Default Dealing With Brain Fog from Sleep Deprivation

Do any of you ladies have tips or tricks for getting through the "foggy brain" that happens with you're sleep deprived? That feeling like you're almost drunk. I love sleep and don't try to deprive myself of it any longer than necessary, but lately, with trying to bust my ass in all areas of life, sometimes I only get 3-4 hours of sleep or am up with minimal doze-napping for 36 hours at a time. The foggy brain thing scares me since I usually do have to drive a lot even when I'm like this. I don't remember dealing with this so badly when I was younger and constantly busy. I try to at least do yoga every morning to get my body moving and not eat terribly unhealthy, drink plenty of water, but it doesn't help a whole lot. I hate drifting through an entire 16+ hour day feeling intoxicated when it's just literally sleep deprivation.

I know a lot of you girls dance while also working a day job and/or going to school. Surely, there are some tips, or even supplements you've discovered, for pushing through a single tough evening before you can hit the hay for good.

And caffeine isn't really an option for me. At best, it does nothing to actually wake me up, and at worst, just makes me feel anxious and sick which is the last thing I need when I'm already not at full mental capacity.

Not a lady, but I hope it's ok if I share something that worked really well for me.

When I was in Iraq, I didn't get much sleep for various reasons. Something that worked wonders for me was Zipfizz. It's all natural vitamin B12. No caffeine, no calories. Just pour it into a bottle of water (be careful as it does fizz up) and you'll be alert and ready to go for 5-8 hours.

You can find it on Amazon and it comes in a variety of flavors. Grape was my favorite. The packaging says to never take more than two in a day. I never needed to. I'd take one when I woke up, and within ten minutes I'd feel better. Took another halfway between lunch and dinner. Best energy I've ever had, and no crash at the end.

Power naps, green tea and stabbing yourself in the thigh with a needle when you start to doze off.

Agreed with power naps. If you can try to get at least an extra hour or two of sleep. Be careful and have someone else drive if you can't get the minimal amt of sleep/

I unfortunately know what you mean about brain fog. I also hate that feeling of being drunk all the time, and I experience it often because of mental health stuff.

Drinking a small amount (6oz maybe) of ICE cold water can help me get my brain together when it's not wanting to behave. You could also try Emergen-C, B-12 supplements, or Yerba Mate drinks.

One last suggestion, which you should do as legally as you're comfortable with: buy, or get a prescription for immediate release Adderall. Lots of dancers I know have prescriptions and swear by taking even half of a 20mg pill before work.

Just came to say ;( be careful with adderall though. It can sneak up on you real quick and cause a nasty crash. It's good for pick me ups but it's easy to become dependent on it..

^Also, if caffeine is a problem, other stimulants may well be. Having said that, I find matcha tea quite helpful. It does have caffeine - I also can't tolerate caffeine in other forms - but the caffeine in matcha doesn't give the same jittery or nauseous feeling at all.

I like Teeccino, in hazelnut flavor. So good! It's suppose to be a natural energy booster without caffeine. I put in silk almond hazelnut creamer and it is amazing. It taste like hot cake and good for your digestion. Yessss https://teeccino.com

I like this too, with coffee creamer. Tastes better with coffee creamer. https://www.amazon.com/Matte-Lećo-8-.../dp/B007CA36WK

@jessajade I love matcha tea; I too have a caffeine sensitivity and it makes me anxious and jittery.

After some nights of working, I get brain fog even if I get 6+ hours of sleep, with naps/coffee/water/b12 lol. I think my body is a wimp and LOVES going to bed early and waking up at a decent hour. Staying up late and sleeping in and the inconsistency of our sleeping schedules throws off circadian rhythms and makes me personally super hazy. Def. try a sleep mask/black out curtains if you havent already. Take a bath after work if you can to try and relax your body before bed so that u get all the best rest from those few hours. It sucks cause u may not have the energy for it, but being healthy and eating lots of fruit and vegetables (esp. leafy greens), doing yoga/pilates, and just doing lots of self-care is so important to beat the body/brain fog.

Side note- if you deal with fatigue from work and added issues like autoimmune disease...…

    * filtered water only for food and cooking. A sad side effect of life in America is a lot of areas have very rank tap water.

    * pre-plan your meals. If you tend to get "food coma" after a heavy meal but need to stay awake another 6-7 hours, lighten up your food or carry around protein bars or nuts. Food with Vitamin C is a good energy booster, along with water or caffeine.

    * pack Tums, candied ginger or peppermints in your bag or work vehicle if you tend to need those things after meals but are still on the clock. They're handy in case someone else at work needs them too.

Ooh, thanks too late for the 15+ hour moving expedition (not an exaggeration) but I'm definitely getting that!
