    Default Hawks and little dogs

Preface: My Mom has COPD and she keeps having these episodes where she can't breathe during the night. It got bad enough where she was on a ventilator. I'd had enough, so i talked my mom into moving in with me. If this is going on she can't live alone. I moved out of my big bedroom and into my Daughter's bedroom and moved my Daughter into the little Bedroom that was once a sort of den (all the books wound up in the garage), Mom moved into the master Bedroom so she could have some space and Kaytlin (my Daughter) is only here sometimes.

So that's the current living situation. But...

Mom brought her Pomeranian with her.

There's a fucking HAWK that's been hunting the neighborhood for weeks. This dog is a bit too big to be bird food, but if this Hawk gets desperate it could try for this little dog even if it's slightly too big to fly away with.

I was out smoking (My mom has COPD, not one cigarette gets smoked around her i don't care how cold it is) with the dog and that Hawk swooped in , obviously eyeing my mom's dog. It made for that dog. It turned at the last second, possibly because i went running at it, but i saw it, it was after Jax. I booted Jax inside and the Hawk flew off. But i've seen that Hawk before. That Hawk nests somewhere around here.

It's a Pomeranian mix, that Hawk can't carry it off but if it gets desperate enough those Talons can do some damage even if it can't carry the yapping dog away.

    Anyone have any ideas?

You need to be careful for sure with small dogs ( mine is 8 pounds ) and larger birds of prey. They will swoop and can injure the dog.

The best protection is to keep the dog on a short leash ( since you are much larger , the bird isn't going to risk trying with you are very close ).

Don't underestimate that hawk. Just puncturing the dog can kill it instantly and fly off. Like Carnen says, short leash or you can the dog potty indoors to be safe.

    I hate hawks.

This is why you should keep small pets inside.

    Yes.

A couple years ago, on tv, I saw a news item about an OWL..yes an owl.

A man was walking his small dog (don't remember the breed) & an owl swooped down, the things that saved the dog was the owl skidded on the ice, also the dog was wearing a sweater, & the claws couldn't grip.

    It's against the law.
    From:
    http://icwdm.org/handbook/birds/HawksOwls.asp

All hawks and owls are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (16 USC, 703-711). These laws strictly prohibit the capture, killing, or possession of hawks or owls without special permit. No permits are required to scare depredating migratory birds except for endangered or threatened species (see Table 1), including bald and golden eagles.

I recently got a Beagle puppy. If it comes down to a choice between my dog and some fucking bird, I can already tell you that you can cite law after law, and I'm still going to protect my dog.

On a somewhat more amusing note, this reminds me of a joke I'd heard.

A hunter was walking through the woods, when he spotted a Bald Eagle. So he shot and killed it, took it home, prepped it, and cooked it. While he was eating it, the police rushed in and carried him away in handcuffs.
So he went to trial, he was sentenced, but at the end of it, the judge stopped him and said to him, "You know, I don't condone what you did at all, but curiosity is killing me, so I have to ask.. how did it taste?"
The hunter thinks about it for a second, then says to the judge "Well, kind of like a cross between a California Condor and a Spotted Owl".

Oh geez..hawks. I agree with the others on the short leash idea and staying by the dog. Hawks are scared of humans and won't bother if you're around. You don't happen to have a birdfeeder outside do you? If so get rid of it. Those can attract hawks, not that a hawk eats bird seed but hawks like to hang around birdfeeders to snatch up smaller birds and squirrels to eat. I had an outdoor birdfeeder and have witnessed incidents of hawks swooping down for small birds and one even took off with a rather large bluejay. I had a semi-tame squirrel who used to come to my home to be handfed and he met his demise due to a hawk. He was a chubby squirrel. Hawk didn't take off with him but the puncture wounds from his sharp claws digging in in an attempt to get him was enough to kill him. Stay by the dog at all times when he's outside because although hawk might not be able to pick him up, he might still try and end up killing him with his claws in the process.

It's understandable if it's trying to kill your pet.

Are there many birds of prey in your area?

I think we have some, but I've never been aware of any particular abundance of them. I know for sure we have owls. Before I moved into the city, the animals I worried about were land-based. There were foxes, coyotes, and a neighbor's trail cam captured what looked like a wolf, and there was a specific breed which had been reintroduced into the state.

I would never advocate violating a law, or using the 3S remedy. Be aware the government has a form for everything.

There is also the ever popular hawk proof Vest:

Why can’t they just be like the tiny chicken hawk that kept picking fights with Foghorn Leghorn?

I think the hawk-proof vest Slowpoke linked to is a good idea. I was going to suggest some type of protection, but I didn't know anyone made anything like that.

An Eagle could probably carry that cat off! Including my mom's Dog! An Eagle is a BIG bird!

I dunno man, but I'd pay good money to watch a few hawks lift my 105 pound obese dog. Joking aside, I have heard stories of coyotes getting small sized pooches, someones tiny puppy didn't make it (guess coyotes are an issue in a part of LA??) and I think people need to be super careful of the tiny breeds. I saw 3 running together in the early morning while walking my large dogs. Not worth keeping your pets alone without supervision.
