    Default Back injury

Hi ladies, I’ve been having numbness and tingling in my fingers and arm (right arm) spawning from my shoulder (I can feel the nerve being pinched sometimes) and it’s only gotten worse in the last 3 months, so my doctor ordered an mri and apparently I have disc space narrowing and a bulge in my cervical spine, hence the tingling/numbness feeling. I’m kind of hysterical about it because I can’t see a specialist for another month, and the pain is getting so much worse. I’ve googled about this and obviously the results freak me out. I’m really just wondering is any of you have had this happen before? I haven’t danced for almost a year so I feel I can confidently rule out the “walking around in 8inch heels for hours” but I’m just so scared and nervous I am going to be in chronic pain for the rest of my life. I know that probably no one on here is a neurosurgeon or spine specialist but any info or past expierences or any related expierences would be nice. I also have nightmares literally every single night and I’m worried maybe I do something in my sleep to cause it.

Former athleate here... When dealing with back injuries get 5 or 6 opinions. I don't want to scare you but even with surgery it still might not fix things or the surgery could make things worse.

You have to find a doctor who really cares, isn't trying to push an unnecessary surgery just to make money but also, and most importantly, knows what he/she is doing. Do your own research and look up the results and reviews of the doctor.

My friend had the exact same symptoms you had but the pain was in his leg. He had no former sport history or major injury. He went to a big facility that treats our local NFL team and received back surgery that cost over 100k but since he had insurance he still paid 3-5k out of pocket.

Well, the surgery made him worse. He walks now with a permanent limp because of the surgery. Post surgery nobody cared and they just wrote him scripts for opioids to mask the botched job they did.

My friend didn't shop around. Just took the first doctor's advice when he should have shopped around even though it's hard to do that in a medical emergency.

Do you know if there's any chance physical therapy or a chiropractor could help?

I live with chronic back and shoulder pain. I literally live in the gym, working out helps suppress the pain, albeit temporarily. I can't function if I don't work out at least 5-6 days a week. I can't travel without finding a gym everywhere I go. Yoga, stretching, swimming, sauna, everything to warm up the spine and to reduce the symptoms. Massage helps. A visit to a chiropractor might help. In my experience, all this provides just a temporary relief. But it beats doing nothing and suffering.

I've had back problems in the past, and I've found reverse sit-ups help me. I don't know if it would help with your condition, but it strengthens the muscles in the back.

    I used something like this.

    or this

I've never used this before, but I've read inversion tables can be helpful.

It's probably a good idea to check with a doctor before trying something new.

Everyone's different, but I can tell you what worked for me, hopefully will help you solve your issue. Back pain sux, I injured mine many years ago by improper lifting. (Was dropping off a transmission at a repair shop, holding it away from my body so as not to get grease on my suit.) Went to see doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors, etc.
What I must do to keep it from recurring is core strengthening and to keep spine joints loose. We tend to do abs (situps, crunches, etc.) but forget the opposite muscles, like the back exercises suggested in the post above.
Complimenting that are stretches to keep motion in all spine vertebra. If two get 'locked together' the muscles of the adjoining need to bend past their comfort zone causing pain. So for me it is 5 min of daily stretches.

That's what works for me, you'll have to figure out (hopefully) what works for you. Obviously you'll have to wait and take it slow till the pain subsides, been there, I did have to visit a chiropractor to get the joints loosened. Now if I keep it loose myself I don't need one. Hopefully you'll be able to figure out what works for you. Good luck!

Thank you guys! I appreciate all the advice! I finally got scheduled with a physical therapist but not for another week and a half. I definitely don’t ever want surgery on my back that’s why I’m so terrified especially since I am a former soccer player and I could never not be active... My doctor told me a few things I could do at the gym but she told me to really wait until I speak with a physical therapist as they will know best. My doc gave me steroids and it *seems* to be helping a little but I’m still having major numbness in my arm still. I will definitely keep this updated Incase anyone has similar issues or anything like that.

I know a couple people in addition to myself who have had amazing results with acupuncture. Many people end up avoiding surgery by going this route. Try to find someone who specializes in "Classical" Chinese medicine, not TCM. PM me with any questions... I am a surgical nurse who is back in school to learn acupuncture

One thing that could make a difference is a good mattress. If you have an old one, it would be worth spending for a good one. Also if you do a lot of sitting, having a chair with good back support could make a difference.
