Tired URGENT, PLEASE HELP! Very confused about taxes! unique situation

Hi! I'm 20, and I've never done my own taxes before.

My uncle used to do my taxes but has considered me subhuman since I danced, and since he's all high and mighty, he says since he doesn't have any stripper clients that he shouldn't do mine and that I should find another way. The fact that he is just an awful person and that he is a partner at a big accounting firm and absolutely knows how to do taxes for an independent contractor, aside.... I need some help and advice!

I was a stripper in 2018 from January until August and I didn't know until too late that I was supposed to be saving my receipts, and those that I did save were lost in a lot of moving and unstable situations. I wrote down everything I earned and came up under 10k, and I've heard the rumor that I don't need to claim if it was under 10k, so if someone could confirm or deny that from inside our space, i'd be grateful. I'm currently living with an older relative and I have no income as I'm unemployed. We have NO room for any more expenses that could come from having to pay the IRS and we're struggling from week to week. My relative is almost 80 and still working 7 days a week and I've been looking for a "normal" job for 4 months now.

Bottom line: It's April 2nd and I need to figure out what I need to claim from dancing or if I even do. Please help a baby sex worker out here! Much Love.

Calm down. You can send in a document stating you only made under $10K & that's good enough.

Sounds like you need to file quarterly.

BTW TurboTax and HR Block offer online tax programs that deduct their fees from your returned money so you don't need a tax preparer.

Bad news: You still owe self-employment taxes on the income. It's about 15%, so around $1500.

Good news: You won't owe income tax once you do all the deductions and exemptions.
Good news: It's pretty easy to do your own taxes, it's just a little tedious with the extra forms.
Good news: The IRS is actually pretty reasonable to work with. You can set a payment plan up very easily online. They'll let you go up to 6 years IIRC, which would be a $20-$30 payment on that amount.

If things are absolutely that tight, you can file an extension until October. You incur failure-to-pay fees but they will be miniscule on that amount.

I would definitely recommend H&R over TurboTax! I don't think TurboTax is necessarily a bad programme; but their e-filing can get a little tricky and every time I e-filed with them I had problems. With H&R, the times I have used them, I had my taxes done in person rather than online and they were completely polite and professional even knowing I was a dancer.

Since it's your first time doing your own taxes, regardless of which company you choose, I would recommend getting them done in person so the CPA can walk you through everything.

Also, F your sanctimonious uncle, OP. Sorry he was such a dick to you.

    Relax, it will be fine

Personally, I would rather rack up credit cards than get involved with the IRS, that is just me. When you do that you are on their radar and are somewhat forced to play it straight in the future

Did you have other W2 income last year? If you paid some taxes this way it will help since you paid taxes, you are not 'in trouble'

Did you pay for any business expenses with credit cards? clothes shoes etc? Buy online? email order confirmations?

As a sole proprietor you can file a schedule c

    https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...xC7k7wK5VAZLQY

Not so daunting as it looks

Part I will be your cash income, you will probably have no other entries
    PartII
    line 8 did you advertise?
line 9 mileage is 58 cents a mile, you can write off some of your mileage here
line10 probably stage fees would go here
    line 17 tax preparer fees

    probably nothing else there

    part III nothing
part IV car info if you are claiming any mileage
partV other would include clothes, part of your cell bill, any other directly work related expenses

I am just trying to show you that even thought the form looks complex, your work is not that complex[tax wise] and you can do it yourself if you wish

the rest of your actually 1040 is simple, you will take a standard deduction

Even if you to not do taxes yourself, having an understanding of the forms and what the gov't is looking for will help you run your business better

you are in business after all!

I agree with others who suggested finding a local H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt. They will be able to help sort out all of this fairly easily. Just bring everything you have in the form of records, including deposits and expenses for your dancing income.

Don't worry about receipts if you don't have them. Just write down everything you can remember re: expenses, which honestly shouldn't be all that much anyway. The only time that receipts are really important is if you are audited, which frankly is unlikely on most tax returns under $100k.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

The first and LAST time I went to H & R block I ended up owing a lot of money back. For that reason I’ll never use them again because their people seem inexperienced and lazy. You’re better off at Jackson Hewitt if you want to go to a chain tax prep.

But get recommendations from friends / family on tax preparers who are experienced and can really help you

    Exactly!^

I know my insurance guy, (he also does taxes) said they're bad, he applied to work w/them & was hired, but turned down that job.
Back at a previous job, a coworker said his friend got very messed up w/them.

I'd agree, Jackson Hewitt is a decent place to have taxes done.

The issue with all the franchises is you never know the background of the preparer. They could be a future CPA, a busisness professional or someone that was flipping burgers last week... So someone might have a great experience w H&R Block one day, the next day someone gets a newbie...

Are you friends with any of the other strippers where you worked? If you are, ask them how they get their taxes done. Maybe they know a tax professional who can help.

LOL @ calf looking at a new gate

FWIW a lot of Independent CPAs are very busy in the months leading up to April and don't often want to take on new clients. A "big box" service like JH is usually the faster/easier thing to do with someone who has anxiety about their taxes.

Not dancing anymore its jsut webcam and affiliate marketing but lately I've been using zipbooks.com to track my income and expenses.

https://waveapps.com I've also found a free accounting software with Waveapps over using it the last few hours . it's actually a lot better than Zipbooks.

    http://zipbooks.com

I just manually enter in my numbers then download it or copy paste the screen into spreadsheet and print it off.

sorry this is coming too late but you could have actually gotten a decent return. when you make that little, even self employed as a dancer you get a return.

Use IRS efile. It's free. It's online. https://www.irs.gov/filing/e-file-options . The questions are exactly the same as what H&R Block, Jackson Hewett, or Turbo Tax will ask. And the returns are done in an instant. Honestly, Block and Jackson in person are sketchy at best. Block online is OK, but it's the same as Turbo Tax and not really as good as the IRS own free site.
