    Default Adult Entertainer Write Offs

    Hi everyone!
i typically just use turbo tax to do my taxes. However, I am concerned about some write offs. I got 1600 cc breast implants for work purposes. I’m not quite sure if I can write it off. I suppose technically I can because I have seen it done before but the case goes all the way back to 1994. I don’t know if that rule still applies in today’s standards. Also since I am an adult entertainer can my make up, hair extensions, etc be considered write offs? It seems like it’s kind of a grey area for entertainers with cosmetic related goods.
    Thank Yoi

I believe if they're over a certain amount of cc's (it might be 1000 but I honestly don't know so don't take my word for it), you can write it off. I assume you're referring to the Chesty Love case. Hers were so big they were considered "stage props" and she argued that while they enhanced her business, they were a detriment to her personal life. You could try it, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the IRS wanted to investigate further. Makeup, hair extensions, gym memberships, beauty treatments, etc., are not considered write offs because they're also used in your personal life and not strictly considered a business expense. I don't know what part of the industry you're in but stripper clothes/lingerie, stripper shoes, webcams, studio lighting, toys, etc., are all the types of things you can write off.

I'd say if your hair extensions are removable and you only wear them for work, then yes, they are deductible, as would be a wig.

I do deduct my hair and nails because that is a part of my look for adult entertainment. With the hair being done a certain way, I need to ensure I look like my my stage name. I label it under costume. I know this is most likely not acceptable per IRS guidelines. However, I have NEVER wasted my money on hair and nails for personal reasons, prior to entering this stupid industry and extending it to the more mainstream. Now, it's kind of a requirement to make money bc it is my signature look and I can't get the color out of a box, so need to go to a salon.

As far as make-up, definitely not, even though I don't wear make-up outside of this job. No, to gym memberships. Botox, plastic surgery, skin care-I'm not so sure. Botox and skin care is potentially a possible deduction if you get it from a dermatologist, under medical care, but I've heard of a lot of accountants allowing it as a general expense for adult entertainers, as some do with plastic surgery but I don't think that's really kosher. I've had interviews with cpas who say all stuff related to your looks is deductible, so you could make that argument but if you're audited, it would be at the discretion of the auditor to allow the deductions or not. I think that you can most certainly deduct make-up if you get it from a theater store with specialty, stage make-up.

I deduct stripper-wear bought from a stripper store, some Victoria Secret (I only wear it for personal use after it's been too worn-out to be used for work), stripper heels, a bunch of travel expenses used for my work, any and all marketing including stage fees, business licenses and background checks if applicable, llc formation if applicable, legal fees (if it pertains to your independent contract job/labor rights disputes), a justanswer membership to ask tax and legal questions pertaining to my job much cheaper than via a lawyer, mileage (as a self-employed independent contractor), hair/nails (under "costume"), accident insurance, travel insurance (if you travel out-of-state for work a lot, this will be what will pay your health care costs if needs be), health insurance, self-employed retirement plan contributions (this can reduce your taxable bracket by a huge amount), health care expenses used out of HSA, tax prep software (after Trump Tax reform, this may no longer be deductible unless you are an llc), an extra phone for customers, 50% off internet. If you use your computer and any computer equipment to webcam, or make/edit videos for sale in addition to stripping or even to talk on this forum to self-educate yourself about the current trends in your business, I'd guess it may qualify a portion of your internet and computer as a deduction, so I'd take it. That's what I do, but I realize some of the deductions are definitely disputable, even if plenty of cpas would take them on your behalf.

Personally I don't write anything off except shoes and my dancer licenses. More write-offs = more red flags for audits... Even though the audit may just result in disallowing those deductions & an extra $100 in taxes, that's not stress I want, ya know?

If you wanted to push it, I would MAYBE do the hair extensions if they're removable and the implants. 1600cc sounds like they put you at a really large cup size, so you might have success in arguing that going that large is only for adult entertainer purposes.
I wouldn't try makeup or nails though, 90% of women wear makeup and/or have their nails done so you'd have a hell of a time arguing it was only for work purposes.

I second what Selina said ^^ Also, as a dancer, you can write off your DJ and house fees if applicable, as well as any travel or lodging expenses if you travel for work (gas, tolls, hotel, etc).

There are plenty of threads on writing off boob jobs. I would refer you to Hess v. CIR, 1994 U.S. Tax Ct. LEXIS 88; T.C. Summary Opinion 1994-79 (U.S. Tax Court 1994). For reference, the enhancements in question got the taxpayer up to a 56N bra size.

Also, you do not write of house fees and DJ tip outs, you just never count those dollars as income in the first place. Much easier accounting. Again, lots of threads on that issue.

Really? Wouldn't it depend on how much stage fee paid annually?

//I have no problem excluding the club from my considerations for tax liability, it's not like they go out of the way for me at all lol....

Nope. You count what you take out of the club at the end of the shift. That is what the Service means when they say you have "complete dominion over the accession to wealth." It has nothing to do with how much or little your tip out is over the course of a year.

I do what Zofia said because it's easier and because if you start bringing tipouts into it, you're technically supposed to have issued 1099s to all *those* people...
