. But what poor kid has a chance at that? It's usually someone coming from the upper middle class who lands in the 1% due to success in tech. Then, of course, there is finance, with nyc being one of the worlds meccas. I don't see anything else that would make US a country worth staying in unless you are an immigrant from a third-world country where using your college degree to work at Starbucks is truly a step-up than where you'd otherwise be in your home country.
In a multitude of ways, the US is indeed on it's way to becoming the "shit hole" country Trump pontificates about. Apart from the economic reasons I've mentioned, the ever-increasing gun violence and the lack of response to curb it, is another very good reason. These forms of domestic terrorism will contribute to it's deterioration.
I'm surprised that metal detectors are not becoming standard procedure in schools now. Of course that wouldn't be able to stop anyone from coming to a school and opening fire outside of the school. It is sad and scary how many shootings are occurring these days. It seems that (some) people are callous to what is going on until it hits home for them and they or their loved ones are personally affected. This should be a clear indication to the government that something needs to be done in regards to gun control. They are making guns too easy to access and due to an obvious lack of active parental presence and supervision in their lives, the guns are ending up in the hands of teens and young kids. The parent is not being a responsible gun owner, imo, if their child was able to freely access it.

Not a mass shooting or a school shooting, but I heard gunshots shortly after leaving the club this weekend in KC, and apparently some guy was shot dead. First time I've been that close to a shooting since I've been back home. I believe in the right to bear arms, but do agree background checks should be expanded and certain situations should disqualify ownership. Also don't understand how an argument at the club could ever warrant murder. Someone with that mindset should not have a firearm.
Sidenote, but related: ladies, please be careful when leaving the club. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir, but damn, some of these clubs are in terribly lit areas. Walk with a friend or something, I dunno. Just please be careful.

My honest opinion is we have to bring back the mental health care system where people are signed over to the State for as long as it needs to be done....
Due to the lack of places for dangerously mentally ill people to stay AWAY from other people.....we the public are the tragic guinea pigs in a failed experiment.

Seems to go right along with the "nice guy" plague.

^^
Yeah the "American Dream" culture basically makes being poor into a moral issue, not an economic one. Like in the US, if you're poor obviously you just need bootstraps and you don't work hard enough. If you get "handouts' you're just stealing from people who "actually work". They'll glorify stories of single moms working 3 jobs while going to college without recognizing that this isn't "inspiring" this is a reality that NOBODY should have to deal with and that most people just aren't capable of, and there's nothing wrong with that.
Other countries recognize that nobody actually wants to be broke and homeless and there's more too it than just being "lazy".

Sorry but as someone who went to schools with metal detectors in them, they really did nothing to stop violence that happen at my schools. They are not the answer because their presences alone did not stop fights, certain weapons from getting through, and etc.. Plus, it was well documented that at my schools the metal detectors would break down and during those days people brought weapons to school. Or apathetic security officers would let people thru if they didn't feel like running everybody through. Now, you would have to pear the metal detectors with a major police presence at the school for it to work. But that is pretty bleak but it is true.
Wolves may lurk in every guise / Now as then, 'tis simple truth / Sweetest tongue has sharpest tooth.

schools need armed guards !! The no gun policy doesn't do anything having armed security does! people never hear about police stations getting shot up you know why because they have armed guards!!
Mine doesn't lol. They either have metal detectors or safety glass. The people committing these types of crimes also love to go out in the blaze of glory by suicide by cop.
Also consider the Fort Hood shootings which ya know were on a military base with well lots of guns...

3 1/2 weeks later and it's 18.
This last one hit hard though, as indeed it should.

"Well done. Here are the test results: You are a horrible person. I'm serious, that's what it says: 'A horrible person.' We weren't even testing for that."
There is a law to prohibit this kid getting a gun. But FBI didn't act on it. So what's the point to get a new law if you are not going to use it?
I like being alone, I just don't like being lonely.

That piece of shit Marco Rubio has all these kids blood on his hands. Feb. 16th there was a secret meeting amongst FL GOP members to LOOSEN gun laws. They got caught by some low level Dem state rep. There were protests yesterday in my city, and I missed them until I saw it on the news. I am not saying gun control is a partisan thing, just that in this instance this is what went down.
This is sickening, but I honestly think this one will be the one where something gets done to prevent the next one.
It is true that the kid would have gotten the gun anyway if he really wanted to but assault rifles are far too common in this country, and esp. in Florida. These machines are designed for warfare, to kill as many people as possible in a short time frame. No on needs them for personal use.
