Default Working sober for the first time

I just got done taking a long break from dancing, about 3 months. I'm an alcoholic and wasn't able to work the job sober. My last night was so bad - I got blackout drunk at work and apparently just left. My money had taken a major downward turn from my drinking and it was just a shit show. I was averaging about $300-500 a night (that may not sound awful but shifts are like 7 hours) and a few years ago before the drinking got out of control I was a top earner regularly leaving with $700-$1000. I haven't had a night like that in so long now, break aside.

Anyways I've been sober since leaving, did the AA thing and all that but the regular job I've been working isn't cutting it and I'm thinking of going back in to work tonight. There's an upcoming event I'm dying to go to but it costs a lot of money and I think it would be worth going in once or twice to secure my spot. I'm confident I can do it without drinking - but I don't really know how I guess? I feel like aside from the shit show nights where I got way too drunk, drinking did help me relax and the hustle came to me more easily. I have anxiety in social situations so I'm not sure how this will play out. Fortunately we have a system at this club where we can pretend the bartender is giving us alcohol but it's just juice and then we charge the customer for a full priced drink and split the difference. I"ll be relying on that tonight for sure lol.

I think I remember another user posting something about quitting drinking at work and her money skyrocketed so maybe it will actually be an improvement for the job. I'm just wondering if anyone else has done this and if they have any tips or words of encouragement. Maybe I'll like work more without the alcohol aspect, who knows. Thanks

Maybe do some other things to relax

Like put some headphones in a play relaxing music
    Try hypnosis
    Preshift massage
    Drink warm tea

Also be careful getting too relaxed cause people sense opportunity for taking advantage of others

Brush up on your sales skills

Mainly uust take it one day at a time. Reward yourself. If you can do it sober 21 days it becomes a habit.

If you find you have difficulties going without liquor at the clubs then it’s possible that it’s just not the right environment for you at this moment

I think working at a juice bar helps. I went to work at a club with bottle sales-nut for me!!! I don’t need peer pressure. I also felt the only way to make money was to drink...dangerous for my soberity. I’m also a big fan of AA. Lots of unhealthy groups, but if you find a healthy women’s group it’s great. Just don’t tell them you are a dancer if you go unless you find a really progressive group. Quitting drinking was the best decision I ever made! You got this! Take care. I think the biggest thing is always having a fake drink. Look like you’re having fun. “I don’t have to be drunk to have fun with you.” Empty a beer bottle out and put water in it if you want. I never went to AA to quit drinking because I was able to quit by myself, but I’m forever grateful for the 12 step family for their love and acceptance during difficult times in my life. Although it’s not for everyone.

OP, your post is a little concerning because it sounds like you're already justifying drinking at work (the mentality of, as long as i don't drink too much, alcohol can actually relax me and help me hustle better...) Just hoping that that's a misread on my part.

Wishing you all the best in your recovery.

Oh no, I don't at all think I can still drink at work, or anywhere else. When I first started dancing it didn't screw things up for me the way it does today. I know that alcoholism gets progressively worse. And thank you!

Anyways, I worked sober tonight for the first time ever and it was a much better shift than I expected. I wasn't easily triggered emotionally by worry, annoyance, being offended by rude remarks etc the way I usually would be. I had a detached and patient attitude about making money (while also not letting anyone waste my time) and made over $700 in the four hours I was there - a lot better than how most of my shifts were going before. I should have started working sober ages ago!

Oh, and on top of that, the $$ I made from having customers buy me fake alcoholic drinks covered my tipout.

Thank you so much posting this. It's something I've been struggling with for years while dancing. I've steadily improved but still have a ways to go. Just like you, and many dancers I'm sure, I suffer from social anxiety. It is so encouraging to hear that you managed to have a great shift while sober.
