What would the world look like if there were no such thing as monogamy and marriage?

I don't think that kind of society would last for very long. As much as I've grown to disagree with monogamy for me personally, I understand that for the vast majority of people, it's necessary. I look at it in a similar way as I look at religion. Back when things were lawless, and people required some sort of social construct (beyond their own morality), religion provided a guiding set of principles that they could follow. Thou shall not kill, while obvious to some nowadays, was not so obvious back when the ten commandments were first popularized. Back then, if you wanted something, you took it. You killed whoever you needed to, and it became yours. Well, now there were consequences beyond the mortal plane that helped those with an immature internal compass to realize what was right and what was wrong. Religion was vital to creating a society wherein people could cohabitate with similar principles.

Marriage grew from that. Sure, people have always drawn together in pairs, but the religious idea of marriage and monogamy provided structure to it. There's a reason that we call successful couples faithful. For many, having someone to pledge themselves to assists with controlling the baser urges of humanity. Even when the excitement is gone, which any married couple can assure will happen, the faith in the social construct of marriage remains. This almost forces a couple, who previously would have split up and gone their separate ways, to stay together and work through their issues. Benefits from this are largely within the familial unit, as a couple that stays together raises children together, pursues success together, retires together, and eventually dies together. This has numerous socio-economic impacts on those around them, let alone their own family.

If that construct had never developed, I don't think the world would be as evolved as it is now. We would have different ideals about what a family is. And, as much as I hate to admit this, I think women would be in a much lesser place in the world. By their nature, men are stronger than women (genetically anyways). Men also have primal urges and a distinct lack of self-control that the concept of marriage helps to quell, or at least hide. Devoid of the idea of monogamy, men would take what and who they want, leading to more conflict, and a less developed society.

Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, and this is all hypothetical anyways. Some people can control themselves without requiring marriage. Though, it is curious to wonder if that's because of who they are genetically, or if its because they've grown up in a society with morals shaped by religious ideas of monogamy and faithfulness.. Would I be who I am if my parents had not stayed married throughout my childhood, despite their desire to get divorced? They ended up finding their love again and are still together to this day. Their relationship undoubtedly shaped who I am, and they raised me to be a kind man wo values everyone equally. I personally don't think monogamy is a good fit for me, despite (or perhaps because of) being married right now. If/when I'm single again, I don't think I will revert back to primal man, clubbing anyone I'm attracted to over the head and dragging them back to my man-cave. Is that because of how society is now, or because we as humans have simply evolved beyond those urges? I don't know..
