If you are going through insurance, HELL no. It is no longer confidential. Research it. I will take my past choices to the grave even with therapists unless I paid out of pocket.

I have one a told and one I didn't ( but would have as we got going more ).

I was scared to tell the older one ( first one ) but the most she said about it was " it's hard to give up a job that is good money ".

I have told mine, present one is totally good with it and actively encourages me to get into my hustle mode. I had another who was way more judgemental. I feel like if it is a big part of your life you shouldn't hide it from the person who is attempting to help you grow to be your best self. You also shouldn't stay with a therapist who isn't accepting but insurance does make that difficult, thank god I self pay now.

Research it where? I would be interested to read up on this more. HIPPA is still HIPPA regardless of whether the patient is a sex worker.

    Depends.

Most likely no. Some shit you just take to the grave.

Anytime you say something, mfs writing that shit down and keeping files n records b shit. Yes there is hippa and confidently laws however there is a limit to both and info can still be shared without your permission

But if you’re already out then carry on.

HIPPA does not -legally- go out the window just because some therapist has a judgmental stick up their bum. https://www.hhs.gov/hipaa/for-profes...als/index.html

Recourse for HIPAA violations https://www.thehealthlawfirm.com/res...entiality.html Although this link is specific to Florida, I would think all states have some variation of this.

I mean they share the info with the insurance providers, law enforcement (if you’re doing or going to do something illegal), etc.

Ex. “Hey I’m an escort and I want to kill my annoying clients” said out of frustration but 1. Person admitted to illegal work activities and 2. Person admitted to homicidal tendencies both admissions likely requiring breach of confidentiality

Basically if you chose to share info read/understand ALL the fine print

I’ll check out the links you provided

I've talked about being a stripper with my therapists. She applauded how I treat it like a business and how methodical I am in my sales approaches. She wasn't against it, and it was nice to have someone to be open with it about. Occasionally she made ignorant comments, "Wow, you get ALL THE WAY naked on stage?! I could NEVER do that! Wow!" and that wasn't appreciated but I overlooked it. If I was an escort or doing anything that fell into a grey area of law, I wouldn't talk about it personally, out of paranoia. Therapy is a great resource and it is nice to have something of a support system if you can't rely on friends and family.

Barring a court order, a shrink is not permitted to disclose any information to the police apart from abuse/neglect or if the patient is a danger to themselves or other people. According to the above article, insurance is notified of diagnoses and treatment plans to determine what will be covered, and they are also bound by HIPAA. If you have insurance but choose to pay out of pocket for your treatment, your insurance is typically not notified.

Now, I am very wary of going to a therapist for mental-health related anything, because I have been involuntarily committed before and I have never gotten over that paranoia of 'Say the wrong thing even in passing and they will be ringing the guys with the butterfly nets'

I am not unsympathetic to the concerns of discussing this industry with a therapist. I also respect I don't have to worry (too much anyway) about the possible legal pitfalls of discussing it in therapy because I have only danced, and dancing's legal, albeit grey. But the implication that HIPAA protections don't apply to sex workers because of real or imagined (on the part of the therapist) legal/moral standards is false, and there is recourse for violations of those protections.

There are sex worker friendly therapists. If you do some searches, you might be able to find one. Here's one page with a few listed on it.

I think we are saying similar things and this right here (bolded) is exactly what I mean....

Im not necessarily implying HIPPA laws don't apply to people in adult industry but stating that there are requirements to auto-report to third parties when certain types of information is revealed. The links you posted are very helpful sources of information.

You never know when you find yourself in the middle of litigation and your mental health/medical records being requested by some sort of law enforcement (ex. people who have sued others for passing incurable STD's). Or a person happens to say something not realizing the gravity of what they're saying.

Me personally, if I were in an adult industry career (especially the illegal adult careers) and or engaged in activities the law deemed illegal, I would be very very reluctant to disclose on the record but at the end of the day I suppose my health (physical and mental is more important that pride/ego)

I do recall reading a known escorts book and she basically said she went to doctors who were not judgmental about people who worked in adult industry and she paid out of pocket cash and without using insurance. Because of not using insurance, I am guessing she did not give her real name Idk.

Agree on all counts, including the part you had bolded.

I was a little hesitant to post that last piece, simply because I was worried it would look as if I was trying to have a go at you. I apologise if it came across that way.

My therapist is coincidentally a sex therapists so she LOVED when I confessed I’m in the skin biz. She even encouraged me to look into sex surrogacy since my passion includes being a helper.

    Pretty cool.

Honestly a lot of people with "vanilla" careers can't help but share opinions or ask questions when they meet dancers. I had an insurance agent wanting to talk about my job when all I wanted was to get a policy written for myself lol.

BTW medical professionals ARE supposed to notify police if a patient expresses the intent to harm themselves or others. (EX- "I'm so burnt out from stripping and [insert other problems]...I am going to kill myself." "I hate my boyfriend and will kill him tonight.") SOOOOOOO find a psych therapist that is openminded. People in "family medicine" clinics are not used to tailoring care for sex workers.
