Boston is safest? I'm there all the time and I don't see that. Maybe certain parts. Boston isn't even as safe as LA.

I'm from NH. Boston was a 40 minute drive from the house, but I never went there. Why? Because the place is terrifying! So many bad neighborhoods, mob run businesses, and general shadiness. And that's just in the city. Don't get me started on the metropolitan area..

I agree with the "worst" list. (My brother & I have traveled a lot for work in the past decade & the "worst" list lines up with a lot of things he and I noticed about certain cities.)

Side note- Minneapolis can be very sketch at night especially in the summer. I love that city but be aware of that if you visit.

I think New York City is one of the safest, or the safest big city.

Can anybody weigh in on New Orleans? I saw on reddit people say it hasn't really recovered from the hurricane 12 years ago.

Check out the club chat, NOLA threads, it says it all..^

I think Chicago's dangerous, depending of which section you're in. Me personally, I don't go to the city a lot, mostly in the burbs. But, some of those are bad too.
I think a lot (most?) big cities are dangerous.

I wonder how they came up with Grand Rapids as the second safest city?

Also, is there a link to the Press Release that is mentioned in the OP.

All big cities are dangerous. Some areas are safer, some areas are no-go zone. If you think Boston is safe, think again.

Grand Rapids definitely should NOT be on the safe list. That city is scary as hell! It's not quite as scary as Detoilet, I mean Detroit but still. Trust me on this. I grew up all over Michigan.

    That's for sure.
Was born and raised in the Boston area.
L.A. Was a cakewalk compared to beantown.
I remember when I first moved to LA, I'd make sure not to look at anyone too long. ( Cause in Boston you'd get your ass kicked for doing that.) Lol!
But, it did leave me hyper aware of my surroundings, though. One would even say paranoid.
But that paranoia has served me well, cause I'm still alive to talk about it.

As far as Saint Louis goes, within the city limits is can get pretty frightening. The suburbs are pretty safe, however. Most of the Clubs are on the eastern side of the river, and those areas are pretty bad.

I think the thing with la is that everyone looks at everyone all the time. I see the stares wane away as soon as I'm no longer there.

As far as NOLA, I know that I walked to my hotel, along Bourbon St at odd hours while staying in the city and was fine. I've also done some walking outside of the Quarter when I was there for a conference. I didn't notice anything too bad, except extreme drunkenness. I think I walked passed one guy covered in blood one time, and the emts were there, but I didn't really stick around to figure out why.

While on a tourist tour, the guide mentioned how NOLA is #1 in the country for missing persons reported. So there is that...

The reason nyc is 'safe' is bc the police don't record incidents of crime in order to artificially keep the crime stats low on paper. You can read about this on the internet. I think it's actually true. Otherwise, it may simply be a low ratio, of crimes per person, to produce a low rate but not necessarily a low number of crime, especially considering the number of ppl.

Not sure about the other cities. I spent time in Baltimore a very long time ago, and it was very very scary. I've never seen the looks on peoples faces as I've seen in Baltimore.

^ Oh man, I had a layover in Baltimore once and I remember it was terrifying. Even in the airport people looked like they'd kill you for looking at them funny.

In Boston, the areas like Roxbury, Dorchester, Hyde Park, South End... you don't want to be there at night. Even in the center of Boston, Chinatown, things can go bad quickly.

NYC, I consider it is worse than Boston. If I have to choose a place to live, I wouldn't choose NYC.

NOLA, I used to tour there. spent a few weeks at French corner. All the tourists, gangs, homeless people, if I get killed there, nobody would notice. That place is a scary version of a spring break.

NYC is unaffordable, unless you have a very high income.

    Everyones list is different

Boston is a large dense city, and in that category is one of the safest.

If you are scared of Boston in this day and age, you really need to get out more. Sure if you hang out in Roxbury at 3AM it might be interesting.....

Interestingly, NYC is one of the safest cities among real cities.

    The columns sort

Places can look safe on a list, but pay attention to density,

Lots of places seem ok, but they are really small states[think Housto]

I think the worst parts of Boston arent actually in Boston proper. You've got Lynn, the city of sin, Brockton, Roxbury, Dorchester, etc. Yah, of you hang around Harvard or the. Touristy area, it's great. But there's a lot of spots you should avoid.

I was just in Cambridge, and I have another engagement there at a well known university :-) in a few weeks. It is safe but has a chaotic vibe outside of the square. That little area where the starbucks is next to the T stop I watched 3 "disturbed" people carted off in ambulances in the space of one hour. Mass is great in that way, the police were way more respectful than the EMTs. If you walk North it can get interesting quickly.

Well, roxbury and dorchester are , in fact, Boston.

I lived in Lynn when crime was much higher than now, and you could sleep on the sidewalk.

Brockton has gone way downhill, it used to be just a blue collar city, but has not kept up with crime prevention

Boston is a very safe city.

I do not know what criteria qualifies as a "large" city. PVD has a population of less than 200K and so does Grand Rapids. Also, as someone mentioned in another post police officers in NYC do not take down reports so their stats stay low. I am sure they are not the only ones.

Where is Chicago on that list? I think these are all small to medium sized cities.

I found an article that called Fort Lauderdale the most dangerous city on the country and I am never scared here.
