    Default Bag Searches

Is it legal for club staff to search your bargs? My lawyer friend said it is but Im skeptical. If its so legal, why doesnt every club do it. Sapphire Nyc on 60th would do this upon us entering the dressing room. Then they started doing this prior to letting us leave after working. We'd all be stuck in this tiny dressing room after working a full shift, exhausted after 4am and managemen and staff going through our bags bc allegedly someone stole something. Is this legal? Doesn't one have the right to consent to bag searches, rather than have it as a pre-condition to being allowed to go home?

they do this at some clubs here upon entering, i'm assuming to see if we are bringing weapons, liquor or drugs. but before leaving? i would feel super violated.

I actually got searched at a bar, (well the bouncer asked me to open my bag & I did). But I don't/didn't know why..

I've never heard of it happening out here. There's no excuse for it really and it wouldn't go over well. The most a few clubs do is a metal detector on customers.

In theft cases, there's usually cameras all over. Very easy for management to find the thief.

    Also curious the legality though...

I doubt it's legal, like many other questionable things clubs do but they get away with it because if you don't comply you can't work.

Their defense would be "well if you have nothing to hide..." or something like that.

Clubs around here don't do mandatory bag searches but the paperwork says management has the right to search bag/locker if they suspect you have drugs/other illegal stuff. It doesn't happen often cause you have to be pretty obviously messed up before management is going to take the time to deal with that.

I comply with it b/c I don't work in bars with overt "extra" sales activity.

However as far as it concerns an IC, if they found anything I don't think they'd report you.

My guess is it's probably illegal to do but if you comply it's for your best interest. & Let's be honest, there are strip club workers who would sneak in items to enable a robbery of a bar. We all know this.....

Now I am wondering what the answer to this is.. I worked at a club in FL that did this at the end of the shift when this girl was flipping out cause something (can't remember what) was missing and they searched all of our bags. She had it the whole time....
