Considering the long term risks of clinical depression..it can't hurt...

    Better that than a lobotomy

This is what it comes down to, really.

I've known so many people with clinical depression & the risks of that illness range from ruining your family (by not being present for them) to just missing out on your entire lifetime because your mind cannot be in the driver's seat.

ECT does have side effects but IMO the alternative to me sounds worse.

I've had two courses of ECT over the past few years and while I'm not completely "cured" , I'm much better in terms of not desperately wanting to kill myself/ not feeling utterly hopeless/no longer hallucinating.
It was the only thing that worked as I was deemed treatment resistant. I'd get it again if necessary.
The main annoying issue is memory loss. Years of my life were just wiped out but I was severely depressed so you could say that's a good thing? Maybe.

Not to minimize memory loss side effect but.....

Our memories aren't that great as time goes on anyways. It's one of the reasons eyewitness testimony is not reliable.

It's best to document EVERYTHING. Keep a video camera rolling, write in a journal, take pictures, etc.

Very interesting. They said ECT works by the electricity causing the brain to release all of its neurotransmitters. Essentially, it's like hard rebooting the brain. The patient then wakes up and feels renewed. The memory loss is unfortunate, however. They said it's usually recent memories around the time the patient is administered the ECT. Either way though, I'm glad to hear this treatment exists, and it seems to work for some people. I'm curious about experiments combining other treatments with this.

In tests, using magnets instead of electric shock had the same benefits without the memory loss. If you need more treatment, maybe you can look into this.

Fingers crossed that I won't have to go there again, but it's definitely something I would look into trying. Once it is well tested and also offered in the UK.

^ Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation...it is available in the UK, but would most likely need to be done privately as it is early days - it's only being used in a very small number of NHS Trusts (2 that I'm aware of).

There's that and there is also treatment being done with intravenous Ketamine.

I personally don't like the idea of an induced seizure. There are a million alternatives you could try before turning to shock therapy. I'd try psilocybin or even ayahuasca before trying this. Ayahuasca has been scientifically shown to be an effective treatment for depression and it has cured addictions. You are under the supervision of a shaman and in a controlled setting. Many ayahuasca retreats are even luxurious. Check out the work of Michael Pollan. Psychedelics are natural and studies have shown that they are often effective treatments for depression and anxiety, minus the dangers of prescription drugs. I can see the value in this treatment, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

Electric shock therapy is generally used when other treatments don't work.

I have to agree with eagle. I’ve tried every treatment on the damn planet (it feels like). I’ve even taken Wellbutrin- which ended up with me being in the hospital because it gave me a seizure. I have and am seriously considering electrical treatments.

However on TFK’s note- I have had some minor success with psibocylin(sp?) and also Kratom when microdosing.

I think that if the depression is sever enough, the risks heavily outweigh the benefits. Depression can truly destroy your life.
