Default How do you guys overcome a little anxiety before starting your shift?

My first job at a strip club was as a server when I was 20. Now I'm 36. Spent the majority of my working career working in the clubs. I deal with a bit of anxiety and depression from time to time. To help me overcome anxiety before starting my shift, I may take half of an adderal, once in a while I'll take a shot of vodka or something or I'll do a couple of bumps of cocaine. If I'm eating a regular customer when my shift starts then usually I won't do anything about it. And a lot of times I'll just work through it and usually it'll go away after a little while. But I find that a bump or two does the trick for me.

What do you guys do to help overcome any anxiety you might get?

Breathe deeply. Also I try focusing on myself instead of others around me... coworkers/customers included..

You say you’ve been working at clubs for 16 years but still feel the need to use illegal drugs to get through your shifts? If you’ve been in clubs for that long and still can’t get over your anxiety over being in that environment, then you need to consider retiring and looking for a new career. This isn’t the environment for you! Honestly though, this is a problem found commonly in newbie strippers and strip club servers, not ones who say they’ve been doing it for 16 years...I’m having trouble taking your post seriously especially with all the explicit drug talk!

If I'm feeling anxious, I don't try to hustle anyone until after my first stage set. I feel more warmed up, loose, ready and "on" as a stripper after I dance, and sometimes I'll know who to approach based on how they act during my set. But I love being on stage and consider it my safe place; that might not be true for everyone.

This is me too. I'll be present on the floor before my set and occasionally sell dances based on customers walking up or spotting a regular/getting waved over/whatever but I don't typically actively hustle until after I've done a show. It definitely helps make it easier to determine who to approach, i.e. who tipped? who made eye contact the whole show? etc

Except in clubs where I'm wayyyyy down the list so it'd be silly.

who tf does uppers to RELIEVE anxiety?! SURELY you are a cop LMAO! no fr tho please take care of yourself hon, if you are truly relying upon stimulants to RELIEVE your anxiety this is a sign that you've become dependent upon them. they don't usually naturally relieve anxiety. speaking as a former not-sober person. but now I am sober. I don't even drink coffee or pop anymore. the closest thing I get to a Good Time anymore is a trip to the vape store.

for me, relieving anxiety is usually to do with the physical experience of dancing (I have chronic pain and dancing is hard work) so I drink lots of water and remind myself that I'm doing OK and that pain is just pain. sometimes I get anxious if there's a big crowd (I'm a total day shift girl) and it helps to find a customer I'm vibing with and have nice one-on-one conversations with. before a shift, if I feel anxious, I take a nice comfy shower to an empowering album. female-fronted punk rock or alt country or R&B/hip-hop usually does it for me.

this was my thought. tbh they either really earnestly have a problem or are Houston-based LE.

I'm surprised by the lack of support in this thread. Even if the OP is trolling (which doesn't seem to be the case IMO), her question is legitimate.

Might be the coke/drugs itself is giving you anxiety??

If you're eating your customers i'm afraid your dealer might have laced your coke with bath salts my friend.

Back on topic when I worked at a completely soul-less corporate restaurant, I would take several minutes to steel myself (usually in my car) for the wave of BS I would deal with for a shift.

Tapping on your upper chest and wearing a heavy pendant helps too.

& Stop with using caffeine or other stimulants, they usually make anxiety/nerves worse.

edit to add- are you getting a full night's rest before your bar shifts? That matters a lot too

Just because I've been on the club's most of my working career, doesn't mean I still don't get anxiety. And what difference does it make if I openly talk about doing a bump here and there help be more sociable. I don't deny to anyone that I do a bump here and there for the fun of it.

I'm a Libertarian. I don't care what you do with your body because you are an adult, cognizant of your choices and the consequences. That being said, I would consider doing your recreational narcotics BEFORE work because of the threat of LE.
I don't get anxiety much. I go to the gym before work or smoke a blunt if I absolutely have to. ( Although I have had a long standing prohibition against being high at work)

With regards to the nose candy, OP I did cocaine for YEARS at work. It didn't really help me and coming down from a coke high is a BITCH.
These days I'm sober. Not for any high minded moral reason, but sheer paranoia. Most cocaine is cut with a veterinary drug used to treat ringworm in cattle. It causes flesh rot in humans.

Stripping, like business, is a power trip for me. I focus on the bottom line. What is my goal, not just today, tonight, but for the week, the month and the year. Where am I and given where I am, what do I need to do. That usually focuses me for the day or night ahead.

BTW, the original question is a legit one, even if the poster is sketchy.

I used to have the same mentality regarding coke, and it was fear that saved me. I'm now too afraid of having a heart attack or getting something laced with fentanyl to even think about snorting a line. I realized that it made me feel more confident and put me into a better mood in general. For whatever reason, I never got addicted or began to use it outside the club. It sounds like your relationship with it is similar to how I used to be. It makes you feel good and helps you focus. But there are ways to achieve that effect without the drugs. I really pep myself up before my shift and I enjoy the process. I like to take my time and do my hair and makeup to perfection, I like to pick out accessories and outfits, I listen to music that makes me feel sexy and puts me in a good mood, I use positive affirmations and visualize how I'd like my shift to go. It helps me to do yoga and meditate before my shift (you might be rolling your eyes at this suggestion but try it before you knock it).

Once I'm at the club I try to get that first dance as soon as possible. Once I've got 3 or so dances under my belt and I do a stage set, I'm in "stripper mode" and the rest of the night flows smoothly. I don't think there's anything wrong with having a shot or two while working, as long as you don't make it a daily habit.

Another technique that helps me with my anxiety is called "breath of fire" which is a breathing technique practiced in yoga. When you feel panic set in you begin to quickly breathe in and out in short breaths as if you were hyperventilating. You're tricking your brain by leaning into the anxiety and burning through the reaction rather than trying to suppress it. Once your body exhausts the panic, you'll be able to breathe normally. When you're anxious you'll find that you aren't breathing at a relaxed, steady pace.

Cocaine is almost quaint these days.
In my experience the current drug du jour among strippers is rabid liberal feminism, which I am proud to say that I have never partaken in.

I always drank vodka (small amounts) just to take the edge off honestly. Worked like a charm & guess what?! Contrary to popular belief , I actually didn't develop any sort of drinking problem from it

Buy the little mini shooters and stash em in your purse. Pace yourself. Oh and CBD oil is awsome. (Not that I've ever done any of this in my career as a stripper)

Going sober a month ago was a compete life-changer. I suggest you try it! You'll have more energy than ever.

Smoke a little bit of sativa, do a gentle yoga practice, and hop in the shower while playing meditation music. When I get out of the shower I usually have either a small meal or a snack, drink some tea, and I feel pretty damned chill and ready to put my makeup on to go.
