Default How long did it take you to lift yourself on a pole?

    Hey guys,

I'm new to dancing and having so much trouble doing a basic climb because of my arms.. Just out of curiosity, how long did it take you to get your climbs and chair sits?
    Tacky, yet refined.

Climbing is all in the legs!! You wrap one lower leg in front, and one behind, trapping the pole between the lower part of your thighs, and fucking SQUEEEEEZE while pushing up WITH your legs. Your arms help a bit, sure.

Another drill you can do is to grab on, jump up until your arms are bent, and let yourself down using your arms as slowly as you can. These are called "let downs"; it's like a pull-up but in reverse.

I can't remember how long it took me. I had been doing other aerial arts like trapeze etc before that, so pole was an easier transition. I also took a pole class and it was a few classes before I felt ok at climbing.

Just keep doing it! It's also a lot of core.

    When did you start?

Yes, this is it! You can learn to climb easily even if you don't have a lot of upper arm strength. Here is the actual video I used to learn, after about 1 month in:

I was getting frustrated that I couldn't seem to climb, until I saw the video. Within one day of watching the tutorial I was up the pole.

Wow, thanks for the video. Not a dancer here, but I was planning to seriously work out during some pole fitness sessions later this year, I so much hate running and jogging.

It took me about three months to climb the pole, but I wasn't working very hard at it. Missharley, you're in New Orleans, right? I HIGHLY recommend Awakenings on Canal Street if you're interested in taking pole classes. It's a dancer-owned pole studio--a lot of dancers and former dancers train there. I've improved so much since I started going regularly.

It is all in the legs. I could climb the pole from day 1 but no I didn't know pole tricks then. It comes with time for most and pole doesn't matter a lot at many clubs. What matters more at most clubs is ability to sell. That being said, pole can help in some clubs with certain customers that value that kinda thing. Like recently it helped me sell a half hour to a marine who just got back from his deployment to the middle East. Some demographics do value athleticism LOL

I know some tricks and I wouldn't recommend paying for classes unless you are trying to do more advanced or dangerous things. There are so many free online resources regarding pole. Most clubs you can practice on the pole when it is dead, or you might be able to practice before customers come in. You can also buy a pole to practice on at home if you don't want to learn at the club.

I started dancing in November and I recently got to be able to climb the pole (Late may-early June). I also got to accomplish climbing the pole that goes up to the second floor!

I successfully climbed on my first attempt. I was probably in my second or third week as a newbie. It's very easy. It is more about your legs, unless you're on a spinning pole then arm strength is helpful.
