I don't think that porn is the reason for school shootings. Why is no blame placed on the parents or parental figures of these children who become shooters? I think that the destruction of the family plays a major role. Many kids are growing up in broken homes with struggling single moms, deadbeat dads, families broken up by divorce, no structure or anyone teaching them or setting a good example. The traditional family structure of the 1950's with a happy stay at home mom whose only job was to take care of her kids, husband, and the home isn't reality anymore. More and more single moms are having to work several jobs just to support her family, leaving little time for her kids. Kids are feeling neglected and like no one cares for them and becoming angry, sad, or depressed. Kids unsupervised will give in to peer pressure and want to try to fit in somewhere that they feel loved and accepted, to make up for the void that they feel at home. That's why some kids get involved with gangs, because they feel a sense of family and belonging there. On top of it mental illness such as depression and anxiety has increased among people. It can be situational due to poverty and the stress that comes with that but it can also be genetic as well. Since there's so much stigma towards mental illness many people might not seek the help that they need. They could be too focused on making money just to survive that they don't see the signs in their own children. Video games have become more violent. Movies have become violent. Tv shows are violent too. All of those mediums are desensitizing our children to violence. Violent porn doesn't help either but I do not think that it is the sole reason for school shootings.

Over the past 23 years, since internet porn became widespread, sexual assault in the US has decreased 44%. There have also been studies done in other countries where porn was once illegal, and after porn became legal, incidences of rape decreased, not increased. Not only did incidences of rape decrease, but so did child sexual abuse.
I hate to be "that bitch" but it has to be said: correlation does not imply causation.

For example, is widespread porn the one and only change in sex and relations that has happened for the past 20 or so years? This attitude towards science is downright offensive. Especially in these times you have to think about proper research and question what is flawed, now this is not that serious because it's just a forum discussion but even in serious debates people do these mistakes all the time (just look at the title of this thread) which is why I even bother to comment now.

I don't believe in demonising porn, it's much more complex than that, but the logical fallacies you throw out are not helping either, it's just counterproductive shooting yourself and actual scientific approach in the foot.

Porn was widespread in print form in the 1970s-80s and school shootings were not a thing then.

IMO people (rightfully so) are so taken aback by the school shooting problem they are looking for any explanation or possible solution. It sucks when your worst fear about your school day (as an American student) goes from being bullied or being humiliated to being shot to death.

Legislators need reform but they can't keep pointing fingers at issues that aren't related to the problem at hand. This broad is mad her husband most likely watching porn instead of her so she has a personal axe to grind against porn.

It's not a logical fallacy. Just stating "correlation does not imply causation" doesn't disprove that easier access to pornography reduces sexual assault and rape. Did you read the article I linked to? There have been multiple studies in multiple countries, including the Czech Republic, Denmark, Japan, China, and Hong Kong; and each of these studies have shown that after pornography became legal and more widespread, incidences of sexual assault and rape decreased. That doesn't mean we can say with absolute certainty that pornography is the main reason or only reason why incidences of rape and sexual assault decreased in these countries, but the strong correlation between the two means there is a good chance that it was a factor or major factor.

Although my dad was absent and I had a good mother there are plenty of dead beat mothers too. As far as the traditional family structure in the 50s it wasn't as perfect as the pictures and stories make it out to be.

Back in those days people stayed together out of fear of public backlash and many women were battered and routinely being abused and beat with no recourse or money to get away. Children in those days also were abused and sexually molested so they often ran away to the streets to only be abused and beat again by somebody in the streets or by a priest in the church who were supposed to help them.

Things are much better now but yes some aspects of American life are worse...

There are deadbeat mothers (plenty of stories of moms abandoning newborns n shit) but if you look at statistics of the unpaid child support DEBT for every state I will guarantee the vast majority of obligers are MEN.

People have to learn if you lay down do adult activities you need to be responsible to the kids you bring into the world or else it is highly possible they turn into little menaces to society.

A lot of parents are quick to separate the family for dumb reasons and lack the maturity to co-parent peacefully or get family therapy.

One way to support kids and help them have better lives is financially. I bet if these kids who were shooting up schools had someone invest in a healthy sport / extracurricular, invest in some therapy, and spend some time with them it may have helped prevent this. Heck even if they liked shooting shit - there is paintball, lazer tag, even sport trap shooting so you're not really killing anything. Keep them from viewing adult materials as long as possible and explain to them healthy sexuality in an age appropriate manner.
