Thumbs down Dealing with a long-term earnings slump.

Hey y’all, I’m looking for advice on how to turn a long-term slump around. I got back to mainland almost three weeks ago and I’ve been working almost constantly since I got back (took three days off earlier this week) and I’ve been leaving with less than $100 every night, usually less than $30. I’ve had some financial emergencies recently so my savings is depleated and I can’t afford to take a break to help with burnout. A medical emergency also left me in some debt last month. I’ve never had a slump this bad before, and the whole thing is just one giant feedback loop, since taking time off would obviously help with the burnout. I’ve tried all the usual advice— switching up clubs and shifts, outfit styles, trying my best to stay really positive all shift, but it’s hitting me hard.

i know we all experience something like this inevitably, but it’s really starting to mess with my head. I’ve been near-tears in frustration at least several times a shift for the past three days in a row. Please share any and all advice.

Can you travel to a different city? Like just get a Megabus ticket and couchsurf and work day and night somewhere where there's actually money to be made? Season hasn't kicked in where I live and that's what some girls are doing here.

I’m currently in Pdx. I was thinking about trying to go to Montana for a week, but right now I can’t justify taking a gamble on the overhead costs like that. If things are still bad, I’ll have financially screwed myself out of money I could have sent towards my medical debt. Even though things are a little slow here rn, I know most dancers aren’t doing as poorly as I am. Right now I feel like it’s a combo of end of the summer slowtimes + my own mental block towards getting out of this that’s the problem.

Why are you worried about medical debt? When I went through my recovery I just paid food, water, and shelter. I settled my debt for half of what I owed when I had the money and I wasn’t in crisis? That’s what Dave Ramsey said to do and it work for me. Speaking of I need to do my irregular income budget tonight...sigh. I’ve been battling depression hard core too. One day at a time.

Sorry, I don’t feel like explaining the extent of my medical stuff and how it’s affected me financially right now and I don’t really owe you that explanation. It’s also not at all related to my original question about how to recover from a work slump when you can’t take time off work to deal with burnout.

That being said, I really hope you’re doing okay with your depression. I’m sorry it’s been affecting you, and you’re right that it is one day at a time. Please keep up the fight, you’re not alone. <3

Okay, I was just thinking if you weren’t stressed over medical debt you could just baby step it and maybe you wouldnt be stressed and you’d do better at work because your not stressed. Sorry was just trying to be helpful. I’ll just mind my own business. Sorry.

I appreciate you and I appreciate you trying to help. Medical debt is not my only financial (or life) stress right now and I was trying to stress that focusing on that wasn’t my intention in this post. Again, I appreciate your advice and I hope you’re well.

girlllll i am going thru this right now and it sucks i went from making consistent money that took care of all my bills plus i had savings then i stopped making money and my savings disappeared. i didn't understand why i was paying to go get naked out of my pocket. i eventually got a job at a resort bartending so im doing that full time and it sucks i hate schedules and am so used to going in when i want but i always wanted to bartend so this is just an experience for me and dancing is something i can always go back to. try to work on hobbies, try a regular job for a while , try something you always wanted to do and try again in a little while change locations and work on your mindset because you wont be worth shit at work if ur mind isnt right goodluck

I'm thinking that this is a case of customers being able to sense that you really need the money. It happens to all of us but the results are usually the same. It's often a huge turn off and we end up making very little money... just when we need it the most.

The only things that have gotten me out of a slump like this is by visiting a new club/ working somewhere that I haven't worked in a while or finding some way to leave my stress at the door. I usually daydream about what a stress free life would look and feel like while I'm getting ready and driving to work. When I'm doing a stage, I imagine that I'm dancing for somebody really incredibly attractive and he's the only one watching. Anything to get myself completely in the moment and in the fantasy that I'm selling. Everybody's different as to what will help them leave real life at the door, but find it and use it. Once you start to come out of this rut, your success and progress will help to keep your spirits up.

I hope things start looking up for you soon.

Erg I hate this. This is such a total thing. This was me trying to save money to move out of my hometown. I don't know what I did. Tbh I think I just quit dancing for a month and flipped cars. I say "I think" because I was drinking so heavily back then that my memory of all of 2011 is hazy at best. I don't have any good advice. I'm sorry you're going through this. It's the pits.

I got similar advice from a Vegas old timer.

I was going to add- change up your look each shift. It might draw attention from club regulars who have been checking you out for a while, and will "re-boot" your mind.

I literally get in this slump so easily. I dont always have the confidence i need and im always so anxious i look like i did a whole 8 ball by myself at times (i dont know if thats actually something someone can do, i dont know much about it) all it takes is one bad night at a club and i will literally not make money and beat myself up about it.
Thats why i dance on and off and try really hard to work as little as possible (im always broke so its almost impossible)

What has worked for me has been to try a different club, and i try different types of clubs. I loved hostess clubs for a min but my anxiety got too bad i had to take a break. Idk if there are any where you are or any type of peepshow or something a little bit different than a standard strip club but sometimes the change of pace and getting used to something new is enough to overpower the weird “im in a slump and sort of freaking out” vibe that somehow the guys feel and are turned off by.
Another thing at least for me since this is a frequent things for me is to not make my life revolve around stripping. I dont want to hang out with the girls. I dont even give the guys a text app number. I work the slow days at weird times when i know ill be the youngest looking cutest one there and do like one weekend night. I am nice to everyone i work with but they never know my real name. I dont gossip or complain even if i want to and these sound like common sense things we all like to pretend we do but it made such a difference for me. There can be so much negativity in clubs between co workers bc the nature of the job gets people sensitive and vulnerable so removing as much extra stress from yourself as hard as it can be to want to get your nails done with one of the girls or complain with another girl and if your social it can be hard at first but after a while people will respect you for seeming so positive and never having drama that they stop bringing there drama towards you. It sounds so silly while im typing this but i swear negativity of any kind hanging on you at the club is the number one cause of broke strippers. Its impossible to eliminate all of it but eliminate as much as possible before it can come youre way

I know you said you've tried switching up outfit styles... This works for me sometimes. As soon as I make money something happens in my head where I think it was the change in my look. Then I go on a streak with that look until I feel I need to change it again. It's all in my head but it's like a refresh on my attitude. Maybe try reversing your whole hustle.. I will usually start hustling after my first stage set. If I switch it up, I hustle the floor first then get to the stage.

Another thing that helps me - I try to remind myself that while I'm sitting here stressed, in the dressing room, sitting down, and distracted by my mood other girls are making money that could have been mine. It helps when I see other girls killing it. It's like, "wow, okay. That guy had money for a dance and it could have been in your pocket.".

Hopefully your slump is long gone when you're reading this!
