    Default Food Splurge

Sometimes it feels good to splurge and treat oneself. The other day standing rib roasts went on a very rare sale at my local supermarket, which only happens around Easter and Christmas. We already had plans for an Easter ham, but I couldn't resist the opportunity.

We cooked it the day before Easter and it came out perfectly. We seared it in our biggest cast iron pan before roasting it, which browned the outside and made it crunchy when roasted. Then we seasoned the heck out of it and roasted it until it was 135 degrees on the meat thermometer. We also made a wonderful gravy using drippings from both the searing and roasting pans (de-glazing both). Man it was a real treat to eat that, with rich beef gravy smothered over the meat and the potatoes.

Now I still paid $40 for it to feed a family of 5 (with leftovers), but normally that piece of meat would cost double that. If we had ordered that meal in a restaurant, I'm sure we would have paid triple what we did by cooking it at home and probably would have received controlled portions instead of pigging out on second helpings.

Anyone else have a food splurge story? Maybe something you know is a budget splurge, but you treat yourself to anyway every once in a while?

Mine is "the importance of where":
So there is a Nobu in London in Mayfair. One man. £1900. And only £300 or so of it was saké. A5 Wagyu. Otoro. Stupid but it was good.
Caviar Russe on Madison in Manhattan. One man. $2000. And only $200 was champagne. Malossol "Royal" Osyetra.
Petrossian boutique in Bellagio in Las Vegas. One man. $2700. And only $300 was alcohol. Osyetra, Tuna, Foie gras. Afterwards I tried to get the guy who does Dr. Evil under a stair bridge to do an impromptu comedy movie. He wanted $100 which I declined though which upon sober reflection was reasonable. Where the hell are my priorities.
This only happens when I finish a long project in a place where you can't get any of this stuff. Thank stars the staff know me.

That's quite a splurge Bahuba. I was trying to keep it simple - I doubt anyone is going to want to follow that.

I consider ordering food in general my splurge because that tip and delivery fee gets expensive lol. And now I'm craving roast and potatoes.

All good Bahuba. I just wasn't expecting such an exorbitant "splurge" story.

It's funny, when I was single I was more inclined to have a sumptuous splurge night out. Nothing close to your level for sure, but I had no qualms about dropping a couple hundred at a Capital Grille for a nice meal out during a travel job. I figured I deserved it if I had to be on the road anyway.

But now that I have a family, it seems profligate to spend that kind of money solely on myself for a meal out. Part of it is that we just have so many more expenses - I already spend a fortune on various kids' pursuits and college costs are looming. So now something as simple as making a $40 standing rib roast, or having a meal out in a steakhouse with the family, feels like a real splurge.

Capital Grille is great which one? Yeah that makes sense. The truth is, IMHO kids seem to hate that kind of food anyway. My friends' kids want mac and cheese, chicken tenders, fries.

I've eaten in several CGs - Philly, Dallas, Stamford (CT) and Jacksonville (FL) that I can recall. In many cities it is the nicest steakhouse they have. Never in NYC though as there are just too many other high-end steakhouse options to explore - I've eaten in several but there are still many that I haven't had the chance to try yet. No wagyu beef though as I'm a simple man who enjoys likes his all American grain/corn fed prime beef.

The last time I spent a decent amount of money (by my standards, perhaps not yours lol) was at a Brazilian steakhouse during lunch time. After tip, it costed $106. I got it for myself and the boyfriend-at-the-time, since I hadn’t bought him a Christmas gift. I’m not much one for enjoying the gift-giving process, so I was glad he was happy with it.

Otherwise, my favorite way to splurge is at some sort of food tasting event.

One kind is where you pay a flat price for an admission ticket and get a sit down prix fixe food and alcohol meal. I went to one that involved a five course meal dedicated to eating insects, with generous amounts of a local brand of beer being paired with the dishes. (I got very tipsy and somebody else had to drive my car.)

Another kind is an outdoor event and you walk around to a bunch of booths representing a local area restaurant, that will give you a food sample.

I like the one in DC best (or NVA, I guess it is called) - no knock against American beef although Argentinian is IMHO better.

Yes, Argentina has huge grasslands and the beef is grassfed and free range. Very tender, flavorful and great value. If you are in Buenos Aires try it and thank me later :-)

I hear ya' Bahuba, but personally I find grass fed beef to be too lean and gamey. Truth be told, almost all beef starts out grass fed, but here in los Estados Unidos they finish it off with corn, grain or both to fatten it up and to add to the meat flavor.

I really did not know that - I assumed they were fed a diet of corn. I clearly have to visit a cattle ranch.

    I'll believe you.

Yeah the whole grass fed versus grain fed argument is something that fitness types and culinary types will probably never agree on.

Side note, I'll be adding some rabbit to the shopping list since I got into an argument with my boyfriend about how edible game rabbit is here. His first wife apparently raised rabbits for them to eat but he never talks up her cooking skills, probably out of spite lol
