Default Your own website vs Clip Site

    Hey everyone,

I looked and looked but I couldn't find this answer anywhere. Does anyone know the downside of having your own website vs. putting your clips on a clip site? I'm on niteflirt and some of my clips aren't appropriate for their platform. I have a clips4sale store but someone brought up why not have your own website so you don't get a percentage taken out. It makes a ton of sense but I haven't seen many women have one but many have clip stores. Is it because of the traffic that the site brings? Or does it have to do with sites like those protecting you from payment issues like chargebacks (I'm thinking of PayPal and them banning you if you receive a payment that's adult/sex related)

And for anyone that has their own website, what web hosting service do you use? I was thinking of using Squarespace but I wasn't to sure..

1 - Its insanely expensive to have an adult business account with credit card processors. How do you plan to take payment? Do you have a business name you are going to have the charges billed as? Most customers don't want their CC statements to have anything porn related on them.
2 - Do you have the server space to upload all the videos you make with the ability for customers to download? Will it support adult content?
3 - How do you plan to drive traffic to yourself?

Selling videos on a site like c4s is an excellent way to start, to build up a fan base. You can experiment & evolve more easily with a clip store site. Then once you are making a steady income & have improved upon quality & such open up a pay site.

There is a lot to learn & do A/B testing, clip stores work best for it You need to learn editing, marketing, photography, performing in the vids, lighting and such. Clip stores you can be earning money quickly where as a pay site takes much longer to get rolling.

Also to make any kind of sales on a site you need at least 100 vids. Practice & find what works best for you on a clip store, then once you got that stuff figure out put all that content on a pay site you built.

Yes, you have to pay processing fees for Visa & mastercard, but the steady income from a pay site can be worth it. [email protected] works for mojo host & can help you with a hosting company & elevatedx.com is an excellent platform. Owning & doing it all yourself is always the best thing to do.

    1. Is about $1500 to $2000 but when you look at what it cost to start most businesses, not bad. Not like opening up a diner or clothing shop.
    2. There are plenty of adult/porn based servers or hosting companies.
    3. Marketing & traffic is a major issue but we all learn along the way.

I think every human being no matter what business they are in should have a website. Or at least purchase the domain name. Yours is currently available btw. But you don't have to do a paysite if you don't want to. You can sell individual downloads instead or do both. It's up to you. We have so many different options when it comes to how we sell our content. Services like IndieBill and webstream make it easy to host and sell content. You can put a website together and then link to the payment pages that host the actual videos.

^^^^ She is right about the domain. I bought mine before filming my 1st video or paid porn shoot. You can always point it at your clip store until you get something built out.

You can go to Godaddy.com and for about $22 buy it for one year with protection to hide who bought it. Don't let your boyfriend, husband or future webmaster do it. YOU Do it & YOU own it.

Owning your own domain is the most important 1st step into this industry, whether you use it or not.

I guess some don't know or don't do enough research. Some just go to where everyone is, one example is onlyfans, it caught on with pornstars/camgirls etc. like wildfire, wow.
Everything that these guys offer you can do it on your own. There's even a twitter like theme for wordpress. I even used zencart & os commerce back in 2008 to sell downloads. There's also elevatedx, porncms, xmember or you can go 90's style basic html. The resources are so multiple.
Some content producers don't want to pay the $1,000 visa/mc yearly fee but it's a small amount compared to the potential earnings. You can even get your own merchant account and pay 5-9% per transaction compared to these guys' 40%.

Please tell me what billing company charges that little of a percentage for a porn site?

If its a matter of a good investment, why doesn't anyone do it? I know maybe one or two people who have their own site and merchant account, but they also used that to be a site for other people as well. They just don't know any better or don't do research?

Marketing your own clip site is where most of your investment will go. Getting your site ranked in the search engines is a long haul time and/or money investment. Backlinking adult sites is a bit easier then vanilla sites because you’re limited to adult friendly link exchanges and non follow back links. The clip sites that take a percentage already have aged and established backlinks and marketing programs that rank them very high in keyword searches. They are also always freshly updated because of the sheer amount of content updates that search engine spiders love.

In the end, you’ll probably end up spending the percentage in overhead expenses, (SEO, AdWords, listings, backlink building etc.), versus just uploading to an established clip site. If you have the patience and don’t mind delaying payback gratification for a year then go for it.

There're very specific downsides to running your own clip or paysite if you're based in the UK.

I don't want to go into a lot of specifics because I'm not a lawyer, but basically since 2014 they've been new laws to do with censor authority licensing, VAT record keeping, and now also age verification, that makes the admin burden potentially more costly to keep up with than your turnover. Hosting content on platforms by and large off-loads these issues to the platforms, who can handle it because of their size.

It's bad enough that several little studios I used to shoot clips for have either moved their operation to other countries, sold up, or are planning to close up shop.

I think every model should have their own website. As others have said purchase your domain before you do anything else then think about exactly what you want from a site. Do you want somewhere to put your cam links, have a clip store, write blog posts or do you want ecomerse sections? Think about exactly what you want from your site, your branding then have a look at your options. There is a million and one things you can do with a site so have a play around and go from there.

Thank you so much for your input ladies!
I went ahead and bought my domain name like a lot of you said. I rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. I'm going to focus on making content and establishing myself on clip sites for now. You all brought up some great points and truth be told, I have a lot of learning to do before I venture out into having my own site. I can see myself having a website waaayyyy down the line, but for right now I'm gonna focus on these great adult platforms.
    Thanks again!
